Chapter 7 – The Hidden Partner

Chapter 7 – The Hidden Partner

David Mercer had seen enough conspiracies during his twenty-five years in law enforcement to recognize one when it was unfolding.

One liar could fake a pregnancy.

One scammer could forge a signature.

But stealing an entire company?

That required help from the inside.

He stared at the grainy security footage again.

Ryan Mitchell entered the bank at 2:17 p.m.

Exactly six seconds later, another man followed.

Dark suit.

Silver tie.

Black leather briefcase.

David knew the face immediately.

Michael Lawson.

Chief Financial Officer of Carter Construction.

Nathan's most trusted executive.

When Ethan arrived at David's office, the investigator had already covered an entire wall with photographs and timelines.

Ethan looked at Michael's picture.

"No."

David nodded grimly.

"I wish I were wrong."

"Michael has worked with Nathan for almost twelve years."

"I know."

"They're practically family."

David handed him another folder.

"Look closer."

Inside were copies of bank records obtained through legal investigative channels.

Large transfers.

Consulting payments.

Shell companies.

Most of them led back to one name.

Mitchell Strategic Consulting.

Ryan's company.

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

Michael had been receiving money for months.

"How much?"

David answered quietly.

"Over two million dollars."

Ethan looked stunned.

"For what?"

David tapped another document.

"That's what we're trying to find out."

Across town, Nathan sat inside the conference room with Michael.

The quarterly financial meeting had just ended.

Nathan smiled.

"Another profitable quarter."

Michael nodded.

"You've built an incredible company."

Nathan laughed.

"We built it."

Michael forced a smile.

"Right."

Nathan trusted him completely.

He had hired Michael fresh out of business school.

They had celebrated promotions together.

Attended each other's weddings.

Nathan had even made Michael the godfather of his nephew.

If there was one man Nathan believed would never betray him...

It was sitting directly across the table.

That evening, Ryan Mitchell met Michael in an underground parking garage.

Neither man stayed in their vehicles.

Ryan handed him a sealed envelope.

"Everything ready?"

Michael nodded.

"Nathan signs the acquisition agreement next week."

"And after that?"

"The company belongs to us."

Ryan smiled.

"What about Ethan?"

Michael shrugged.

"He suspects Vanessa."

"Not me."

Ryan laughed.

"Good."

"Keep it that way."

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in the Carter home.

She hadn't eaten all day.

Nathan noticed.

"You're not feeling well."

"I'm tired."

He gently touched her shoulder.

"Should I call your doctor?"

"No."

She answered too quickly.

"I'm fine."

Nathan frowned.

"You've seemed different lately."

She looked away.

"Just hormones."

Nathan smiled sympathetically.

"I've read that's normal."

He wrapped an arm around her.

"We're a team."

"No matter what."

Vanessa nearly broke down.

If only he knew.

The next morning, David made another breakthrough.

He discovered Ryan and Michael had incorporated three companies within the past eighteen months.

Each had different names.

Different addresses.

Different owners.

But every company shared one detail.

The same accountant.

David smiled.

"Found you."

The accountant's name was Linda Pierce.

She owned a small bookkeeping office forty miles outside Charlotte.

David and Ethan drove there immediately.

The office looked ordinary.

Two desks.

A coffee machine.

Family photographs on the walls.

Linda welcomed them politely.

"I'm sorry."

"I can't discuss clients."

David showed his investigator's license.

"We're investigating financial fraud."

Linda's expression changed.

"I've done nothing wrong."

"We're not saying you have."

David replied calmly.

"We only need to understand these companies."

He placed the documents on her desk.

Linda's hands began shaking.

"I knew something wasn't right."

Ethan leaned forward.

"What do you mean?"

She closed her eyes.

"Ryan paid me in cash."

"He told me the companies were temporary investment vehicles."

"When I asked questions..."

"He threatened my business."

David exchanged a quick glance with Ethan.

"Did you ever meet Michael Lawson?"

Linda nodded slowly.

"Many times."

"He signed most of the paperwork."

Ethan felt another piece fall into place.

Nathan's trusted CFO hadn't merely accepted bribes.

He had helped build the scheme.

Linda reached into a locked drawer.

"I kept copies."

David looked surprised.

"Copies of what?"

"Everything."

She handed him a thick folder.

Corporate registrations.

Email printouts.

Wire transfers.

Meeting schedules.

At the very bottom lay one handwritten page.

Ryan's own instructions.

One sentence had been circled in red ink.

The pregnancy keeps Nathan distracted. Michael handles the company.

Ethan stared at the page in disbelief.

There it was.

The truth.

Vanessa had never been the mastermind.

She had been the distraction.

While Nathan focused on becoming a father...

Someone else had been quietly stealing his future.

That afternoon, Nathan called Ethan.

"Are you free tonight?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Why?"

"I want your opinion."

"About what?"

Nathan laughed.

"I'm thinking about making Michael a partner."

Ethan's face went pale.

"When?"

"Tomorrow."

"He deserves it."

Ethan struggled to keep his voice steady.

"Don't sign anything yet."

Nathan frowned.

"Why not?"

"I just..."

Ethan searched for an excuse.

"...think you should let a lawyer review it first."

Nathan chuckled.

"You've become cautious lately."

"Maybe."

"But promise me."

Nathan smiled.

"Fine."

"I promise."

Late that evening, Michael entered Nathan's office after everyone else had gone home.

Using the master access card Nathan had given him years earlier, he unlocked the executive filing cabinet.

Inside sat the original ownership certificates.

He carefully photographed every page.

Then replaced everything exactly as he had found it.

As he turned to leave, he froze.

Nathan's office door was open.

A cleaning employee stood in the hallway.

An elderly janitor named Samuel.

They looked at each other for only a second.

Michael smiled.

"Working late?"

Samuel nodded.

"As always."

Michael walked away calmly.

But Samuel quietly watched him disappear.

He had cleaned that office for sixteen years.

And he knew one thing.

Michael had never worked that late before.

The following morning, Samuel approached Ethan in the company parking lot.

"I need to tell you something."

Ethan recognized the old janitor immediately.

"What is it?"

Samuel looked around carefully before speaking.

"I saw Mr. Lawson inside your brother's office last night."

"So?"

"He wasn't working."

"He was taking pictures."

Ethan's heartbeat quickened.

"Are you certain?"

Samuel nodded.

"I may be old."

"But I still know the difference between paperwork..."

"...and theft."

Across town, Ryan received Michael's encrypted message.

Mission complete.

Ryan smiled as he poured himself another drink.

Everything was moving exactly according to plan.

Nathan trusted Michael.

Vanessa distracted Nathan.

The forged documents were ready.

Within days, Carter Construction would belong to them.

Ryan leaned back confidently.

He believed no one could stop him now.

He never imagined that the smallest crack in his perfect plan...

May you like

Would come from an elderly janitor carrying nothing more than a mop and an honest conscience.
