Chapter 2 â The Flash Drive

Chapter 2 â The Flash Drive
The hallway fell into complete silence.
Richard Cole stood with his back against the open elevator shaft, the encrypted flash drive held tightly between his fingers.
Four armed security guards surrounded him.
Adrian Sinclair took one cautious step forward.
"Give me the drive."
Richard smiled.
"You've spent your entire life believing you owned an empire."
His eyes gleamed with amusement.
"But you've never even owned your own story."
Before Adrian could react, Richard suddenly tossed the flash drive into the air.
Every guard instinctively looked up.
The tiny device spun through the air.
A security officer lunged forward and caught it just before it disappeared into the elevator shaft.
Richard laughed.
"Good."
"I wanted you to have it."
The guards tackled him to the floor.
Steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
For the first time all night...
The mastermind looked completely relaxed.
The Arrest
Police officers stormed into the west wing moments later.
Detective Daniel Mercer, head of the Major Crimes Division, immediately took control.
Richard was pulled to his feet.
"You have the right to remain silent."
Richard interrupted him with a grin.
"I know my rights."
"You'll need them more than I will."
Mercer ignored the comment.
He nodded toward Vanessa Harrington and Sophia Reynolds.
"Take them too."
Vanessa struggled violently.
"You can't arrest me!"
"My father knows the mayor!"
"My lawyers will destroy every one of you!"
No one answered.
Sophia surrendered without resistance.
She simply whispered,
"I'm sorry."
As officers escorted the three suspects away, hundreds of stunned guests silently watched.
Only hours earlier...
They had been celebrating a fairy-tale wedding.
Now...
It had become the biggest criminal investigation the city had seen in years.
Lily
At the edge of the ballroom, Lily still stood trembling.
She hadn't moved since the accusations.
Margaret gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
"It's over."
Lily slowly shook her head.
"No."
"It isn't."
"They'll always remember me as the waitress who poisoned the champagne."
Margaret smiled sadly.
"No."
"They'll remember the waitress who survived a trap."
Adrian approached them.
For a moment, he couldn't find the right words.
Finally, he said,
"I'm sorry."
Lily looked surprised.
"You don't owe me an apology."
"I stood there while everyone accused you."
"I should have stopped it sooner."
Lily lowered her eyes.
"You asked for evidence."
"That was enough."
Adrian extended his hand.
"My company failed to protect you tonight."
"I intend to make that right."
She hesitated...
Then shook his hand.
Neither of them noticed Margaret quietly watching.
A faint smile crossed the older woman's face.
The Impossible Encryption
Two hours later...
Inside Sinclair Global's cybersecurity laboratory...
The flash drive sat inside a secure evidence box.
Adrian.
Detective Mercer.
The company's Chief Technology Officer.
And two federal cybercrime specialists stared at the monitor.
The drive had finally been connected.
Nothing happened.
The screen displayed only a single message.
ENCRYPTED
Below it...
A countdown.
Three password attempts remaining.
The CTO frowned.
"This isn't ordinary encryption."
"It was custom-built."
Mercer folded his arms.
"Can you crack it?"
The expert slowly shook his head.
"Not without risking permanent deletion."
Adrian looked at the screen.
"Who created it?"
The technician zoomed in on the encryption signature.
His expression changed instantly.
"This..."
"...doesn't make sense."
"What?"
"This security architecture belongs to Sinclair Global."
Adrian frowned.
"We never made anything like this."
The technician looked at him.
"According to the metadata..."
"It was designed by someone using your executive credentials."
A Name From the Past
Mercer immediately ordered an audit of the company's archives.
An hour later...
A young analyst rushed into the room carrying an old personnel file.
"You need to see this."
She placed the folder on the table.
The employee's name read:
Samuel Graves
Chief Cybersecurity Engineer.
Employment ended...
Twenty-five years earlier.
Reason:
Deceased.
The analyst continued,
"He's the only engineer who ever built encryption matching this system."
Mercer frowned.
"When did he die?"
"Officially?"
"A laboratory explosion."
Adrian's expression darkened.
"I remember my father mentioning him."
"He said it was a tragic accident."
The analyst quietly added,
"There's one more thing."
She slid an old photograph across the table.
Standing beside Samuel Graves...
Was Adrian's late father.
Edward Sinclair.
And...
Richard Cole's father.
The room became silent.
Richard Speaks
Inside the detention center...
Richard sat calmly inside the interrogation room.
Detective Mercer entered carrying the photograph.
He placed it on the table.
"You knew."
Richard glanced down.
"I know many things."
"Tell me about Samuel Graves."
Richard smiled.
"You'll never find him."
"He's dead."
"So they say."
Richard leaned forward.
"Tell Adrian..."
"...that dead men are very useful."
Mercer narrowed his eyes.
"What does that mean?"
Richard ignored the question.
Instead, he looked directly into the interrogation camera.
"I hope you're watching."
The First Password
Back at Sinclair Global...
The cybersecurity team continued examining the flash drive.
A young programmer suddenly froze.
"Wait."
She enlarged the drive's serial number.
Then compared it with old company records.
Her breathing quickened.
"This serial number..."
"...was assigned to Project Genesis."
Adrian frowned.
"I've never heard of it."
The CTO looked pale.
"Neither have I."
The programmer opened a classified archive.
Access denied.
She tried again using Adrian's CEO credentials.
This time...
The archive opened.
Only one file existed.
GENESIS
Inside...
A single sentence.
The first password is the child's true birthday.
Everyone exchanged confused looks.
"What child?"
No one knew.
A Visitor at Midnight
Near midnight...
Adrian returned to his penthouse overlooking the city.
He was exhausted.
The wedding.
The poison.
The arrests.
The flash drive.
Nothing made sense anymore.
As he unlocked the front door...
He noticed something unusual.
The lights were already on.
He reached for the alarm panel.
Disabled.
Someone was inside.
Adrian quietly stepped into the living room.
An elderly man sat peacefully beside the fireplace.
Gray beard.
Simple clothes.
A wooden cane resting across his knees.
The stranger looked up and smiled.
"I've been waiting a long time."
Adrian remained perfectly still.
"Who are you?"
The old man answered softly.
"My name..."
"...is Samuel Graves."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
"That's impossible."
"They said you died twenty-five years ago."
Samuel chuckled.
"They lied."
Adrian's heart pounded.
"Were you the one who created the flash drive?"
Samuel nodded.
"I created far more than that."
He slowly stood.
"Richard was only protecting it."
"Protecting what?"
Samuel looked directly into Adrian's eyes.
"The truth."
"What truth?"
The old man's smile disappeared.
"The truth that Edward Sinclair..."
He paused.
"...was never your father."
The room fell silent.
Adrian couldn't breathe.
Samuel took one step closer.
May you like
"And that's only the beginning."
