Chapter 8

The Prisoner in the Mansion

The first rule Evelyn Hart learned as an investigator was simple:

Never let panic make decisions for you.

Panic made people reckless.

It made them run toward danger without understanding the situation.

It made them believe action was always better than patience.

But that rule became almost impossible to follow when the person in danger was Sophie.

Evelyn watched the video again.

Five times.

Ten times.

More than she wanted to admit.

Sophie sitting in the back seat of a black vehicle.

Her face calm.

Her hands folded neatly.

No tears.

No screaming.

That was what frightened Evelyn the most.

Sophie was not acting like a kidnapped child.

She was acting like someone who understood exactly what was happening.

The video ended with Clara's voice.

"Hello, Evelyn."

Three words.

Three words that destroyed every assumption Evelyn had built.

Clara was alive.

Clara had Sophie.

Clara had allowed this to happen.

Or worse...

Clara had planned it.

Marcus stood beside her, watching the screen.

His face was unreadable.

But Evelyn noticed his hands.

They were shaking.

"She contacted you."

Marcus said.

It was not a question.

Evelyn nodded.

"She has Sophie."

Marcus closed his eyes.

For a moment, Evelyn saw something she had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing power.

Fear of losing his daughter again.

"Where?"

he asked.

"I don't know."

"Then find out."

The command was sharp.

Evelyn turned.

"Do you think I don't want to?"

Marcus looked at her.

"I know you do."

A pause.

"That's why I'm asking."

Daniel entered the room.

"I traced the video."

Everyone turned.

"And?"

"The signal bounced through multiple servers."

"Can you find the location?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Not directly."

Evelyn frowned.

"Then what did you find?"

He placed his laptop on the table.

"The background."

The video paused.

Behind Sophie was a window.

A curtain.

An old wooden frame.

Daniel zoomed in.

"I enhanced the image."

The picture became clearer.

A landscape outside.

Trees.

A stone wall.

A tower in the distance.

Evelyn stared.

She knew that place.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

"You recognize it?"

She nodded slowly.

"Blackwood Manor."

The name carried history.

An abandoned estate owned by the Hart family.

A place Evelyn had not visited since childhood.

A place everyone believed had been sold decades ago.

"Impossible."

Daniel said.

"That property doesn't exist anymore."

Evelyn looked at him.

"That's what the records say."

And Evelyn had learned something important.

Records could lie.

Two hours later, they arrived at Blackwood Manor.

The estate stood at the edge of a forest.

Hidden.

Forgotten.

Exactly the kind of place someone would choose if they wanted the world to forget them.

The mansion was enormous.

But abandoned.

The windows were dark.

The stone walls were covered in vines.

No lights.

No movement.

Marcus looked at the building.

"Clara stayed here?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Before she disappeared."

"You knew?"

"I knew my family had this place."

"But?"

"But my father removed it from every record."

They approached the front door.

It was unlocked.

That was worse.

People who wanted privacy locked doors.

People who wanted someone to enter left them open.

Inside, the mansion was not abandoned.

It was maintained.

Fresh flowers.

Clean floors.

Food in the kitchen.

Someone lived here.

Someone had been living here for years.

"Sophie."

Marcus whispered.

A small voice answered.

"Dad?"

Everyone froze.

The voice came from upstairs.

Marcus moved instantly.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

"Wait."

He looked at her.

"We don't know what's waiting."

For once...

Marcus listened.

They moved upstairs slowly.

At the end of the hallway was a locked door.

Behind it:

Sophie.

"Evelyn?"

The voice was clear.

Alive.

Evelyn almost collapsed with relief.

"Stay back."

She examined the lock.

Simple.

Not designed to keep someone out.

Designed to keep someone in.

Marcus noticed.

"She's a prisoner."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

She looked at the door.

"Not exactly."

The door opened from inside.

Everyone stepped back.

And there she was.

Sophie.

Safe.

Unharmed.

Holding a book.

Marcus rushed forward.

"Sophie."

The girl looked up.

For a second, she looked like she wanted to run to him.

Then she stopped.

"Are you angry?"

Marcus froze.

"Why would I be angry?"

"Because I came here."

Evelyn looked confused.

"What?"

Sophie lowered her eyes.

"I knew where Mom was."

Silence.

"Sophie."

Evelyn knelt.

"Tell me everything."

The girl looked between them.

"Mom said someone was going to take me."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Then why did you come here?"

Sophie held up the book.

"Because Mom said I had to bring this."

The book was old.

Leather cover.

No title.

Marcus looked at it.

"What is that?"

Sophie answered quietly:

"The truth."

Inside the book were pages of notes.

Names.

Dates.

Transactions.

Everything Victor Vane had hidden.

Evelyn flipped through quickly.

Her expression changed.

"This is impossible."

Marcus looked.

"What?"

"The names."

He read the pages.

His face became pale.

Because the book contained the names of people connected to Victor's empire.

Judges.

Politicians.

Executives.

Investigators.

People who were still powerful.

"The fortune."

Marcus whispered.

Evelyn looked at him.

"What?"

"This is what Victor was protecting."

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"This is bigger."

Sophie spoke.

"Mom said Grandpa hid everything because he knew someone would try to take it."

Evelyn looked at her.

"Your grandfather?"

The girl nodded.

"Victor."

A chill went through the room.

Victor Vane had been dead for years.

Yet his secrets were still controlling everyone.

Then a sound came from downstairs.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Someone was inside the mansion.

Marcus moved in front of Sophie.

Evelyn reached for her weapon.

The footsteps became louder.

Then a voice echoed through the hallway.

"Put the gun away, Evelyn."

She froze.

Because she knew the voice.

Again.

Another familiar face.

Another betrayal.

Richard Hale stepped into the doorway.

But this time...

He was not alone.

Beside him stood Clara Hart.

Alive.

Calm.

And holding the real jade brooch.

Nobody spoke.

Three years of pain.

Three years of unanswered questions.

All standing in one room.

Evelyn stared at her sister.

"Why?"

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"I was trying to protect her."

Evelyn shook her head.

"No."

Her voice broke.

"You were hiding her."

Clara looked at Sophie.

Then back at Evelyn.

"I was hiding her from the people who would kill her."

Marcus stepped forward.

"Then why didn't you trust me?"

Clara looked at him.

Pain crossed her face.

"Because I trusted you too much."

The words shocked everyone.

Marcus stared.

"What does that mean?"

Clara held the brooch tightly.

"It means..."

"I learned the truth about what happened to Victor."

A pause.

"And the person responsible..."

She looked at Richard.

"Was someone none of us suspected."

Richard's expression did not change.

But Evelyn noticed.

A tiny movement.

A reaction.

Fear.

Clara continued:

"The person who destroyed our families..."

"Was not Victor Vane."

Everyone went silent.

"Then who?"

Evelyn whispered.

Clara looked directly at her.

"The person who has been standing beside you all along."

Evelyn's blood ran cold.

Because everyone in the room had secrets.

But only one person had been close enough to manipulate them all.

May you like

And now the truth was finally coming.

To be continued...
