Chapter 5 – The Fake Ultrasound

Chapter 5 – The Fake Ultrasound

Nathan Carter had framed the ultrasound picture.

It sat in the center of the living room, surrounded by smiling family photographs.

Every guest who entered the house noticed it.

Every guest congratulated the future parents.

Nathan looked at it every morning before leaving for work.

Every night before going to bed.

To him, it wasn't just a blurry black-and-white image.

It was the first picture of his child.

He had no idea it was also the centerpiece of Vanessa's greatest lie.

Ethan couldn't stop thinking about the forged heartbeat recording.

Now there was the suspicious ultrasound.

If the heartbeat had been copied...

Could the ultrasound have been fake too?

He knew only one person he trusted with that question.

Dr. Melissa Grant.

Melissa carefully examined the printed ultrasound inside her office.

She didn't know Nathan or Vanessa personally.

Ethan had only asked her for a professional opinion.

She studied the image for nearly a minute.

Then frowned.

"Where did this come from?"

"My brother."

"He says it's his baby's first ultrasound."

Melissa looked closer.

Something immediately bothered her.

"There should be identifying information here."

She pointed toward the top of the image.

"Patient name."

"Date."

"Medical record number."

"Clinic identification."

Ethan looked confused.

"They're missing."

"They've been cropped off."

Melissa adjusted the light above her desk.

"And that's unusual."

She opened one of her medical textbooks and compared several real ultrasound images.

"See the difference?"

Ethan nodded slowly.

Every authentic scan contained timestamps, measurements, and hospital information.

Nathan's photograph showed none of those details.

Only the baby.

Almost as if someone had intentionally removed everything else.

Melissa became more serious.

"I can't say it's fake."

"But I can say it isn't a complete medical image."

That evening Ethan drove home in silence.

Claire noticed immediately.

"Bad news?"

He handed her the photograph.

"The ultrasound has been edited."

Claire's expression changed.

"You mean..."

"I don't know yet."

"But someone wanted to hide where it came from."

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone inside a private room at the Lexington Suites Hotel.

Ryan Mitchell spread several documents across the table.

"Our timing has to be perfect."

Vanessa looked nervous.

"Ethan is watching me."

Ryan barely looked up.

"He doesn't have proof."

"He keeps asking questions."

Ryan smiled.

"Questions don't matter."

"Evidence does."

He handed her another envelope.

Inside was a new ultrasound image.

"This one is even better."

Vanessa stared at it.

"Where did you get it?"

Ryan's smile disappeared.

"You don't need to know."

The next morning Nathan surprised Vanessa with breakfast in bed.

"I made pancakes."

She laughed.

"You burned them."

"A little."

He reached into his pocket.

"I have another surprise."

He handed her two tickets.

"A weekend trip."

"Just us."

"Before the baby comes."

For a brief moment, Vanessa almost cried.

Not because she was happy.

Because Nathan genuinely loved her.

And every act of kindness made the deception harder to carry.

Later that afternoon, David Mercer called Ethan.

"I found something."

"What?"

"I've identified the clinic on the original ultrasound."

Ethan's heartbeat quickened.

"How?"

"I enlarged the image."

"There was a tiny reflection inside the corner."

"A clinic logo."

"It matched a fertility center in Raleigh."

Ethan immediately grabbed his keys.

"I'm coming."

David spread enlarged photographs across his office desk.

The original print.

Digital enhancements.

Magnified corners.

There, barely visible beneath the cropped edge, appeared three faded letters.

RMC

"I searched every women's clinic."

David tapped another folder.

"Only one uses that exact logo."

Raleigh Medical Center.

Ethan frowned.

"But Nathan and Vanessa have never lived there."

"Exactly."

Melissa agreed to help once more.

Using her professional credentials, she contacted a colleague at Raleigh Medical Center.

Not asking for confidential patient records.

Only asking whether the formatting looked familiar.

Her colleague answered within hours.

"It absolutely does."

"And..."

She hesitated.

"I've seen that image before."

Melissa stared.

"What?"

"It was part of a medical presentation nearly three years ago."

Silence.

"Are you certain?"

"I am."

"It belonged to another patient."

Ethan felt the room spinning.

Three years.

Nathan had met Vanessa only eighteen months ago.

The image couldn't possibly belong to their child.

It wasn't merely edited.

It had been stolen.

That evening Nathan returned home carrying fresh flowers.

Vanessa greeted him with a warm embrace.

"I have something for you."

She handed him another ultrasound.

"This was today's scan."

Nathan smiled.

"Our baby is getting bigger."

He carefully placed the new photograph beside the old one.

Neither he nor Vanessa noticed Ethan's truck parked quietly across the street.

Through binoculars, David photographed the second ultrasound as Nathan proudly held it against the living room window.

Back at David's office, both images were scanned into his computer.

He overlaid them.

The measurements were different.

The dates were different.

But the baby's position...

Was identical.

Every shadow.

Every outline.

Every tiny detail matched perfectly.

Ryan had simply altered the labels.

David whispered,

"No..."

He zoomed in again.

Then printed both images.

Side by side.

There was no doubt.

They were the same ultrasound.

One had merely been digitally modified.

The following morning Ethan met David before sunrise.

David slid the comparison across the table.

"I've worked fraud cases for twenty years."

"I've never seen anyone fake a pregnancy this carefully."

Ethan stared at the evidence.

His hands trembled.

"This is enough."

David shook his head.

"No."

"It's enough to confront."

"Not enough to convince Nathan."

Ethan looked up.

"What do you mean?"

"Your brother loves her."

"He'll believe her before he'll believe us."

As if proving David's point, Nathan called Ethan that afternoon.

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"The doctor says we might learn the baby's gender next month."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I'm happy for you."

"You don't sound excited."

"I'm just busy."

Nathan laughed.

"When this little one arrives..."

"You're going to be the best uncle."

After the call ended, Ethan remained sitting in his truck.

He wanted to tell Nathan everything.

He wanted to drive straight to his brother's house.

To show him the fake ultrasounds.

The false heartbeat.

The secret meetings.

But without undeniable proof...

Nathan would only see one thing.

A brother trying to destroy his marriage.

That evening, Vanessa entered the guest bathroom and locked the door.

She removed the prosthetic baby bump and placed it on the counter.

Then she unfolded Ryan's newest instructions.

At the bottom of the page, one sentence had been underlined twice.

It's time to make Nathan believe the baby is in danger.

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

She had agreed to fake a pregnancy.

She had agreed to deceive Nathan.

But this...

This meant taking the lie even further.

Her phone buzzed.

Another message from Ryan.

Once he thinks he might lose the baby, he'll sign anything.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Outside the bathroom, Nathan happily assembled a baby stroller while humming to himself.

Inside...

Vanessa quietly began to cry.

For the first time since the deception began...

She wasn't afraid of Ethan.

She was afraid of the man who had created the lie.

Because she was beginning to realize something terrifying.

She was no longer his partner.

May you like

She was his next victim.
