Chapter 4

Chapter 4
The Woman Who Vanished
Evelyn Hart had always believed that missing people left behind traces.
A fingerprint.
A message.
A financial record.
A mistake.
Everyone made mistakes.
Even careful people.
Even powerful people.
But Clara Hart was different.
Her sister had disappeared like someone had erased her from the world.
No bank activity.
No medical records.
No travel history.
No witnesses.
Nothing.
For three years, Evelyn had searched through every possible explanation.
A kidnapping.
A planned disappearance.
A forced escape.
She never considered the possibility that Clara had been hiding by choice.
Until now.
The words Marcus Vane had spoken continued repeating in her mind.
"Clara wanted to protect Sophie."
Not abandon her.
Not leave her.
Protect her.
Those two words changed everything.
At 6:00 a.m., Evelyn arrived at the old Hart family home.
The house had been empty since Clara disappeared.
A place filled with memories.
And unanswered questions.
Dust covered the furniture.
The photographs remained exactly where Evelyn had left them.
Clara smiling.
Sophie as a baby.
Their parents standing proudly between them.
A normal family.
Or at least it looked normal.
Evelyn walked upstairs.
She stopped outside Clara's old bedroom.
For years, she had avoided opening that door.
Because part of her still believed Clara might walk through it.
She unlocked it.
The room smelled like old paper and lavender.
Exactly like her sister.
Evelyn walked inside.
Nothing seemed different.
But then she remembered something.
Clara never left anything important in obvious places.
When they were teenagers, Clara hid birthday presents inside books.
When their parents argued, Clara hid important documents beneath loose floorboards.
Clara trusted secrets more than people.
Evelyn searched.
The desk.
The closet.
The bookshelf.
Nothing.
Then she noticed the mirror.
A small scratch on the wooden frame.
Three lines.
A code.
Her breath stopped.
It was something only Clara and Evelyn knew.
A childhood game.
A way to communicate when they were afraid.
Evelyn pressed the hidden button behind the frame.
The mirror shifted.
Behind it was a small compartment.
Inside:
A USB drive.
A handwritten letter.
And an old photograph.
Evelyn picked up the letter first.
Her hands shook before she even opened it.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Evelyn,
If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from this mess.
Evelyn swallowed.
She continued.
I know you are angry. You have every right to be.
But please understand one thing. I did not leave Sophie because I wanted to.
A tear formed in Evelyn's eye.
I left because staying would have put her in the ground.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The pain was immediate.
Not because Clara had left.
Because Clara had been suffering alone.
The letter continued.
The people searching for the brooch are not searching for jewelry.
They are searching for proof.
Proof that Victor Vane stole what belonged to both our families.
Evelyn looked up.
The same story Marcus had told her.
But Clara's words carried something different.
Fear.
Sophie is the last legal heir.
Not because of money.
Because she can expose everything.
Evelyn's heart tightened.
Then she reached the final lines.
Do not trust Marcus completely.
She stopped.
Again.
The same warning.
But this time there was more.
He loves Sophie. I know that.
But love does not erase what his family has done.
Evelyn looked at the letter.
Clara wasn't saying Marcus was the enemy.
She was saying he was connected.
The final sentence was written differently.
Almost rushed.
If they find me, they will use me to find her.
Protect my daughter.
Even from me.
Evelyn stared at the paper.
Even from me?
What did that mean?
She inserted the USB drive into her laptop.
A single video file appeared.
Created:
Three years ago.
The day Clara disappeared.
Evelyn clicked play.
The screen showed Clara.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
But alive.
"Evelyn."
Hearing her voice after three years nearly destroyed her.
"I don't know if you will ever see this."
Clara looked away from the camera.
"Sophie is asleep upstairs."
Evelyn froze.
This recording had been made inside the house.
Clara continued.
"I wanted to tell you everything."
"But if I do, you will try to fight."
A sad smile appeared.
"And you always think you can win."
