CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Who Refused to Die

CHAPTER 1 — The Woman Who Refused to Die

The poison burned like liquid fire.

Every breath scraped against Evelyn Carter's lungs as if broken glass had been poured into her chest. The polished hardwood beneath her cheek felt strangely cold, yet sweat soaked through her silk blouse.

Across the room, laughter echoed.

Not nervous laughter.

Not shocked laughter.

Victorious laughter.

Daniel Ashford looked down at his wife with an expression she had never seen before.

Or perhaps...

She had simply refused to see it.

For ten years she had called him her husband.

For ten years she had believed every gentle smile, every promise, every apology after another late business meeting.

She had defended him when friends questioned his intentions.

She had ignored every warning because love had made excuses where reason should have asked questions.

Now she finally understood.

He had never loved her.

He had loved what belonged to her.

"My heart..."

Her voice barely escaped her lips.

Daniel crouched beside her, his expensive Italian shoes stopping inches from her trembling fingers.

"You always were stubborn."

His tone was calm.

Almost affectionate.

"You should have signed the transfer papers yesterday."

Evelyn struggled to focus.

Transfer papers.

The controlling shares of Carter Biotech.

The family trust.

The offshore accounts.

Everything her late father had left in her name.

She had refused.

That refusal had become today's death sentence.

Standing beside Daniel, Vanessa Reed slowly swirled red wine inside a crystal glass.

She wore Evelyn's favorite emerald necklace.

The one Daniel had claimed was being repaired.

"I told you she'd never agree willingly."

Vanessa smiled.

"So this became... necessary."

Evelyn stared at her.

"You..."

Vanessa laughed.

"Oh, don't look so surprised."

"I've been living in your guest house for almost two years."

"You simply never noticed."

Every sentence struck harder than the poison.

Two years.

While Evelyn attended charity events.

While she believed Vanessa was only Daniel's business consultant.

While she trusted them both.

Daniel reached into his pocket.

He removed a folder.

The unsigned transfer agreement.

"You still have time."

He placed a pen beside her hand.

"Sign."

Evelyn tried to lift her arm.

Instead, another wave of agony swept through her body.

Blood appeared at the corner of her mouth.

Daniel sighed.

"Such a waste."

Vanessa looked toward the empty wheelchair near the fireplace.

"I almost feel bad."

Daniel chuckled.

"No, you don't."

"No."

She smiled wider.

"I really don't."

Evelyn followed Vanessa's gaze.

The wheelchair.

It had belonged to her mother.

After the accident fifteen years ago.

The accident that had taken both of her parents.

At least...

That was what she had always believed.

Something flashed inside her memory.

The day of the funeral.

A woman dressed entirely in white standing far away beneath the rain.

Watching.

Never approaching.

Her father had once whispered a sentence she never understood.

"If anything ever happens to me... trust the white rose."

She had been sixteen.

She thought grief had made him speak nonsense.

Now...

For the first time in fifteen years...

Those words returned with frightening clarity.

Daniel snapped his fingers in front of her face.

"Stay with us."

"I need your fingerprint after you sign."

Evelyn's vision blurred.

No.

She couldn't die.

Not yet.

Not before knowing why.

Not before discovering what really happened to her parents.

Not before making these two monsters answer for everything.

Her left hand searched desperately across the floor.

The marble coffee table.

Broken glass.

The edge of the Persian rug.

Then...

Metal.

A tiny steel button hidden beneath the hardwood floor.

Her father had installed it years ago.

A silent emergency transmitter connected to Carter Global's private security network.

She had laughed when he showed it to her.

"No one has secret panic buttons in their living room."

Her father smiled.

"The people with enemies do."

She had forgotten it.

Until now.

Her trembling finger pressed down.

Nothing happened.

Daniel laughed.

"You still believe someone is coming?"

He stood.

"No one even knows you're here."

Then...

A vibration echoed beneath the floor.

Soft.

Almost impossible to hear.

Daniel frowned.

"What was that?"

Before Evelyn could answer, her phone lit up on the coffee table.

One notification.

