Chapter 11 – The Belly Falls

Chapter 11 – The Belly Falls

The truth about Olivia Carter spread through Ethan's mind like poison.

His own sister.

The woman Nathan trusted almost as much as he trusted Ethan.

Rebecca Lawson had identified her without hesitation.

"She was the first one who asked me for an ultrasound."

David Mercer remained cautious.

"One witness isn't enough."

"We still need proof."

Rebecca nodded weakly from her hospital bed.

"There is proof."

Both men looked at her.

"I saved every email."

The FBI immediately secured Rebecca's laptop from a storage unit she had rented months earlier.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Invoices.

Medical templates.

Deleted emails.

Encrypted messages.

One folder was labeled simply:

Maternity Project.

David opened it carefully.

The first email appeared on the screen.

From: Olivia Carter

Subject: We need something convincing.

The message was short.

The images must look authentic. No names. No hospital information.

David slowly leaned back.

"This changes everything."

Meanwhile, Nathan was putting the finishing touches on the gender reveal party.

The backyard had been transformed.

White tents stretched across the lawn.

Blue and pink flowers lined the walkways.

A string quartet rehearsed near the garden fountain.

Family members arrived carrying gifts.

Neighbors stopped by with balloons.

Nathan smiled at every guest.

"This is going to be the happiest day of our lives."

Vanessa stood beside him, her smile barely holding together.

She knew this wasn't a celebration.

It was the day her lies would finally collapse.

Across town, David met with FBI agents.

Rebecca's testimony had given them probable cause.

But they still needed one undeniable moment.

One piece of evidence that no jury could ignore.

David looked at Ethan.

"We're not exposing Vanessa today."

"We're exposing the fraud."

Ethan nodded.

"How?"

David smiled.

"We let the lie destroy itself."

The party began at noon.

Nathan welcomed everyone warmly.

His parents.

Business partners.

Friends.

Even Michael Lawson arrived carrying an expensive baby gift.

Olivia hugged Vanessa tightly.

"You look beautiful."

Vanessa barely whispered,

"Thank you."

She couldn't even look her in the eyes.

Ryan Mitchell wasn't there.

Officially.

But hidden inside a black SUV parked across the street, he watched every guest arrive through binoculars.

He smiled.

Everything was still under control.

Or so he believed.

An hour later, Nathan tapped a champagne glass.

"Can I have everyone's attention?"

The conversations faded.

Nathan wrapped an arm around Vanessa.

"I've waited years for this moment."

His voice cracked with emotion.

"I never imagined becoming a father would make me this happy."

Vanessa lowered her head.

Every word felt like another knife.

Nathan continued.

"Before we reveal whether we're having a boy or a girl..."

"I'd like to thank someone."

He smiled at Ethan.

"My brother."

"For always looking out for me."

Ethan's heart sank.

Nathan had no idea.

Just then, David Mercer quietly entered the backyard.

He wasn't alone.

Two FBI agents walked several steps behind him.

Guests exchanged confused glances.

Nathan frowned.

"Ethan?"

"What is this?"

Ethan stepped forward.

"I'm sorry."

Nathan looked bewildered.

"For what?"

David spoke calmly.

"We're conducting an investigation involving financial fraud."

Michael Lawson's face instantly lost its color.

Ryan, watching from the SUV, gripped the steering wheel.

"No..."

David continued.

"We're asking everyone to remain calm."

"This won't take long."

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

She had turned completely pale.

"Vanessa?"

She didn't answer.

At that moment, one of the agents smiled politely.

"Mrs. Carter."

"We have a medical professional here."

"As part of the investigation, we'd like to verify certain documents."

Nathan looked confused.

"What documents?"

"The pregnancy records."

Vanessa's breathing became shallow.

"No."

David remained calm.

"You've claimed to be nearly six months pregnant."

"A brief medical examination will resolve every question."

Nathan looked from David...

...to Vanessa.

"What's going on?"

Vanessa slowly stepped backward.

"I don't..."

"I can't."

Nathan reached for her hand.

"Why not?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I..."

Olivia suddenly interrupted.

"This is ridiculous!"

"She's pregnant!"

David looked at her.

"Then you have nothing to worry about."

The backyard became completely silent.

Every guest watched.

Vanessa's breathing quickened.

Nathan gently squeezed her hand.

"Please."

"If this clears everything up..."

"We'll laugh about it later."

His kindness broke the last piece of her resolve.

She looked at him.

Really looked at him.

The man she had lied to every single day.

The man who had built a nursery.

The man who believed he was about to become a father.

"I'm sorry..."

she whispered.

Nathan frowned.

"For what?"

Vanessa turned and ran.

Gasps erupted across the garden.

She pushed through the crowd toward the driveway.

Ethan immediately followed.

"Vanessa!"

She reached the front steps.

Her heel caught the edge of the stone walkway.

She stumbled.

Her arms flailed.

She crashed onto the lawn.

The impact echoed through the silent crowd.

Then came a sound no one expected.

A dull, rubber-like thud.

Something rolled beneath her dress.

Stopped.

And slowly emerged from under the fabric.

A flesh-colored silicone pregnancy prosthetic.

Perfectly shaped.

Perfectly weighted.

Perfectly fake.

The world seemed to stop.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Nathan stared at the object lying in the grass.

His face emptied of all expression.

He looked back at Vanessa.

Then at the prosthetic.

Then back again.

His lips parted.

"No..."

Vanessa covered her face and began sobbing.

"I'm sorry..."

"I'm so sorry..."

Nathan took one slow step backward.

His voice barely existed.

"The baby..."

"There was never..."

He couldn't finish the sentence.

Nathan's mother burst into tears.

His father lowered his head in disbelief.

Guests whispered in stunned horror.

Michael Lawson quietly tried to slip away.

An FBI agent immediately blocked his path.

"Not today."

Handcuffs clicked around Michael's wrists.

Across the street, Ryan watched everything unfold.

His smile vanished.

The trap had worked.

The lie was over.

He slammed the SUV into gear and sped away before surveillance units could intercept him.

Nathan remained frozen.

Years of trust.

Months of hope.

Thousands of dreams.

Gone.

Destroyed in a single second.

Vanessa crawled toward him on her knees.

"I never wanted this."

"I was forced."

"I can explain."

Nathan stepped away.

Every movement seemed painfully slow.

"You let me..."

He swallowed hard.

"You let me love a child..."

"...that never existed."

Vanessa broke down completely.

"I'm sorry."

Nathan looked at the nursery visible through the living room window.

The tiny crib.

The stuffed elephant.

The bookshelf.

Everything he had built for a baby who had never been real.

A single tear rolled down his face.

Not because he had lost a child.

But because he finally realized...

There had never been one to lose.

As agents escorted Michael toward an unmarked vehicle, David quietly approached Ethan.

"It's over."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

He looked toward the empty road where Ryan had escaped.

"The biggest liar is still free."

David nodded.

"And now..."

"We're going after him."

Behind them, Nathan remained standing alone in the middle of the lawn.

Surrounded by family.

Surrounded by friends.

Yet he had never felt more alone.

The fake belly had fallen.

But the far greater weight—

the betrayal of the people he trusted most—

May you like

had only just begun to crush him.
