Chapter 8 – A Marriage Built on Blackmail

Chapter 8 – A Marriage Built on Blackmail

Nathan Carter had always believed his marriage was built on love.

He remembered the day he met Vanessa at a charity fundraiser.

She had laughed at one of his terrible jokes.

He had offered to walk her to her car.

Six months later, they were engaged.

A year after that, they were married.

Every memory felt genuine.

Every smile felt real.

Now, without realizing it, Nathan was living inside a carefully constructed illusion.

Ethan drove directly from Samuel's workplace to David Mercer's office.

The evidence wall had grown larger.

Photographs.

Bank transfers.

Hotel surveillance.

The fake ultrasound.

The costume shop receipts.

Now, Samuel's statement joined the collection.

David folded his arms.

"We're getting close."

"Close isn't enough," Ethan replied.

"Nathan still won't believe us."

David nodded.

"Then we stop trying to prove Vanessa lied."

Ethan looked up.

"We prove why she lied."

David returned to Vanessa's financial records.

For months, every payment from Ryan Mitchell had arrived through shell companies.

Consulting fees.

Marketing reimbursements.

Travel expenses.

Nothing directly connected to Vanessa.

Until one transfer caught his attention.

A monthly payment labeled:

Property Maintenance

The money wasn't going to Vanessa.

It was paying the mortgage on a small house outside Asheville.

David searched the property records.

The owner wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Ryan.

It belonged to Vanessa's younger brother.

Lucas Reed.

Ethan frowned.

"I thought Vanessa said she was an only child."

"So did I."

David answered.

"She lied."

Within hours, David located Lucas.

The small house looked neglected.

The lawn was overgrown.

Paint peeled from the porch.

Lucas answered the door cautiously.

He looked exhausted.

Dark circles surrounded his eyes.

When David introduced himself, Lucas immediately tried to close the door.

"I have nothing to say."

David stopped him gently.

"We're not here to hurt you."

Lucas hesitated.

Then quietly asked,

"Did Ryan send you?"

Ethan exchanged a glance with David.

"No."

Lucas slowly opened the door.

Inside, the truth began to emerge.

Photographs covered one wall.

Most showed Vanessa as a teenager.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Holding a much younger Lucas.

Nathan had never seen these pictures.

He had never even heard Lucas's name.

Lucas sat heavily on the couch.

"She told him I didn't exist."

Ethan nodded.

"Why?"

Lucas looked toward the floor.

"Because Ryan told her to."

David leaned forward.

"What does Ryan have on Vanessa?"

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened an old metal box hidden beneath the coffee table.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Court documents.

Medical bills.

And one police report.

David carefully unfolded it.

Seven years earlier...

Lucas had been arrested for armed robbery.

The victim had survived.

Lucas had accepted a plea deal.

Sentence:

Eight years in prison.

Except...

He had never gone to prison.

The conviction had disappeared.

David looked up.

"How?"

Lucas laughed bitterly.

"Ryan."

"He knew people."

"He paid lawyers."

"He made everything disappear."

"But nothing is free."

Lucas wiped his eyes.

"He told Vanessa she owed him."

The room fell silent.

Lucas finally confessed.

"My sister never loved Ryan."

"She was terrified of him."

"He told her if she ever refused him..."

"...he'd reopen my case."

Ethan slowly sat back.

"So the pregnancy..."

Lucas nodded.

"Blackmail."

Meanwhile, Nathan prepared a surprise anniversary dinner.

Candles.

Flowers.

Vanessa's favorite violin music.

He wanted to remind her that no matter how stressful pregnancy became...

She wasn't facing it alone.

When Vanessa walked through the front door, she froze.

The dining room looked beautiful.

Nathan smiled warmly.

"Happy anniversary."

She forced herself to smile.

"You remembered."

"I remember everything."

Those words pierced her heart.

Because she remembered everything too.

Every lie.

Every fake appointment.

Every forged document.

Every moment Nathan had trusted her without question.

As they finished dinner, Nathan reached into his pocket.

"I have something."

He placed a small velvet box on the table.

Vanessa opened it slowly.

Inside was a delicate gold bracelet.

Engraved with three words.

Our Little Family.

Her hands began shaking.

Nathan noticed.

"Are you alright?"

She couldn't answer.

Instead, she stood abruptly.

"I need some air."

She hurried outside before the tears could betray her.

Nathan watched from the doorway, confused.

He had expected happiness.

Instead, Vanessa looked devastated.

Across town, Ryan received a phone call.

One of his associates spoke urgently.

"Someone visited Lucas."

Ryan's smile vanished.

"Who?"

"A private investigator."

"And Nathan's brother."

Ryan ended the call without another word.

He immediately dialed Vanessa.

She answered after the second ring.

"They know about Lucas."

Her breathing stopped.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"You have one job."

"Stay in control."

"I can't."

"You can."

Ryan's voice hardened.

"If Nathan learns the truth..."

"...your brother goes back to prison."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Please..."

"I'm begging you."

Ryan interrupted.

"Begging never impressed me."

The line went dead.

Later that night, Ethan and David reviewed Lucas's testimony.

David sighed.

"So Vanessa isn't innocent."

"No."

Ethan agreed.

"But she's not the mastermind either."

David nodded.

"She's trapped."

Ethan looked toward the evidence wall.

"A trapped person still makes choices."

"She could have told Nathan."

"She could have walked away."

"Instead..."

"...she helped destroy him."

The next morning, David made one final discovery.

Using financial records from Ryan's shell companies, he uncovered payments to another recipient.

Not Michael Lawson.

Not Vanessa.

Someone new.

The recipient's name made both men stare in disbelief.

Olivia Carter.

Nathan's younger sister.

Ethan slowly lowered the document.

"No..."

David looked at him gravely.

"It appears Ryan has another person inside your family."

Ethan felt the room spin.

He had spent weeks believing the conspiracy ended with Vanessa and Michael.

Now he realized something far worse.

Ryan hadn't just infiltrated Nathan's business.

He had infiltrated the Carter family itself.

And if Olivia was involved...

May you like

Then no one close to Nathan could be trusted anymore.
