Chapter 3 – The Safety Pin

Chapter 3 – The Safety Pin
By the time Vanessa claimed she was entering her fifth month of pregnancy, Nathan had stopped counting the weeks.
He was counting dreams instead.
Every spare moment was spent preparing for fatherhood.
He assembled the crib himself.
He painted tiny clouds across the nursery ceiling after watching online tutorials.
He argued with furniture stores over the safest rocking chair.
And every night before bed, he knelt beside Vanessa, resting a gentle hand on her stomach.
"Can you feel our baby moving yet?" he would ask.
Vanessa always smiled.
"Not much."
"When you do, you'll be the first to know."
Nathan kissed her forehead.
"I can't wait."
She waited until he fell asleep before silently removing the rounded prosthetic from beneath her maternity blouse and placing it inside the black garment bag hidden beneath the guest-room bed.
The lie had become part of her nightly routine.
Ethan watched everything from a distance.
Not because he wanted to expose Vanessa.
Because he wanted one undeniable answer.
He had spent weeks doubting himself.
Maybe she simply carried differently.
Maybe the doctor had advised bed rest.
Maybe every strange detail had an innocent explanation.
But every explanation collapsed under the weight of one simple fact.
Nothing changed.
Not her posture.
Not her walk.
Not the shape of her stomach.
Not even the size of the bump Nathan proudly photographed every Sunday.
It was as though time had stopped.
Claire noticed Ethan studying the photographs spread across the dining table.
"What are you doing?"
He pointed at the pictures.
"These were taken over six weeks."
She leaned closer.
The dresses were different.
The hairstyles changed.
The weather shifted from cool spring mornings to warm afternoons.
Only one thing remained exactly the same.
Vanessa's stomach.
Claire frowned.
"I didn't notice."
"Neither did anyone else."
He laid the photographs side by side.
"If someone covered the dates, you couldn't tell which was newer."
Claire looked uneasy.
"What if you're right?"
Ethan answered quietly.
"Then Nathan's entire future is built on a lie."
The Carter family reunion arrived the following weekend.
Nathan insisted on hosting it.
"It's our first celebration as future parents."
The backyard filled with relatives, neighbors, and close friends.
Children chased each other across the lawn.
Music played softly beneath strings of lights.
Vanessa wore a flowing cream-colored maternity dress.
Everyone complimented how radiant she looked.
Nathan couldn't take his eyes off her.
He believed he was looking at the mother of his child.
During lunch, Aunt Rebecca laughed.
"Come here, Vanessa."
"We need a proper pregnancy photo."
Everyone gathered around.
Nathan slipped an arm around Vanessa.
Flash.
Another picture.
Flash.
More laughter.
Ethan stood several feet away, watching quietly.
Still searching for the one detail everyone else missed.
As dessert was served, Nathan's young niece Lily ran across the patio chasing a balloon.
She tripped.
Her tiny dress caught on the decorative table centerpiece.
The metal centerpiece tipped over.
A small silver safety pin, used to secure one of the decorative ribbons, bounced across the table.
Without thinking, Vanessa reached to catch it before it fell.
The pin snagged the side of her dress.
A tiny ripping sound echoed.
It lasted less than a second.
But Ethan heard it.
So did Claire.
Vanessa froze.
For the briefest instant, something beneath her dress shifted unnaturally.
The rounded shape slipped slightly to one side before Vanessa quickly pressed both hands against her stomach.
Too quickly.
Too deliberately.
Nathan noticed nothing.
He was comforting Lily.
Everyone else focused on the frightened child.
Everyone...
Except Ethan.
Vanessa excused herself almost immediately.
"I'll be right back."
She hurried toward the downstairs bathroom.
Her pace was faster than Ethan had ever seen.
Almost panicked.
Claire quietly touched Ethan's arm.
"You saw it."
He nodded once.
"I did."
"What was it?"
"I don't know."
"But pregnant bellies don't move like that."
Ten minutes passed.
Then fifteen.
Nathan knocked gently on the bathroom door.
"Honey?"
"You okay?"
Vanessa answered through the door.
"My zipper tore."
"I'm fixing it."
Nathan laughed softly.
"Take your time."
He returned to the guests.
Ethan remained where he was.
Watching the closed door.
Listening.
He heard something strange.
Not crying.
Not fabric tearing.
Velcro.
A long, unmistakable ripping sound.
When Vanessa finally emerged, her dress looked perfect again.
She smiled naturally.
Almost too naturally.
"I'm so sorry."
"Everything okay?" Nathan asked.
She nodded.
"Just a wardrobe malfunction."
Nathan kissed her cheek.
"I'm just glad you're alright."
Ethan noticed something else.
The baby bump was now slightly higher than before.
Less than an inch.
Almost impossible to detect.
Almost.
That evening, after the guests left, Claire spoke first.
"You heard the Velcro."
"I did."
"And the bump changed."
"It did."
She stared at him.
"What are you going to do?"
Ethan sighed.
"Nothing."
Claire looked surprised.
"Nothing?"
"Not until I have proof."
"If I'm wrong..."
"I destroy my brother's marriage."
"If I'm right..."
"I save his life."
The next morning, Ethan drove back to the event rental district where he had seen Vanessa weeks earlier.
This time, he entered the costume boutique.
A cheerful employee greeted him.
"Can I help you?"
"I'm looking for a stage costume."
"What kind?"
He hesitated.
Then pointed toward a display mannequin.
It wore a realistic pregnancy prosthetic beneath a fitted dress.
His heartbeat quickened.
The employee smiled.
"Those are very popular with theater companies."
Ethan walked closer.
The silicone bump looked astonishingly lifelike.
He gently pressed it.
Soft.
Flexible.
Attached by adjustable straps and wide Velcro fasteners.
His pulse raced.
"May I see it?"
The employee handed it over.
As Ethan adjusted the straps, he heard it.
The exact same sound.
Rrrrip.
Velcro.
Identical to the sound outside Nathan's bathroom.
His hands slowly tightened around the prosthetic.
"Has anyone rented one recently?"
The employee checked the computer.
"I'm sorry."
"We can't share customer information."
Ethan nodded politely.
"I understand."
He thanked her and walked outside.
Sitting inside his truck, he stared through the windshield for several minutes.
The evidence was still circumstantial.
But now the impossible had become possible.
That afternoon, Ethan called the private investigator recommended by an old colleague.
The man answered on the second ring.
"David Mercer."
"My name is Ethan Carter."
"I need your help."
"What kind of help?"
Ethan looked at the photograph of Nathan and Vanessa smiling beside the nursery.
Then quietly said,
"I need to know whether my sister-in-law is really pregnant."
Across town, Vanessa entered the guest bedroom after Nathan left for work.
She locked the door.
Opened the black garment bag.
And carefully examined the prosthetic.
The tiny tear caused by the safety pin had been repaired.
Barely visible.
She exhaled in relief.
Then her phone vibrated.
A text message appeared from an unknown number.
Your brother-in-law is asking questions.
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Another message followed.
Be careful. He's closer than you think.
For the first time since the deception began...
Fear outweighed confidence.
She looked at her reflection in the mirror.
The fake baby bump appeared flawless.
But she knew something had changed.
Not the pregnancy.
The investigation.
And somewhere outside her carefully built illusion...
May you like
Someone had finally started pulling on the first loose thread.
