Chapter 7

Chapter 7
The Lost Fortune
The photograph stayed on Evelyn Hart’s screen until sunrise.
She did not sleep.
She did not move.
She simply stared at the image of Richard Hale holding baby Sophie three years earlier.
The man who taught her how to find the truth.
The man who told her never to trust appearances.
The man who stood beside her during the darkest years of her career.
The man who might have helped hide her sister.
Evelyn had spent her life believing loyalty was earned through actions.
Richard had saved her career.
He had protected her when powerful people tried to destroy her.
He had been the person she called when she had nowhere else to turn.
Now she wondered if every act of kindness had been part of a larger plan.
The most painful betrayals were not committed by strangers.
They were committed by people who knew exactly where to place the knife.
"Evelyn."
She looked up.
Marcus stood in the doorway.
He looked exhausted.
Not the polished billionaire from magazine covers.
Not the man who owned skyscrapers.
Just a tired father.
"You haven't slept."
"Neither have you."
Marcus looked at the photograph on her phone.
Immediately, his expression changed.
"Where did you get that?"
"Someone sent it."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Marcus stepped closer.
"That's Richard Hale."
"You know him?"
Marcus gave a humorless laugh.
"Everyone who survives powerful families knows him."
Evelyn watched him carefully.
"What does that mean?"
"Richard Hale is not just a security expert."
Marcus looked at the image.
"He was my father's closest advisor."
The room went silent.
Evelyn felt anger rise.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I didn't know he was involved."
"You knew his connection to Victor."
"Yes."
"And you said nothing."
Marcus looked at her.
"Because I thought Richard was one of the few people who wanted to expose him."
Evelyn laughed once.
A cold, bitter sound.
"Apparently everyone wanted to expose Victor Vane."
"But everyone also had something to hide."
That was the problem.
There was no innocent side anymore.
Only people with different reasons for keeping secrets.
Daniel entered carrying a folder.
"I found something."
Nobody looked surprised.
At this point, every discovery only created more questions.
"What?"
Evelyn asked.
"The Vane inheritance records."
Marcus immediately turned.
"Where?"
"Hidden in a private archive."
Daniel placed the folder down.
"The original estate documents."
Evelyn opened it.
Inside were pages of legal agreements.
Ownership transfers.
Company structures.
But one name appeared repeatedly.
Hart-Vane Holdings.
The forgotten company.
The one Marcus had mentioned.
"Victor didn't steal Vane International."
Evelyn said quietly.
"He stole Hart-Vane."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel pointed to a section.
"Look here."
Evelyn read.
A clause.
A succession agreement.
Her eyes narrowed.
"What is this?"
Marcus answered.
"The original ownership agreement."
"Explain."
"Before Victor betrayed both families, Hart and Vane families agreed that the company would belong to the descendants of both bloodlines."
Evelyn looked confused.
"Meaning?"
Marcus pointed.
"The company cannot legally belong to one family."
A pause.
"It belongs to the first child born from both lines."
Evelyn felt cold.
"Sophie."
Marcus nodded.
"Sophie is the legal heir."
Not just Vane.
Not just Hart.
Both.
The lost fortune was never lost.
It was hidden.
Waiting.
"But why hide it?"
Evelyn asked.
Marcus looked at the documents.
"Because Victor knew one thing."
"What?"
"He could control adults."
A pause.
"But he couldn't control a child who inherited everything."
Suddenly, Evelyn understood.
Sophie was not just a daughter.
She was a reset button.
If Sophie claimed ownership, Victor's entire empire could collapse.
Every company.
Every secret.
Every illegal deal.
Everything could be exposed.
The phone rang.
Daniel answered.
His expression changed.
"What?"
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
"That was the courthouse."
Evelyn stood.
"What happened?"
"The custody hearing was moved."
"When?"
"Tomorrow morning."
"That's impossible."
"It was approved."
Marcus's face darkened.
"Who requested the change?"
Daniel looked at him.
"The judge received a personal recommendation."
"From who?"
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
"Richard Hale."
Nobody spoke.
Richard was everywhere.
The security company.
The investigation.
The legal system.
The custody case.
He wasn't following the game.
He was controlling the board.
That evening, Evelyn confronted Richard.
Not by phone.
In person.
She found him inside his private office at Hartwell Security Solutions.
He looked unsurprised.
"You found the photograph."
Evelyn closed the door behind her.
"Did you send it?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
Richard smiled sadly.
"You still think this is about finding one enemy."
Evelyn stared.
"Are you protecting Sophie or controlling her?"
The smile disappeared.
"Careful."
"No."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"You be careful."
For a moment, the old Richard appeared.
The mentor.
The man she respected.
Then it vanished.
"You think Marcus deserves custody?"
Richard asked.
"I think Sophie deserves the truth."
Richard looked away.
"Truth is dangerous."
"Only when people have something to lose."
Richard opened a drawer.
Inside was a small velvet box.
Evelyn recognized it immediately.
The same type of box as the brooch.
Her heart stopped.
"You have it."
Richard looked at her.
"The brooch was never stolen."
Evelyn froze.
"What?"
"The brooch you saw at the gala was a copy."
The room went silent.
"What are you saying?"
Richard opened the box.
Inside was a jade-colored brooch.
Different.
Older.
More detailed.
"The real one never left Sophie."
Evelyn stared.
"Where is Sophie?"
Richard looked at her.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
"That's the problem."
"What?"
"The real brooch contains something Victor hid."
Evelyn felt her blood run cold.
"What?"
Richard whispered:
"The location of the lost fortune."
A sudden realization hit her.
Someone had not kidnapped Sophie because of her identity.
They wanted what Sophie carried.
The secret hidden since Victor Vane built his empire.
Evelyn grabbed Richard's collar.
"Where is she?"
Richard did not resist.
He only said:
"You're too late."
Her heart stopped.
"Why?"
Richard looked toward the window.
Because outside...
A black vehicle was parked across the street.
And inside it...
Sophie was sitting.
Evelyn's world shattered.
"Who took her?"
Richard whispered:
"The person who knows the location of the fortune."
The vehicle started moving.
Evelyn ran toward the door.
But before she reached it, her phone received a message.
A video.
Sophie sitting in the back seat.
Calm.
Not crying.
Because she knew someone had taught her what to do.
Then a voice spoke from behind the camera.
A voice Evelyn had not heard in three years.
A voice she thought she would never hear again.
"Hello, Evelyn."
Clara Hart.
The message ended.
And Evelyn understood the impossible truth.
Clara was not missing.
May you like
She was involved.
To be continued...