Then another.

Then dozens.

SYSTEM ALERT

EXECUTIVE EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED

Daniel grabbed the phone.

His confident smile slowly disappeared.

"What..."

He refreshed the screen.

Another alert.

PRIMARY SHAREHOLDER STATUS VERIFIED

ALL CORPORATE ASSETS FROZEN

His own phone rang.

Then Vanessa's.

Then the landline.

Daniel answered immediately.

"What is happening?"

Silence.

Then a frightened voice exploded through the speaker.

"Mr. Ashford!"

"Our banking access is gone!"

"The board members can't authorize anything!"

"The holding companies are frozen!"

"What did you do?"

Daniel's face turned white.

"I didn't—"

Another call interrupted.

Then another.

Vanessa snatched her own phone.

"What do you mean the Securities Commission is outside headquarters?"

She looked at Daniel.

"They're executing emergency warrants."

"Impossible."

He shook his head.

"I control the company."

A computerized voice interrupted from Evelyn's phone.

IDENTITY OF EMERGENCY ACTIVATOR CONFIRMED.

FOUNDING FAMILY PROTOCOL RESTORED.

Daniel stared.

"No..."

His breathing became uneven.

"No."

The mansion suddenly shook.

Not from an earthquake.

From engines.

Heavy engines.

Headlights swept through the enormous windows.

Black armored vehicles surrounded the estate.

One after another.

Vanessa backed away.

"What is this?"

Daniel rushed toward the front entrance.

Before he reached it—

The massive oak doors exploded inward.

Armed tactical officers flooded the foyer with disciplined precision.

Within seconds, every exit was secured.

Every weapon was drawn.

Every servant in the mansion stood frozen.

Behind them...

A woman stepped inside.

White tailored suit.

Black gloves.

Dark sunglasses.

Silver hair pulled into a flawless knot.

She carried herself like someone who had spent decades giving orders that were never questioned.

Every officer instinctively moved aside for her.

She removed her sunglasses.

Her sharp gray eyes settled on Daniel.

Recognition struck him instantly.

His knees nearly gave out.

"No..."

He whispered.

"That's impossible."

The woman smiled.

Not warmly.

Coldly.

"I've been waiting fifteen years for this day."

Daniel stumbled backward.

"No!"

"You're dead!"

"I watched the car go over the cliff!"

The woman walked closer.

"So did I."

The room fell silent.

She stopped beside Evelyn and slowly knelt.

Gentle fingers brushed damp hair away from Evelyn's face.

For the first time since the poison entered her body...

Evelyn felt safe.

The stranger's voice softened.

"Hold on."

"The antidote is already here."

Evelyn stared into those familiar gray eyes.

A memory surfaced.

Rain.

White roses.

A lullaby only one person used to sing.

Her lips trembled.

"...Aunt..."

The woman's expression finally broke.

A tear escaped despite fifteen years of discipline.

"Yes."

She squeezed Evelyn's hand.

"I'm finally home."

Behind them, Daniel screamed as officers forced him to the floor.

"No!"

"You don't understand!"

"I had no choice!"

The woman slowly stood.

Her face became unreadable once again.

She looked down at the man who had stolen her family's empire.

Then she spoke the words she had rehearsed for fifteen years.

"You murdered my brother."

"You stole my niece's life."

"You poisoned the last heir of the Carter family."

A long pause.

"And today..."

Her eyes hardened like ice.

"I'm taking everything back."

Outside, sirens echoed across the estate.

Inside, Evelyn's heartbeat weakened.

A medic rushed forward carrying a silver emergency case.

The older woman never released Evelyn's hand.

"Stay with me."

"You've survived ten years of lies."

"You can survive one more hour."

But as the antidote was prepared, the lead physician suddenly looked up.

His expression changed.

"Ma'am..."

He swallowed.

"The poison in her bloodstream..."

"It isn't the one we expected."

The room went completely silent.

Because someone else...

Someone they had not yet discovered...

May you like

Had changed the poison.

And that meant Daniel Ashford was not the only traitor inside the mansion.
