Chapter 2 – A Baby That Never Changes

Chapter 2 – A Baby That Never Changes
Three weeks passed.
For Nathan Carter, they were the happiest weeks of his life.
Every morning, he kissed Vanessa's forehead before leaving for work.
Every evening, he returned with something for the baby.
Tiny socks.
A stuffed elephant.
A children's bedtime book.
He even downloaded an app that tracked fetal development.
"Today our baby is the size of a peach," he said one night with a grin.
Vanessa smiled warmly.
"Really?"
Nathan laughed.
"You should know. You're the one carrying him."
She looked away for just a moment.
"I guess I forgot."
Nathan thought nothing of it.
Love rarely questioned small mistakes.
Ethan, however, remembered everything.
His construction projects often brought him across the city, and occasionally he drove past Nathan's neighborhood.
One afternoon he stopped by unannounced with a toolbox.
"I figured I'd help install the nursery shelves."
Nathan welcomed him inside.
"Perfect timing."
The nursery looked beautiful.
Soft gray walls.
A white crib waiting to be assembled.
Boxes of baby clothes stacked neatly in one corner.
Nathan couldn't stop smiling.
"I never knew decorating a room could make someone this happy."
Ethan smiled back.
"I'm happy for you."
He meant it.
But as Vanessa walked into the room carrying lemonade, his eyes instinctively moved to her stomach.
She had announced the pregnancy nearly two months earlier.
Yet...
It looked exactly the same.
Not larger.
Not rounder.
Not even slightly different.
He said nothing.
Dinner that evening felt unusually tense.
Nathan talked excitedly about names.
"If it's a boy, maybe Daniel."
"And if it's a girl?" Vanessa asked.
"Emma."
Vanessa forced a smile.
"They're nice."
Nathan looked at Ethan.
"What do you think?"
"They're good names."
"You don't sound convinced."
Ethan shrugged.
"I'm just thinking."
Nathan laughed.
"You've been doing a lot of that lately."
Claire gently squeezed Ethan's hand beneath the table.
She knew exactly what he was thinking.
On the drive home, Claire finally asked,
"You're worried again."
Ethan nodded.
"I shouldn't be."
"But I am."
Claire sighed.
"Maybe every pregnancy is different."
"They are."
"So why are you so certain?"
Ethan stared through the windshield.
"Because pregnancies change."
Claire waited.
"So far..."
"I haven't seen anything change."
The following Monday, Nathan proudly invited his coworkers to lunch.
The conversation quickly turned to the baby.
One older foreman smiled.
"My wife couldn't stop eating oranges."
Another laughed.
"Mine wanted ice cream at two in the morning."
Nathan grinned.
"What about Vanessa?"
He stopped.
He couldn't think of a single craving she'd mentioned.
Not one.
He shrugged.
"Nothing unusual yet."
His coworkers smiled knowingly.
"Just wait."
Nathan laughed with them.
But a tiny seed of doubt had been planted.
That evening he surprised Vanessa with dinner.
Her favorite Italian restaurant.
As they waited for dessert, the waitress smiled.
"Congratulations."
Vanessa thanked her politely.
The waitress looked at Nathan.
"How far along?"
Nathan answered proudly.
"Almost four months."
The waitress looked at Vanessa's stomach.
A brief flicker of confusion crossed her face before she smiled again.
"Well..."
"Every mother is different."
Nathan noticed the hesitation.
Only for a second.
Then it disappeared.
Meanwhile, Ethan made a quiet decision.
He wasn't trying to prove Vanessa was lying.
He wanted to prove himself wrong.
He called an old college friend.
Dr. Melissa Grant.
An obstetrician.
After exchanging greetings, Ethan asked carefully,
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"If someone says she's almost four months pregnant..."
"What would you normally expect?"
Melissa laughed.
"You sound like you're interviewing me."
"I just need a general answer."
She became thoughtful.
"It depends on the woman."
"But by that stage..."
"There are usually visible changes."
"What kind?"
"The abdomen often begins to round."
"Weight distribution changes."
"Walking posture can shift."
"And many couples have already attended several prenatal appointments."
Ethan thanked her.
Then asked one final question.
"What if..."
"Nothing changes at all?"
Silence filled the phone.
Melissa answered slowly.
"I'd want to know why."
Days later, Nathan excitedly announced another doctor's visit.
"I'll take the afternoon off."
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
"No."
"I can handle it."
"I want to hear the heartbeat."
"The clinic is very busy."
"I don't mind waiting."
She smiled gently.
"I'll record it."
Nathan hesitated.
"Are you sure?"
She kissed him.
"I promise."
He agreed.
That afternoon, Ethan happened to be meeting a client only three blocks from the medical center Vanessa had mentioned.
As he walked toward his truck, he glanced across the street.
There was Vanessa.
She wasn't entering the women's health clinic.
She was walking past it.
She continued another block before entering a small café.
Ethan frowned.
He checked the time.
Her appointment had supposedly started five minutes earlier.
Curious, he remained where he was.
Thirty minutes passed.
Vanessa never entered the clinic.
Instead, she sat inside the café with a laptop.
Laughing.
Drinking coffee.
Completely relaxed.
Then she left.
Without ever seeing a doctor.
That night, Nathan rushed home.
"How did it go?"
Vanessa smiled.
"Everything is perfect."
She handed him a tiny recording.
A baby's heartbeat.
Nathan's eyes filled with tears.
"It's beautiful."
He hugged her tightly.
"I wish I'd been there."
She held him just a little too tightly.
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
Across town, Ethan listened to the same recording after Nathan proudly sent it to the family group chat.
Claire smiled.
"It sounds healthy."
Ethan replayed it.
Again.
And again.
Something bothered him.
The audio was too clean.
Too perfect.
Almost...
Studio quality.
Not like recordings he'd heard before.
His phone rang.
It was Nathan.
"Pretty amazing, huh?"
Ethan forced enthusiasm.
"It really is."
After hanging up, he searched online.
Within minutes, he found dozens of sample fetal heartbeat recordings.
One of them.
Sounded identical.
Word for word.
Beat for beat.
He stared at the screen.
"No..."
The next Saturday, the Carter family gathered again for lunch.
Nathan couldn't stop talking about the baby.
Vanessa laughed at all the right moments.
Answered every question.
Accepted every congratulations.
She looked convincing.
Almost flawless.
Almost.
As everyone moved toward the garden for dessert, Ethan noticed Vanessa adjusting her blouse.
For the briefest moment, she pressed both hands against her stomach.
Not like a pregnant woman protecting her baby.
Like someone repositioning something underneath her clothes.
When she noticed Ethan watching...
She immediately lowered her hands.
Their eyes met.
For the first time...
Vanessa didn't smile.
She looked afraid.
Only for a second.
Then the expression disappeared.
But Ethan had seen it.
And once seen...
It couldn't be forgotten.
That evening, he opened a notebook and wrote a single sentence.
The baby isn't changing. But Vanessa is becoming more nervous.
He closed the notebook.
He still had no proof.
Only questions.
But one thing had become impossible to ignore.
If Vanessa was telling the truth...
Why did every passing week seem frozen in time?
And why did she look more frightened each time someone mentioned the pregnancy?
Somewhere inside her carefully constructed lie...
The first crack had widened.
May you like
And Ethan had just become the first person to see it.
