Chapter 11

Chapter 11
The Last Recording
The man standing at the entrance of Blackwood Manor did not look like someone who had come to start a war.
That was what made him dangerous.
He was calm.
Elegant.
Almost polite.
He wore a dark suit without a single wrinkle. His silver hair was perfectly arranged, his expression controlled, his hands empty.
No weapon.
No anger.
No fear.
The most dangerous people were rarely the ones who looked dangerous.
They were the ones who believed they had already won.
Marcus Vane stared at him.
"Damian Cross."
The man smiled.
"I see you remember me."
Evelyn immediately noticed Marcus's reaction.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
And hatred.
"Who is he?" Evelyn asked.
Nobody answered.
Damian stepped forward.
"I suppose introductions are necessary."
He looked around the room.
"Damian Cross. Former chairman of Vane International's advisory board."
A pause.
"Current legal representative of the original Vane family trust."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"Legal representative?"
Damian smiled.
"Someone must protect the family's assets."
She looked at Sophie.
"And you believe she is an asset."
Damian's expression remained calm.
"I believe she is the reason thousands of people will lose everything if the wrong decisions are made."
Marcus stepped forward.
"You don't get to speak about her."
Damian looked at him.
"Still emotional."
A small smile.
"Exactly why Victor never trusted you."
Marcus froze.
The sentence landed.
Evelyn saw it.
A wound.
An old one.
"Enough."
Evelyn said.
Everyone looked at her.
"Nobody touches Sophie."
Damian looked amused.
"And you are?"
"Someone who doesn't care about your money."
For the first time, Damian's smile faded.
Because people who did not care about money were difficult to control.
"I know who you are, Agent Hart."
"Former agent."
"Of course."
He glanced toward Richard.
"You trained her well."
Richard said nothing.
Evelyn noticed.
Again.
The silence.
The secrets.
"What do you want?"
she asked.
Damian looked at Sophie.
"The truth."
Everyone almost laughed.
After everything.
Another person claiming to want the truth.
"You expect us to believe that?"
Marcus asked.
Damian looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"I expect you to believe evidence."
He opened a briefcase.
Inside was a small recorder.
Old.
Black.
Worn.
Evelyn immediately recognized it.
A voice recorder.
"Where did you get that?"
Clara whispered.
Damian looked at her.
"You know exactly where."
Clara went pale.
Evelyn turned.
"Clara?"
Clara didn't answer.
Damian placed the recorder on the table.
"This is the last recording made by Victor Vane."
Silence.
Marcus stared.
"My father?"
"Yes."
"Impossible."
Damian smiled slightly.
"That word again."
Evelyn stepped closer.
"What does it contain?"
Damian looked at everyone.
"The reason Victor died."
Nobody moved.
"Play it."
Evelyn said.
Damian pressed the button.
At first, only static.
Then breathing.
An older man's voice.
Weak.
Tired.
But unmistakable.
Victor Vane.
"If someone is hearing this..."
A pause.
"Then I failed."
Marcus closed his eyes.
Hearing his father's voice after years changed something.
"I spent my life believing control was protection."
Victor continued.
"I was wrong."
The room became silent.
"I built an empire by collecting people's secrets."
"I believed secrets gave me power."
A cough.
"But secrets are not power."
"They are chains."
Evelyn looked at Clara.
Clara was crying silently.
"I discovered someone inside my family was using my own archive against me."
Everyone froze.
"My documents."
"My agreements."
"My records."
"They were being prepared for one purpose."
A pause.
"To erase my bloodline."
Marcus looked at Sophie.
"Because my heir would expose everything."
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, my granddaughter Sophie is alive."
Sophie stepped back.
Her face changed.
He knew.
Victor knew.
"He looked into the future."
Evelyn whispered.
"She is the only person who can legally destroy what I built."
Damian watched everyone.
"Because Victor knew his empire was corrupted."
The recording continued.
"But there is one person I trusted above everyone."
A pause.
Long.
Painful.
"Someone who promised to protect my family."
Evelyn held her breath.
"Someone I considered my own child."
Everyone looked at Richard.
Richard's face changed.
The recording continued.
"Richard."
The room exploded into silence.
Sophie looked confused.
Marcus looked shocked.
Clara looked heartbroken.
Evelyn looked at Richard.
"No."
Richard closed his eyes.
Victor's voice continued.
"If you are hearing this, Richard betrayed me."
Nobody spoke.
"He did not kill me."
Everyone froze.
"He did something worse."
A pause.
"He saved me."
Evelyn frowned.
What?
"Richard discovered the people trying to kill me."
Victor continued.
"He discovered the conspiracy."
The room became impossible to understand.
"But instead of exposing them..."
Static.
Then:
"He made a deal."
The recording stopped.
Nobody breathed.
Damian looked satisfied.
"That's all."
Evelyn stared.
"That's not enough."
"No."
Damian agreed.
"Because the rest of the recording is missing."
Marcus looked at him.
"Where is it?"
Damian smiled.
"That is the question."
Then Daniel suddenly spoke.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
He looked at the recorder.
"The file structure."
"What?"
Evelyn asked.
Daniel took the device.
"There is a hidden partition."
Damian's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Evelyn saw it.
"You knew."
She looked at Damian.
"You knew there was more."
Damian said nothing.
Daniel connected the recorder to his laptop.
A password appeared.
Everyone stared.
"Can you break it?"
Marcus asked.
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Then Sophie stepped forward.
"I know it."
Everyone turned.
"What?"
Evelyn asked.
Sophie looked at the recorder.
"Mom showed me."
Clara froze.
"When?"
"Before we came here."
The little girl entered the password.
Six numbers.
The screen unlocked.
A single file appeared.
FINAL MESSAGE FOR SOPHIE
Nobody moved.
Evelyn felt a chill.
Victor had prepared this.
For a child.
For the granddaughter he never got to raise.
Sophie pressed play.
Victor's voice returned.
But this time...
He was not speaking to everyone.
He was speaking to her.
"My dear Sophie."
The girl covered her mouth.
"If you are hearing this, then everyone has failed you."
Tears filled her eyes.
"I am sorry."
The old man's voice trembled.
"I built a world where children inherited the consequences of adults."
A pause.
"You are not the key to my fortune."
"You are not the future of my company."
"You are my family."
Sophie started crying.
"And I need you to know the truth."
The recording became quieter.
"The person who caused everything..."
Everyone leaned closer.
"The person who destroyed our family..."
Static.
Then the final sentence.
"Was not Richard."
Evelyn's eyes widened.
"Was not Adrian."
Marcus froze.
"Was not Victor."
The room became cold.
"Because the person responsible..."
A long pause.
"Is the person Sophie has trusted the most."
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Slowly...
Everyone looked toward Sophie.
Then toward the person standing closest to her.
Evelyn.
Her heart stopped.
Because Victor's final words had changed everything.
The enemy was not outside.
The enemy was not hidden.
The enemy was the person who had spent the entire time protecting Sophie.
And everyone in the room had only one question.
May you like
Was Evelyn Hart the reason the Vane family fell?
To be continued...
