CHAPTER 7 — The Woman in the White Suit

CHAPTER 7 — The Woman in the White Suit
The morgue was colder than Evelyn expected.
Not because of the temperature.
Because every answer seemed to arrive beside another impossible question.
The stainless-steel drawer slid open with a metallic scrape.
A white sheet covered the body.
No one spoke.
Dr. Samuel Reeves looked toward Amelia.
"Are you ready?"
Amelia gave a slow nod.
The sheet was folded back.
Evelyn instinctively held her breath.
The woman's face was peaceful, almost as though she were sleeping. Silver strands framed delicate features that time had softened but never erased.
Evelyn's knees weakened.
She had never met this woman.
Yet tears filled her eyes without warning.
Somewhere deep inside her, a memory stirred.
Not a face.
Not a name.
A scent.
Lavender.
Warm hands brushing through her hair.
A lullaby sung in a language she had not heard since childhood.
"Why..." Evelyn whispered, "...does she feel familiar?"
Dr. Reeves remained silent.
Amelia slowly reached toward the woman's left hand.
There, beneath a faded scar, was a tiny white rose tattoo.
Amelia closed her eyes.
"No..."
Her voice broke for the first time in years.
"It's really her."
Evelyn turned.
"You know her?"
Amelia nodded.
"I prayed every day that I was wrong."
She looked at the lifeless woman.
"This is Eleanor."
"My older sister."
Evelyn frowned.
"My mother's name was Katherine."
Amelia looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
"That's the name they gave the woman who raised you."
The room seemed to stop.
"What?"
"You never knew your real mother."
Thirty years earlier...
The Carter family had been larger.
Richard.
Amelia.
Eleanor.
Three siblings.
Three heirs.
Richard inherited the business.
Amelia entered military intelligence.
Eleanor disappeared.
Officially, she had chosen a quiet life abroad.
Unofficially...
She had been protecting something far more valuable than money.
She had been protecting her daughters.
Back in the present...
"Daughters?" Evelyn repeated.
Amelia lowered her gaze.
"You."
"And Olivia."
The name echoed through the room.
Olivia.
The sister Evelyn had never known existed.
The child from the old photograph.
"Where is she?"
Amelia hesitated.
"I don't know."
"Nobody does."
"She vanished the same night your family was attacked."
Outside the morgue...
Agent Collins hurried down the corridor.
"Amelia."
She turned immediately.
"What happened?"
"We found surveillance footage."
"From where?"
"The prison."
Daniel Ashford's escape.
Collins opened a tablet.
The footage showed the power failing for exactly eighteen seconds.
Long enough for every electronic lock to open.
When the cameras returned...
Daniel's cell was empty.
But something else caught Amelia's attention.
A woman walked calmly through the corridor.
White suit.
Dark sunglasses.
Identical to the clothes Amelia herself had worn at the mansion.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
"That's you."
Amelia slowly shook her head.
"No."
The woman removed her sunglasses for a brief moment.
The camera captured her face.
Everyone in the room fell silent.
She looked exactly like Amelia.
Only younger.
And without the scar across her left cheek.
Collins whispered,
"Who is she?"
Amelia answered with visible disbelief.
"My twin."
Evelyn stared.
"You have a twin sister?"
Amelia nodded slowly.
"We were separated when we were children."
"I believed she died decades ago."
She looked back at the frozen image on the tablet.
"I was wrong."
Meanwhile...
Several states away...
Daniel Ashford stepped out of a black SUV onto a secluded estate hidden deep in the mountains.
The front door opened before he knocked.
The woman waiting inside wore a flawless white suit.
She smiled as he entered.
"You escaped."
Daniel nodded.
"As promised."
She poured two glasses of wine.
"You failed to kill Evelyn."
Daniel accepted the glass.
"That was never the mission."
She smiled knowingly.
"I know."
Daniel looked at her carefully.
"She remembers more than expected."
The woman's smile disappeared.
"Then we'll have to accelerate the timetable."
She walked toward a large painting hanging above the fireplace.
With a hidden switch, the painting slid aside.
Behind it stood a reinforced vault door.
She entered a twelve-digit code.
The door opened.
Inside, dozens of framed photographs lined the walls.
Every photograph showed the same family.
The Carters.
Richard.
Amelia.
Eleanor.
Evelyn.
Olivia.
Some pictures were decades old.
Others had been taken only weeks earlier.
Daniel frowned.
"You've been watching them all this time."
The woman answered without turning around.
"For twenty-five years."
She reached for a leather file marked:
PROJECT HEIR.
When she opened it, the first page displayed one sentence.
The wrong daughter survived.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"What does that mean?"
The woman looked at him with cold, unreadable eyes.
"It means Evelyn was never the child we were supposed to lose."
Back at Mercy General Hospital...
As Amelia continued staring at the surveillance image of the mysterious woman in white, another memory surfaced.
Not from fifteen years ago.
From thirty.
A promise whispered by her mother before they were separated.
"If one sister survives... she must protect the bloodline."
Amelia's breathing slowed.
She finally understood.
Someone else had been protecting the Carter family all these years.
Someone who had stayed hidden.
Someone who had manipulated events from the shadows.
The question was no longer whether this woman was friend or enemy.
The question was why she had waited until now to reveal herself.
Before anyone could speak, Agent Collins' secure phone rang again.
He answered.
His face drained of color.
"They've found Olivia."
Evelyn took a step forward.
"My sister?"
Collins swallowed.
"They found her..."
A long pause.
"...inside the Ashford estate."
May you like
"But she doesn't remember who she is."