Evelyn almost laughed through her tears.
That was exactly something Clara would say.
"I found out the truth about Victor Vane."
Clara's expression changed.
"He didn't just steal a company."
"He destroyed people."
The video showed documents appearing on the screen.
Financial records.
Contracts.
Names.
Evelyn recognized several.
Powerful people.
People still alive.
People still respected.
"These people built their careers on lies."
Clara said.
"And Sophie is the only person who can legally expose them."
The video suddenly glitched.
Clara looked behind her.
Fear appeared.
Someone was there.
"Evelyn, listen carefully."
Her voice became urgent.
"Marcus did not betray me."
Evelyn leaned closer.
"He tried to help."
A sound came from outside the room.
Clara turned.
Then whispered:
"They found me."
The video ended.
Evelyn sat frozen.
The last image burned into her mind.
Clara's frightened face.
Someone had found her.
Her phone rang.
Marcus.
She almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then she answered.
"What?"
His voice was tense.
"You found something."
It was not a question.
Evelyn looked at the video.
"How do you know?"
"Because someone just tried to break into Vane Tower."
Silence.
"What?"
"They were looking for the same thing."
"The brooch."
Evelyn stood.
"Where are you?"
"At the tower."
"Stay there."
Marcus gave a quiet laugh.
"You still think you can order me around."
"Yes."
Another pause.
Then Marcus said:
"Clara would be proud."
Evelyn stopped.
"Don't say her name like you knew her."
"I did know her."
"Then tell me something."
"What?"
"Why did she disappear instead of trusting me?"
The line became silent.
For a moment, Evelyn thought Marcus had hung up.
Then he answered.
"Because the person she feared was someone close to you."
Her stomach tightened.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"You're lying."
"No."
Marcus said.
"I know who she suspected."
Evelyn gripped the phone.
"Tell me."
Marcus hesitated.
Then:
"Your father."
The world seemed to stop.
"My father is dead."
"I know."
"Then how?"
Marcus's voice became quiet.
"Because Clara believed he wasn't working alone."
Evelyn ended the call.
She stood inside her sister's room.
Holding the letter.
Watching the final image of Clara.
And for the first time in three years...
She allowed herself to consider the impossible.
Maybe her father had not been the man she thought he was.
Maybe Clara had not vanished.
Maybe she had been running.
Running from someone who knew every secret in the Hart family.
That night, Evelyn returned home.
Sophie was awake.
Sitting on the couch.
"You found something."
Evelyn stopped.
Children.
Always watching.
"Why do you say that?"
"Because you look like Mom."
The answer surprised her.
"What?"
"When Mom found something scary, she looked exactly like you."
Evelyn sat beside her.
"Sophie..."
The girl looked at her.
"Did she leave because of me?"
The question broke Evelyn's heart.
"No."
"Then why?"
Evelyn held her hand.
"Because she loved you."
Sophie looked down.
"Then why didn't she come back?"
Evelyn had no answer.
Not one that would hurt less.
Then the lights went out.
The entire apartment became dark.
Evelyn immediately stood.
"Sophie, stay behind me."
A sound came from the hallway.
Someone was inside.
Evelyn reached for the weapon hidden beneath the cabinet.
A shadow moved.
Then a voice whispered:
"Agent Hart."
She froze.
Because she recognized it.
The voice belonged to someone she trusted.
Someone who had helped her search for Clara.
Someone who knew everything.
The person stepped into the moonlight.
And Evelyn felt the blood leave her face.
Because the person standing there was the last person she expected.
"How long were you planning to keep Sophie from me?"
Sophie gasped.
Evelyn raised her weapon.
"Don't move."
The person smiled sadly.
"You still don't understand."
"I am not here to hurt her."
A pause.
"I am here because I know where Clara is."
And then Evelyn realized the truth.
The mystery was never about where Clara went.
The real question was:
May you like
Who had been helping her disappear?
To be continued...
