Chapter 10 – The Coldest Trap

Chapter 10 – The Coldest Trap

Rebecca Lawson was still alive.

That single fact changed everything.

For weeks, Ethan and David had been chasing evidence.

Now they were racing against time.

If Rebecca testified, Ryan Mitchell's carefully constructed web of lies could collapse overnight.

If she disappeared...

Every piece of evidence would become easier to dismiss.

David parked outside a small warehouse the FBI often used for joint investigations.

Inside, a whiteboard covered one wall.

Photographs of Vanessa.

Ryan.

Michael Lawson.

Rebecca.

Financial records.

Phone logs.

Security footage.

Everything was connected by red strings.

David looked at Ethan.

"We've reached the point where surveillance isn't enough."

Ethan nodded.

"So what do we do?"

"We force Ryan to make a mistake."

The plan was dangerous.

Ryan had spent months controlling every move.

He believed he was always one step ahead.

The only way to expose him...

Was to convince him he had already won.

Meanwhile, Nathan proudly announced the date of the gender reveal party.

Next Saturday.

Friends.

Family.

Business partners.

Everyone important would be there.

Vanessa nearly dropped her coffee.

"Nathan..."

"Maybe we should keep it small."

He smiled.

"Our child deserves a celebration."

She forced a smile.

Inside, panic spread through her.

Ryan had already warned her.

The final phase would begin soon.

That afternoon, Ethan visited Nathan's office.

"I heard about the party."

Nathan grinned.

"You'll be there."

"Of course."

Ethan hesitated.

"I was thinking..."

"What?"

"You should invite Michael."

Nathan laughed.

"He helped organize most of it."

Exactly what Ethan wanted to hear.

If Michael attended...

Ryan would know about every detail.

Back at David's office, the investigator outlined the trap.

"We're going to leak false information."

Ethan leaned forward.

"What kind?"

David smiled slightly.

"We'll let Ryan believe Rebecca escaped."

The story spread exactly as planned.

An anonymous tip reached one of Ryan's informants.

The message was simple.

Rebecca Lawson has agreed to testify.

She'll appear at Nathan's gender reveal.

It was completely false.

Rebecca was still missing.

But Ryan didn't know that.

Ryan received the message just after sunset.

He read it twice.

Then immediately called Michael.

"Cancel everything."

Michael frowned.

"What happened?"

"Rebecca."

"I thought she disappeared."

"So did I."

Ryan's voice hardened.

"If she speaks..."

"We're finished."

Michael lowered his voice.

"What do you want me to do?"

Ryan answered without hesitation.

"Find her."

"And if someone else finds her first..."

The silence that followed said everything.

Vanessa overheard only part of the conversation.

It was enough.

Ryan wasn't planning another lie.

He was planning murder.

Again.

The next morning, David's surveillance team noticed unusual movement.

Ryan's black Mercedes left his office before dawn.

Instead of heading toward downtown...

He drove north.

Exactly where Rebecca's last phone signal had originated.

David smiled.

"He took the bait."

Three unmarked vehicles followed from a safe distance.

Ryan never noticed.

He was too focused on reaching the farmhouse.

Inside the old building, Rebecca sat exactly where Ryan had left her.

Her hands were bruised from struggling against the ropes.

The sound of footsteps echoed outside.

She closed her eyes.

The door opened.

Ryan entered.

"You've caused me a great deal of trouble."

Rebecca whispered,

"I never wanted any of this."

"You should've thought about that before stealing medical records."

"I didn't steal them."

"You paid me."

Ryan smiled.

"And who would believe that?"

He pulled a syringe from his jacket.

Rebecca's face turned pale.

"What are you doing?"

"Cleaning up."

Outside...

David watched through binoculars from nearly two hundred yards away.

He quietly spoke into his radio.

"Hold positions."

"No one moves until he confesses."

Ethan looked horrified.

"He's going to kill her."

David kept watching.

"Not if we time this correctly."

Inside the farmhouse, Ryan stepped closer.

"You know what the funny thing is?"

Rebecca remained silent.

"Nathan still believes he's becoming a father."

He laughed softly.

"A grown man building a nursery for a child that never existed."

Rebecca shook her head.

"You're sick."

Ryan crouched beside her.

"No."

"I'm successful."

He lifted the syringe.

"Goodbye, Rebecca."

Before the needle touched her skin...

A loud voice thundered through the building.

"Federal agents!"

"Drop the weapon!"

Ryan spun toward the window.

Glass exploded inward.

Flashbang grenades detonated.

The room filled with light and deafening noise.

Rebecca screamed.

Ryan dove behind a table.

David kicked open the front door.

"FBI!"

"Don't move!"

Ryan fired one desperate shot.

The bullet shattered a ceiling beam.

Agents returned fire—not at Ryan, but at the wall beside him, forcing him deeper into cover.

Within seconds...

The farmhouse was surrounded.

Ryan realized something.

This wasn't coincidence.

It was a trap.

Rebecca had never escaped.

Someone had manipulated him into revealing himself.

He looked toward David.

"You set me up."

David answered calmly.

"No."

"You walked into your own lies."

Ryan suddenly grabbed Rebecca and pulled her in front of him.

"Everyone back!"

Rebecca cried out in pain.

David slowly lowered his weapon.

"Ethan."

"Talk to him."

Ethan stepped forward carefully.

"Ryan."

"It's over."

Ryan laughed.

"No."

"You still don't understand."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"You've spent weeks chasing the wrong woman."

Ethan frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Ryan smiled.

"Vanessa isn't the real prize."

Before anyone could ask another question...

Ryan shoved Rebecca aside and sprinted through a rear doorway.

Agents chased him into the woods.

Gunfire echoed between the trees.

Then...

Silence.

Ten minutes later, officers returned.

Empty-handed.

Ryan had escaped.

But Rebecca was alive.

Wrapped in a blanket inside an ambulance, Rebecca finally looked at Ethan.

"I'll tell you everything."

David nodded reassuringly.

"Start at the beginning."

Rebecca took a deep breath.

"It wasn't Vanessa who first came to me."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Rebecca looked at Ethan with exhausted eyes.

"The first person who asked me to fake an ultrasound..."

"...was your sister."

Ethan's blood ran cold.

"Olivia?"

Rebecca slowly nodded.

"She told me it was only a harmless favor."

"I didn't even know Ryan Mitchell's name until weeks later."

The revelation hit Ethan like a punch.

He had believed Olivia was only taking suspicious payments.

Now it appeared she had helped launch the conspiracy from the very beginning.

As the ambulance doors closed and sirens echoed into the night, Ethan realized the investigation had taken an even darker turn.

The greatest betrayal might not have come from outside the Carter family.

May you like

It might have started from within.
