Chapter 13

The Trial of Truth

The world outside Blackwood Manor believed the war was about money.

They were wrong.

Money was only the surface.

The companies.

The inheritance.

The fortune.

The Vane empire.

All of it was just the visible part of something much darker.

The real battle was over a question nobody wanted answered.

Who had been protecting Sophie… and who had been controlling her?

By morning, Blackwood Manor was surrounded.

Reporters filled the road.

Lawyers arrived with folders thick enough to break a table.

Government officials demanded access.

The world wanted a story.

A billionaire’s hidden daughter.

A stolen inheritance.

A dead man’s secret recording.

A family full of betrayal.

But Evelyn Hart knew something the cameras did not.

The truth rarely looked clean.

Inside the mansion, nobody had slept.

Sophie sat beside the fireplace, wrapped in a blanket.

Marcus sat nearby.

For once, he was not trying to fix anything.

He was just watching his daughter.

Evelyn noticed.

"You are afraid."

Marcus looked at her.

"Yes."

The honesty surprised her.

"Of what?"

He looked at Sophie.

"That everyone keeps fighting over what she represents."

A pause.

"And nobody remembers she is a child."

Evelyn looked away.

Because that was exactly what she feared.

Richard entered the room.

"We have a problem."

Everyone looked at him.

At this point, nobody expected good news.

"What now?"

Evelyn asked.

"The court issued an emergency order."

Marcus stood.

"For Sophie?"

Richard nodded.

"They want temporary custody transferred until the inheritance investigation is complete."

Sophie became pale.

"Transferred to who?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Evelyn already knew.

"Say it."

Richard looked at her.

"The Vane Family Trust."

The room went cold.

Because everyone understood.

A trust had no face.

No emotions.

No love.

It was a perfect weapon.

"Who controls it?"

Marcus asked.

Richard hesitated.

"Currently?"

A pause.

"Damian Cross."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Of course."

The plan was becoming clear.

Damian did not need to kidnap Sophie.

He did not need to threaten her.

He could simply use the law.

Take the child.

Take the inheritance.

Take everything.

Legally.

Evelyn grabbed the documents.

"When is the hearing?"

"Today."

Everyone looked at her.

"Then we go."

The courtroom was packed.

Every seat was filled.

Reporters watched from behind the barriers.

The name Vane attracted attention.

But the name Hart attracted something else.

Suspicion.

Because after the final recording leaked, public opinion changed.

People asked:

Why was Evelyn always there?

Why did Victor mention her?

Why did Sophie trust her?

The internet had already decided.

Evelyn Hart was either the hero...

Or the person behind everything.

The judge entered.

The room became silent.

Damian Cross sat at the opposite table.

Confident.

Relaxed.

He looked like a man who knew the ending before the story began.

The judge looked over the documents.

"This court is reviewing temporary guardianship of Sophie Vane."

A pause.

"The child at the center of this dispute."

Evelyn looked at Sophie.

She hated that phrase.

The child.

Not Sophie.

Not a person.

A legal problem.

Damian stood.

"Your Honor, this case is not about wealth."

Everyone almost laughed.

"It is about safety."

He continued.

"The child has been hidden for years."

"Multiple adults have manipulated her identity."

"Her mother disappeared."

"Her father has a history of violence."

Marcus's jaw tightened.

Evelyn knew what was coming.

"And Agent Evelyn Hart..."

Damian turned.

"Has repeatedly withheld information from authorities."

The courtroom murmured.

The accusation was effective.

Because it contained pieces of truth.

The judge looked at Evelyn.

"Is this accurate?"

Evelyn stood.

"Some of it."

The room became silent.

Damian smiled.

"I withheld information."

Evelyn continued.

"Because I was protecting a child."

The judge studied her.

"Protection does not allow someone to ignore the law."

"No."

Evelyn agreed.

"But sometimes following the law blindly allows people to hurt innocent people."

A pause.

The judge looked at Sophie.

Then back at Evelyn.

"What evidence do you have?"

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

He stepped forward.

"I have records."

Damian's expression changed slightly.

Daniel connected a laptop.

"The documents submitted by the Vane Trust were altered."

The courtroom reacted.

Damian stood.

"Objection."

The judge raised a hand.

"Continue."

Daniel displayed the files.

"These ownership records were modified three years ago."

"After Sophie disappeared."

The judge frowned.

"Who modified them?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

"I did."

Shock spread through the courtroom.

Marcus looked at him.

"Daniel."

Daniel continued.

"But I did it under instructions."

Damian smiled.

"From Clara Hart?"

Daniel shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked confused.

"From Victor Vane."

Silence.

Damian's confidence disappeared.

"Impossible."

Daniel looked at him.

"That word again."

The judge demanded:

"Explain."

Daniel opened another file.

"Victor planned for his death."

"He created multiple versions of the inheritance documents."

"One public."

"One hidden."

"And one final version."

Evelyn leaned forward.

"The one Sophie carries."

Daniel nodded.

The judge looked at Sophie.

"What does this mean?"

Daniel answered:

"It means the trust has no authority."

Damian stood.

"That is speculation."

"No."

A new voice interrupted.

Everyone turned.

Clara Hart stood.

"I can prove it."

Evelyn stared.

"Clara?"

Clara walked forward.

She looked different.

Not like a woman hiding.

Like a woman who had finally accepted the consequences.

"I was there the night Victor recorded his final message."

Marcus looked at her.

"You said you didn't know."

"I lied."

The confession shocked everyone.

"Why?"

Marcus asked.

Clara looked at Sophie.

"Because Victor asked me to."

The judge leaned forward.

"Explain."

Clara took a breath.

"Victor knew someone would try to use the court system to take Sophie."

"He knew they would attack everyone around her."

She looked at Damian.

"Especially him."

Damian's face hardened.

"Careful."

Clara ignored him.

"Victor discovered Damian had been moving money from the Vane empire for years."

The courtroom erupted.

Damian immediately stood.

"Lies."

Clara continued.

"He was not trying to protect the company."

"He was trying to own it."

The judge looked at Damian.

"Do you have a response?"

Damian said nothing.

For the first time...

He looked uncertain.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

A woman entered.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stopped breathing.

Because she knew that face.

She had seen it in childhood photographs.

A face she thought existed only in memories.

Her mother.

Alive.

The woman looked directly at Evelyn.

"I think it's time I told my daughter the truth."

The entire courtroom fell silent.

"I am the reason Sophie disappeared."

Evelyn felt the world tilt.

The woman continued:

May you like

"And I am the person who started this war."

To be continued...
