Chapter 6 – The Web of Lies

Chapter 6 – The Web of Lies

Vanessa barely slept.

Ryan's final text message echoed in her mind.

Once he believes the baby is in danger, he'll sign anything.

She stared at the ceiling until sunrise.

For the first time, she questioned how far she was willing to go.

She had told herself the lie was temporary.

That no one would truly get hurt.

That Nathan would recover after everything was over.

Now she realized she had never been in control.

Ryan had been planning something much bigger from the beginning.

Nathan woke before dawn.

He quietly slipped out of bed and headed downstairs.

Vanessa watched from the bedroom door.

He was making breakfast again.

Burned toast.

Overcooked eggs.

Coffee that smelled stronger than usual.

When she entered the kitchen, he smiled like a little boy.

"I have another surprise."

She forced a smile.

"What is it?"

He handed her an envelope.

Inside were reservations.

A prenatal couples' retreat at a luxury wellness resort.

"Three days."

"Prenatal classes."

"Nutrition workshops."

"Parenting seminars."

Nathan beamed.

"We'll finally get to do all this together."

Vanessa's heart nearly stopped.

She couldn't go.

Every doctor there would expose her.

She quickly found an excuse.

"My doctor doesn't want me traveling."

Nathan looked disappointed.

"Oh..."

"But if that's what's safest."

She hugged him tightly.

"I'm sorry."

He kissed her forehead.

"Don't apologize."

"Our baby comes first."

The words cut deeper than any accusation ever could.

Across town, David Mercer continued following the money.

He no longer believed the fake pregnancy was the real objective.

It was only the bait.

The real crime was still hidden.

Inside his office, stacks of financial records covered his desk.

Nathan's company accounts.

Property records.

Corporate filings.

Insurance policies.

Then something unusual appeared.

Three weeks after Vanessa announced the pregnancy...

Nathan had added her as the primary beneficiary on every major insurance policy.

Life insurance.

Business insurance.

Retirement accounts.

Nearly everything.

David quietly muttered,

"That's why."

He immediately called Ethan.

"You need to see this."

Within thirty minutes, Ethan arrived.

David slid several documents across the desk.

"Look at the dates."

Ethan compared them carefully.

Pregnancy announcement.

Insurance updates.

Revised will.

Emergency medical authorization.

Power of attorney.

Everything had changed within days.

Nathan had trusted Vanessa completely.

David tapped one document.

"If something happened to Nathan tomorrow..."

"She controls almost everything."

Ethan felt a chill run down his spine.

"This was never about a baby."

"No."

David answered quietly.

"It was always about control."

Meanwhile, Vanessa met Ryan inside the same hotel suite.

He poured himself a glass of expensive whiskey.

"You look nervous."

"I don't want to keep lying."

Ryan laughed.

"You stopped telling the truth months ago."

"This has gone too far."

"No."

He smiled coldly.

"We're almost finished."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"What exactly are you planning?"

Ryan opened a folder.

Inside were several contracts.

Nathan's signature appeared at the bottom of every page.

Except...

The signatures were forged.

Vanessa stared.

"You forged these?"

Ryan looked amused.

"No."

"You did."

Her face turned pale.

"I never—"

"You signed blank pages."

"Remember?"

Her knees weakened.

Months earlier, Ryan had convinced her to sign "practice documents" while helping organize Nathan's business files.

She had never questioned it.

Now those signatures had become legal weapons.

"You said they were harmless."

Ryan smiled.

"They were."

"Until I filled in the rest."

Vanessa stepped backward.

"You used me."

"I used opportunity."

"You promised nobody would get hurt."

Ryan leaned forward.

"I lied."

David's investigation uncovered another piece of the puzzle.

Vanessa had visited no fewer than four different maternity boutiques.

Not to buy clothes.

To rent them.

Each outfit had been returned within days.

Different sizes.

Different styles.

Always matching whatever stage of pregnancy she claimed to be in.

Then came another discovery.

She had purchased silicone body adhesive.

Medical-grade makeup.

Artificial stretch-mark cosmetics.

And a custom-made pregnancy prosthetic from the costume shop Ethan had visited.

Every purchase had been paid for in cash.

Every receipt had disappeared.

Except one.

A careless employee had scanned a loyalty membership card.

The name on the account wasn't Vanessa Carter.

It was...

Ryan Mitchell.

That evening Ethan spread every piece of evidence across his dining room table.

Photographs.

Receipts.

Financial statements.

Rental invoices.

The fake heartbeat recording.

The altered ultrasounds.

Claire stared in disbelief.

"This isn't one lie."

"No."

Ethan replied.

"It's dozens."

She looked toward the growing stack.

"Maybe hundreds."

Every deception supported another.

Every lie protected the next.

It wasn't a fake pregnancy anymore.

It was an entire manufactured life.

Nathan remained completely unaware.

He spent Saturday building a swing in the backyard.

"I want our child to grow up here."

He smiled proudly as Vanessa watched from the porch.

"Imagine teaching them to ride a bike."

She nodded silently.

"Or catching fireflies."

Nathan laughed.

"My dad used to do that with us."

He looked at her.

"I can't wait."

Vanessa forced another smile.

Then turned away before he saw the tears filling her eyes.

Late that night, she unlocked the guest-room closet.

The black garment bag hung exactly where she had left it.

Inside was the silicone pregnancy bump.

The fake medical records.

Rental receipts.

Disposable adhesive strips.

Everything that could destroy her.

She reached for the zipper.

Maybe she should throw it all away.

Confess.

Tell Nathan everything before Ryan ruined both of their lives.

Just as she picked up the bag...

Her phone rang.

Ryan.

She hesitated before answering.

"I've been thinking," she whispered.

"You don't need to think."

His voice was calm.

"You need to follow instructions."

"I want out."

Silence.

Then Ryan spoke again.

"Walk downstairs."

Vanessa frowned.

"What?"

"Go to your living room window."

Her heartbeat accelerated.

She slowly pulled back the curtain.

Across the street sat a black SUV.

Its headlights were off.

Inside, two men watched the house.

Ryan's voice remained steady.

"I told you."

"We're partners."

"You don't leave partnerships."

Vanessa's hands trembled.

"Who are they?"

"Insurance."

"For my investment."

Tears rolled down her face.

"You'd hurt Nathan?"

Ryan laughed softly.

"If necessary."

"And if you tell anyone the truth..."

His voice became ice.

"...I'll make sure the next funeral isn't fake."

The call ended.

Vanessa collapsed onto the floor.

For months, she had believed she was helping execute the perfect scam.

Now she understood the truth.

She wasn't Ryan's accomplice.

She was his prisoner.

At that same moment, David Mercer reviewed security footage from a bank across town.

One frame caught his attention.

Ryan wasn't alone.

A second man entered the bank with him.

David enlarged the image.

His expression hardened.

He recognized the face immediately.

The man wasn't just a former employee.

He was Nathan's current chief financial officer.

David grabbed his phone and called Ethan.

"We've got a bigger problem."

Ethan answered instantly.

"What happened?"

David took a deep breath.

"Ryan has someone inside your brother's company."

"And if I'm right..."

May you like

"This fake pregnancy is only the first step in stealing everything Nathan owns."
