Chapter 12

Chapter 12
The Price of Protection
The room did not change.
The walls were still the same.
The old wooden floors still carried the weight of decades.
The candlelight still flickered across the faces of everyone standing inside Blackwood Manor.
But everything was different.
Because one sentence had destroyed the last piece of certainty they had.
The person responsible is the person Sophie has trusted the most.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody needed to.
Everyone was thinking the same thing.
Who did Sophie trust most?
The answer was obvious.
Evelyn Hart.
The woman who protected her.
The woman who found her.
The woman who promised she would never leave her.
The woman standing closest to her.
Sophie looked around the room.
Confusion filled her small face.
"Why is everyone looking at Aunt Evelyn?"
No one answered.
Evelyn felt something break inside her.
Not because they suspected her.
Because Sophie was the one person who should never have to question whether she was safe.
Evelyn slowly stepped away.
"Sophie."
The girl looked at her.
"Go with Marcus."
Sophie frowned.
"Why?"
"Because I need to talk."
"About what?"
Evelyn forced herself to smile.
"Adult things."
Sophie did not move.
She was smarter than people realized.
"Are you leaving me?"
The question stopped everyone.
Evelyn immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became softer.
"Never."
Marcus looked at Evelyn carefully.
"You knew about the recording?"
The accusation was quiet.
But it hurt.
Evelyn looked at him.
"No."
"Did Victor contact you?"
"No."
"Did you hide something?"
The silence lasted too long.
And everyone noticed.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Marcus's expression changed.
"What?"
Daniel stared at her.
"What did you hide?"
Evelyn looked at Sophie.
Then she made a decision.
A decision she had avoided for years.
"The night Clara disappeared..."
Her voice weakened.
"I was there."
Silence.
Clara looked shocked.
"You never told me."
"I couldn't."
"Why?"
"Because I promised."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Promised who?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"My father."
Everyone froze.
"My father knew Clara was leaving."
Clara stared.
"What?"
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"He knew someone was hunting Sophie."
"Then why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he believed telling you would get you killed."
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"So everyone decided my life for me."
Evelyn didn't argue.
Because he was right.
"The night Clara disappeared, my father gave me a message."
"What message?"
Clara whispered.
Evelyn looked down.
"He told me if anything happened to him..."
A pause.
"I had to protect Sophie."
Marcus's face changed.
"Your father knew."
"Yes."
"He knew Sophie existed."
"Yes."
The truth kept coming.
Another wall collapsing.
"Then why did he die?"
Marcus asked.
Evelyn looked away.
"Because he tried to expose them."
Adrian suddenly spoke.
"Not exactly."
Everyone turned.
Adrian leaned against the wall.
"Your father was not killed because he knew too much."
"Then why?"
Evelyn asked.
"Because he made the same mistake Victor made."
"What mistake?"
Adrian looked at Sophie.
"He thought protecting someone meant controlling the truth."
The sentence hit harder than expected.
Because everyone had done it.
Clara.
Richard.
Marcus.
Evelyn.
Everyone had decided they knew what Sophie needed.
Nobody asked what she wanted.
Sophie quietly said:
"I just wanted everyone to stop lying."
Nobody had an answer.
Then Richard stepped forward.
"Victor's recording was incomplete."
Evelyn looked at him.
"You knew."
"I suspected."
"You always know."
Richard accepted the accusation.
"Yes."
Marcus looked at him.
"Explain."
Richard took a deep breath.
"The final message was edited."
Daniel immediately looked at the recorder.
"By who?"
Richard looked at Evelyn.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Evelyn felt her stomach drop.
"Me?"
"No."
Richard shook his head.
"Not you."
Everyone waited.
"Someone used Evelyn's access codes."
Evelyn froze.
"My access codes?"
Richard nodded.
"Three years ago."
Daniel opened his laptop.
"I can check the logs."
Minutes passed.
Then Daniel stopped.
His expression changed.
"I found it."
Everyone moved closer.
The screen showed a security record.
A login.
A date.
A name.
Evelyn stared.
"No."
The account belonged to:
Evelyn Hart.
Marcus looked at her.
"How?"
"I don't know."
But then Evelyn remembered.
Three years ago.
The night Clara disappeared.
The night everything changed.
She had given someone access.
Someone she trusted.
Someone who said they needed information to help find Clara.
Her voice became barely audible.
"Daniel."
Everyone turned.
Daniel looked confused.
"What?"
Evelyn stared at him.
"Three years ago..."
"You asked for my credentials."
The room became silent.
Daniel's face changed.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Recognition.
Marcus slowly looked at him.
"Daniel?"
Daniel took a step back.
"No."
Evelyn's heart sank.
Because denial came too quickly.
"Explain."
Daniel looked around.
Everyone was watching him.
"I can explain."
"Then explain."
Daniel's hands trembled.
"I didn't betray you."
"Then why did you use my account?"
Silence.
Finally, Daniel whispered:
"Because Clara asked me to."
Everyone froze.
Clara looked at him.
"I never asked you to use her identity."
Daniel looked at her.
"I had no choice."
Evelyn stepped forward.
"What did you do?"
Daniel looked destroyed.
"The night Clara disappeared..."
"I helped her erase herself."
Marcus stared.
"You helped her run?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Sophie.
"Because someone was coming."
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Someone inside the Hart family."
Evelyn felt cold.
"Who?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Your mother."
The room went completely silent.
Evelyn shook her head.
"My mother died ten years ago."
Daniel nodded.
"I know."
"Then what are you saying?"
Daniel whispered:
"She wasn't dead."
Nobody moved.
Another impossible truth.
Another person who was supposed to be gone.
Clara covered her mouth.
Richard stepped back.
Even Adrian looked surprised.
Daniel continued:
"Your mother discovered the Vane archive."
"She discovered the inheritance."
"She discovered Sophie."
Evelyn stared.
"Why would she hide?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Because she was not protecting Sophie."
A pause.
"She was protecting herself."
Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.
The war had changed.
It was no longer Vane against Hart.
It was not about money.
Not about companies.
Not about inheritance.
It was about the secrets families buried to survive.
And now the deepest secret had returned.
Evelyn Hart's mother was alive.
May you like
And she was the only person who knew the real reason Sophie had been hidden.
To be continued...
