Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1
The Brooch Beneath the Chandelier
The first thing Evelyn Hart noticed after the gala ended was the silence.
Not the peaceful kind.
The uncomfortable kind.
The kind that remained after people witnessed something they would later pretend they never saw.
Three hours earlier, the Solstice Charity Gala had been the most beautiful room in Chicago.
Crystal chandeliers.
White roses imported from France.
A string quartet playing softly beneath golden lights.
Every powerful family in the city had been there.
Politicians.
Business owners.
Celebrities.
People who donated millions and smiled for cameras.
People who knew how to look innocent.
Then Marcus Vane grabbed Evelyn Hart’s arm.
And everything changed.
Now, sitting in the emergency room, Evelyn watched the video spreading across social media.
Nineteen seconds.
That was all people saw.
Nineteen seconds was enough to destroy someone’s reputation.
The video showed:
A billionaire.
A crying child.
A woman with a badge.
An arrest.
Nobody saw the beginning.
Nobody saw Marcus find Sophie injured.
Nobody saw the broken velvet case.
Nobody saw the fear in Marcus’s eyes.
People preferred simple stories.
Heroes.
Villains.
Victims.
Monsters.
The truth was always more complicated.
"Evelyn?"
She looked up.
Sophie was watching her.
The little girl sat beneath a hospital blanket, her white dress replaced with blue pajamas.
Three small medical strips covered the cut above her eyebrow.
She looked tiny.
Too tiny for the world she had been forced into.
"What?"
Sophie pointed at Evelyn’s phone.
"Are they saying bad things about you?"
Evelyn locked the screen.
"No."
Sophie tilted her head.
"You always lie when the answer is yes."
Despite everything, Evelyn almost smiled.
Almost.
"You should sleep."
"You should too."
"I’m older."
"That means you need more sleep."
Evelyn looked at her.
"Who taught you that?"
"My mom."
The answer hurt.
It always did.
Clara Hart.
Her sister.
Sophie’s mother.
The woman who disappeared three years ago.
Everyone said Clara was gone.
Some said she ran away.
Some said she died.
Some said she abandoned her daughter.
Evelyn never believed any of them.
Because Clara would never leave Sophie.
Never.
Her phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
Evelyn answered immediately.
"Agent Hart."
Silence.
Then a man’s voice.
"Remove the brooch from evidence."
Evelyn stood.
"Who is this?"
"Someone who knows what happened tonight."
Her expression hardened.
"Where did you get my number?"
"You’re asking the wrong question."
The voice became quieter.
"The right question is..."
"Why did Marcus Vane want that brooch found?"
The call ended.
Evelyn stared at the phone.
Behind her, Sophie whispered:
"Who was that?"
Evelyn did not answer.
Because she had just realized something.
Marcus Vane had not been trying to accuse Sophie.
He had been trying to find something.
Something hidden.
Something worth destroying a reputation over.
At 4:30 a.m., Evelyn returned to the gala location.
The hotel lobby was empty.
The marble floor had been cleaned.
The flowers had been replaced.
The evidence of the scandal was gone.
Almost.
A security officer approached.
"Ms. Hart?"
"Where is the brooch?"
The officer hesitated.
"Evidence storage."
"Show me."
The man looked uncomfortable.
"There's a problem."
Evelyn stopped.
"What problem?"
"The evidence bag is empty."
Her heart sank.
"What?"
"The brooch is gone."
And that was the moment Evelyn understood.
The gala had never been about a stolen jewel.
It had been about a secret.
A secret someone was willing to hurt a child to protect.
Then her phone received a message.
One picture.
A woman.
A woman Evelyn knew better than anyone.
Clara Hart.
Alive.
Standing beside Marcus Vane.
Holding Sophie as a baby.
Under the picture were six words:
May you like
You protected the wrong person.
