Chapter 4 – Following the Truth

Chapter 4 – Following the Truth
The text message haunted Vanessa for the rest of the day.
Your brother-in-law is asking questions.
She read it over and over before deleting it.
Then she deleted the conversation.
Then she emptied her phone's trash folder.
Still, she couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her.
For the first time since the lie began, she made a mistake.
She looked over her shoulder.
Twice.
Across town, Ethan Carter sat inside the office of David Mercer, a former homicide detective turned private investigator.
Mercer's office was simple.
No expensive furniture.
No flashy awards.
Just filing cabinets, a coffee maker, and a wall covered with photographs from old cases.
David listened without interrupting as Ethan explained everything.
"The pregnancy doesn't change."
"She avoids every doctor's appointment with Nathan."
"The ultrasound looks suspicious."
"And yesterday..."
Ethan hesitated.
"I think I saw her fake baby bump move."
David leaned back in his chair.
"You understand what you're asking me to investigate?"
"I do."
"If she's innocent, you'll damage your relationship with your brother forever."
"I know."
"And if she's guilty?"
Ethan looked out the window.
"Then Nathan deserves the truth before it's too late."
David nodded.
"I'll take the case."
The surveillance began the following Monday.
At exactly 8:12 a.m., Nathan left for work.
At 8:26, Vanessa walked out of the house carrying a large handbag.
She wore oversized sunglasses and a loose maternity sweater.
David followed from two cars behind.
She didn't drive toward the women's medical center.
She headed downtown.
Her first stop was a luxury shopping district.
David watched through his camera lens as Vanessa entered an upscale boutique.
Twenty minutes later she emerged carrying two shopping bags.
The store specialized in designer handbags.
Not baby clothes.
Not maternity supplies.
Nothing unusual.
Yet nothing related to pregnancy.
Her second stop raised even more questions.
Vanessa parked outside a private medical building.
David adjusted his binoculars.
The sign read:
Charlotte Women's Health Associates.
Finally.
A prenatal appointment.
He noted the time.
Vanessa entered through the front door.
Five minutes later...
She walked out the side exit.
She had never checked in.
Instead, she crossed the street and entered a nearby coffee shop.
David frowned.
She sat by the window.
Ordered an iced latte.
Opened her laptop.
And waited.
At exactly 10:03 a.m., a black Mercedes pulled into the parking lot.
A tall man stepped out.
Mid-thirties.
Expensive suit.
Confident walk.
He entered the café and sat across from Vanessa.
David lifted his camera.
Click.
Click.
Click.
The pair greeted each other with a warm embrace.
Not romantic.
But far more familiar than strangers.
They spoke quietly for nearly an hour.
Several times the man slid folders across the table.
Vanessa signed documents.
At one point, both of them laughed.
There was no sign of stress.
No concern for an unborn baby.
Only business.
David photographed everything.
When the meeting ended, the man handed Vanessa a thick envelope.
She placed it inside her handbag without opening it.
Then they left separately.
David followed the Mercedes.
Within twenty minutes, he identified the driver.
The vehicle was registered to...
Ryan Mitchell.
Occupation:
Marketing consultant.
No criminal record.
No connection to the Carter family.
At least...
None that appeared on paper.
That evening David met Ethan at a quiet diner.
He spread several photographs across the table.
Ethan studied them carefully.
"Who's the man?"
"I'm still digging."
"What about the doctor's appointment?"
David slid another photograph forward.
Vanessa leaving through the clinic's side entrance.
"She never saw a physician."
Ethan looked stunned.
"Are you sure?"
David nodded.
"I checked."
"The receptionist confirmed no patient named Vanessa Carter signed in."
Ethan slowly rubbed his forehead.
"So she's lying."
"About something."
David corrected him.
"We still don't know what."
Meanwhile, Nathan couldn't have been happier.
He arrived home carrying a tiny pair of blue sneakers.
Vanessa smiled.
"Already buying shoes?"
"They were too cute."
He knelt beside her.
"I wish I could go to one appointment."
She gently touched his face.
"I know."
"The doctor says everything is progressing perfectly."
Nathan smiled.
"I trust you."
For a brief moment...
Guilt flickered across Vanessa's face.
Then it disappeared.
Two days later, David followed Vanessa again.
This time she drove to a suburban hotel.
Not a luxury resort.
Not a motel.
A quiet business hotel.
She entered through a side entrance.
Room 418.
David waited.
Nearly two hours passed.
Finally, Ryan Mitchell emerged alone.
He looked around carefully before leaving.
Vanessa didn't exit until another fifteen minutes had passed.
She wore different clothes.
Her maternity sweater was gone.
Instead she carried the black garment bag Ethan had seen weeks earlier.
David photographed it.
Then called Ethan immediately.
"She just left the hotel."
"Was she alone?"
"Yes."
"What was she carrying?"
"The same garment bag."
Silence filled the line.
Then Ethan asked,
"Can you see what's inside?"
"Not yet."
That night, Ethan couldn't sleep.
Every piece of evidence pointed in one direction.
Fake appointments.
Secret meetings.
Hidden clothing.
Unknown cash payments.
But one question refused to leave his mind.
Why?
If Vanessa wanted money...
Why invent a pregnancy?
If she wanted to leave Nathan...
Why stay?
There had to be another reason.
A bigger reason.
The answer arrived sooner than expected.
The next afternoon, David called again.
"I know who Ryan Mitchell is."
Ethan immediately stood.
"Tell me."
"He used to work for Carter Construction."
Ethan frowned.
"My brother's company?"
"Yes."
"He was fired three years ago."
"For what?"
David's voice became serious.
"Financial fraud."
Ethan's blood ran cold.
"What else?"
"Ryan sued Nathan after he was fired."
"I remember."
"He lost."
David paused.
"But according to court records..."
"He publicly promised Nathan would regret humiliating him."
That evening, Nathan hosted a small dinner with several business clients.
Vanessa played the perfect wife.
She laughed at the right moments.
Accepted congratulations.
Placed Nathan's hand lovingly on her "baby bump."
One elderly investor smiled.
"You're a lucky man."
Nathan looked at Vanessa with complete sincerity.
"I know."
Standing near the dining room entrance, Ethan watched quietly.
He noticed Ryan Mitchell's name on one of the business contracts lying open on Nathan's desk.
Ryan had once tried to steal from Nathan's company.
Now he was secretly meeting Nathan's pregnant wife.
That was no coincidence.
As the dinner ended, Ethan slipped outside and called David.
"I don't think this is about a fake pregnancy anymore."
David answered immediately.
"What do you think it's about?"
Ethan looked back through the dining room window.
Nathan was smiling.
Completely unaware of the storm surrounding him.
Then Ethan said the words neither of them wanted to believe.
"I think someone is setting my brother up."
Across town, Vanessa entered the hotel parking garage once again.
Ryan was already waiting beside his Mercedes.
She handed him a folder.
He smiled after reading the first page.
"Perfect."
Nathan's forged signature looked flawless.
Ryan closed the folder and locked it inside his briefcase.
"We're almost ready."
Vanessa looked uneasy.
"And after that?"
Ryan's smile was cold.
"After that..."
"Nathan loses everything."
Vanessa stared at him.
For the first time...
May you like
She realized she might not be the one in control after all.
