Chapter 6

Chapter 6
The Enemy Inside
The first thing Evelyn Hart learned after the custody notice arrived was that dead men could still reach into the world and take things.
Money.
Companies.
Reputations.
Lives.
And apparently…
children.
The document sat on Evelyn’s kitchen table.
A simple piece of paper.
White.
Clean.
Professional.
But Evelyn had spent enough years in federal investigations to know something important.
The most dangerous weapons were often disguised as ordinary paperwork.
Sophie sat across from her, eating cereal while reporters shouted outside the apartment building.
The world had changed overnight.
Yesterday, Sophie was a quiet little girl who hated loud parties.
Today, she was the missing heir connected to one of the richest families in America.
Evelyn hated every second of it.
Because children were not headlines.
They were not assets.
They were not bargaining chips.
But the world saw Sophie differently.
They saw a name.
A bloodline.
An inheritance.
A key.
Marcus stood near the window, watching the reporters below.
For the first time since Evelyn met him, he looked powerless.
"How many?"
Evelyn asked.
Marcus didn't turn.
"How many what?"
"People trying to take her."
He was quiet.
"Officially?"
"Yes."
"Three law firms."
"Unofficially?"
His jaw tightened.
"Everyone."
Evelyn looked at the custody papers.
"The Victor Vane Foundation."
Marcus nodded.
"That foundation shouldn't exist."
"Why?"
"Because my father's entire estate was frozen after his death."
"So how can they file for custody?"
"Someone activated it."
Evelyn studied him.
"With what authority?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Someone with access to my father's private records."
The answer was obvious.
Someone close.
Someone powerful.
Someone who knew the Vane family's darkest secrets.
Daniel entered the apartment carrying a stack of files.
"Bad news."
Nobody laughed.
They had reached the point where bad news was expected.
"What happened?"
Evelyn asked.
Daniel placed the files down.
"The custody request was approved for emergency review."
Evelyn immediately stood.
"How?"
"Because the judge assigned to the case received information claiming Sophie is in danger."
"From who?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
"From Marcus."
Silence.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Of course.
They were using his past against him.
"The accusation?"
Evelyn asked.
Daniel opened the file.
"Claims that Marcus Vane attempted to publicly harm Sophie during the gala."
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"The video."
Daniel nodded.
"They are using the viral video as evidence."
The world had already decided.
Marcus was the villain.
And villains were easy to remove.
"We need proof."
Evelyn said.
"Proof of what?"
Daniel asked.
"That Marcus wasn't attacking Sophie."
Marcus looked at her.
"You believe me now?"
Evelyn looked back.
"I believe someone wanted us to believe you were guilty."
It wasn't forgiveness.
Not yet.
But it was the first step.
Later that afternoon, Evelyn returned to the gala hotel.
The Solstice Hotel.
The place where everything began.
The lobby looked perfect again.
As if nothing had happened.
That bothered her.
People cleaned floors.
They replaced flowers.
They repaired broken things.
But they never repaired the truth.
The hotel manager greeted her nervously.
"Agent Hart."
"Former agent."
He nodded quickly.
"Of course."
"I need security footage from the gala."
The manager looked uncomfortable.
"Already provided to investigators."
"All of it?"
A pause.
"No."
Evelyn noticed.
"What is missing?"
"The hallway cameras near the east ballroom entrance."
"Why?"
"They malfunctioned."
Evelyn almost smiled.
Cameras always malfunctioned at convenient times.
"Who handles maintenance?"
The manager looked away.
"That information is confidential."
"Everything is confidential until someone asks the right questions."
Ten minutes later, Evelyn had the answer.
The camera maintenance request came from:
Hartwell Security Solutions.
Her stomach tightened.
She knew that name.
Everyone in federal investigations knew that name.
One of the most trusted private security companies in the country.
And its founder was someone Evelyn knew personally.
Her former mentor.
Richard Hale.
Evelyn stared at the document.
No.
Impossible.
Richard had trained her.
He taught her how to investigate.
How to recognize manipulation.
He was the reason she became an agent.
Her phone rang.
Richard.
She answered.
"Hello, Evelyn."
His voice sounded exactly the same.
Calm.
Warm.
Which somehow made it worse.
"Did your company disable cameras at the Solstice Hotel?"
Silence.
A short silence.
But enough.
"I wondered when you would find that."
Evelyn felt cold.
"Why?"
"Because you are finally asking the right questions."
Her hand tightened around the phone.
"Did you know about Clara?"
Another pause.
"Yes."
The answer was so simple.
It almost hurt more.
"You knew?"
"I knew she was alive."
"Three years."
Evelyn whispered.
"You knew for three years."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Richard sighed.
"Because you would have destroyed everything trying to save her."
"She is my sister."
"Exactly."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"You were protecting someone."
"Yes."
"Who?"
Richard did not answer.
She already knew.
"Sophie."
A long silence.
Then Richard said:
"Sophie is not just Marcus Vane's daughter."
Evelyn frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"Her existence changes ownership of the entire Vane empire."
"I know."
"No."
Richard's voice became serious.
"You don't."
The line became quiet.
"The documents Victor Vane stole..."
Richard continued.
"They were not only about company ownership."
"Then what?"
"About something much bigger."
Evelyn waited.
Richard lowered his voice.
"Victor Vane built his empire using information collected from powerful people around the world."
"I know."
"But those files were hidden."
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Where?"
"Inside the original ownership records."
The brooch.
Again.
"The brooch doesn't just prove Sophie owns the company."
Evelyn whispered.
Richard answered:
"It proves who Victor blackmailed."
Suddenly everything became clear.
The brooch was not worth billions.
It was worth something much more dangerous.
The truth.
"Richard."
"Yes?"
"Are you the person who has been protecting Sophie?"
Silence.
Then:
"One of them."
Evelyn froze.
"One of them?"
"There are others."
"Who?"
Before he answered, the call ended.
That night, Evelyn returned home.
Sophie was asleep.
Marcus was reviewing documents.
Daniel was searching records.
Everything looked normal.
But Evelyn knew better.
The enemy was not outside.
Not anymore.
Because the people outside wanted Sophie for her inheritance.
The people inside knew why.
At midnight, Evelyn received a message.
A photo.
A security camera image.
A person entering the Hart family home three years earlier.
The person who helped Clara disappear.
The person holding baby Sophie.
Evelyn zoomed in.
Her heart stopped.
Because she recognized the face.
It was Richard Hale.
Below the photograph was one sentence.
THE PERSON WHO SAVED YOU IS THE PERSON WHO DESTROYED YOUR FAMILY.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
For years, she believed enemies came from outside.
She was wrong.
May you like
The most dangerous person was the one who knew exactly how much she trusted them.
To be continued...
