CHAPTER 10 — The Billion-Dollar Betrayal

CHAPTER 10 — The Billion-Dollar Betrayal

Money can buy companies.

It can buy silence.

It can even buy loyalty.

But there is one thing money can never buy.

Time.

And after fifteen years of lies...

Time had finally run out.

The woman in the white suit disappeared before court resumed.

Security officers searched every hallway.

Every entrance.

Every surveillance recording.

Nothing.

It was as though she had never entered the courthouse at all.

Only Evelyn knew she had been there.

Because for a single moment...

Their eyes had met.

And a forgotten memory had returned.

Rain.

Smoke.

The twisted remains of a black sedan hanging over the edge of a mountain road.

Someone pulling a terrified little girl through a shattered window.

A woman dressed in white whispering,

"Don't tell anyone your real name."

"No matter what happens..."

"Stay alive."

The memory vanished as quickly as it had appeared.

Leaving behind only one certainty.

The woman had not been her enemy.

She had saved her.

"Miss Carter?"

Judge Eleanor Whitmore's voice brought Evelyn back to the courtroom.

"Are you able to continue?"

Evelyn slowly nodded.

"Yes, Your Honor."

Across the room, Daniel Ashford watched her carefully.

He noticed the change.

The confusion.

The fear.

And for the first time since the trial began...

He looked genuinely unsettled.

"What did you remember?"

he wondered.

The prosecution called its next witness.

Martin Lowell.

Former Chief Financial Officer of Carter Biotech.

He entered under heavy federal protection.

Martin looked exhausted.

Older than his sixty-two years.

He raised his right hand and took the oath.

The prosecutor approached.

"Mr. Lowell..."

"How long did you work for Carter Biotech?"

"Twenty-eight years."

"Were you employed before Mr. Daniel Ashford became CEO?"

"Yes."

"And after?"

"Yes."

The prosecutor placed a thick stack of financial reports before the jury.

"Can you explain these?"

Martin took a deep breath.

"These are transfer records."

"Over the past ten years..."

"...more than 4.8 billion dollars disappeared from Carter-owned companies."

The courtroom erupted.

Judge Whitmore struck the gavel.

"Order."

Martin continued.

"The money wasn't stolen all at once."

"It vanished slowly."

"In hundreds of legal transactions."

"Small enough to avoid attention."

"But together..."

He looked directly at Daniel.

"They nearly destroyed the Carter family."

Daniel's attorney stood immediately.

"Objection."

"Those transactions were approved."

Martin nodded.

"They were."

"By whom?"

The attorney smiled confidently.

"By Evelyn Carter."

Silence.

Every eye turned toward Evelyn.

She stared at the documents.

Her signature appeared on every page.

Perfect.

Authentic.

Impossible.

"I never signed those."

The attorney walked closer.

"Then how do you explain this?"

He projected one document onto the courtroom screen.

Digital authentication.

Biometric verification.

Time stamp.

Fingerprint confirmation.

Everything appeared legitimate.

Even Agent Collins frowned.

Amelia whispered,

"Something's wrong."

That afternoon...

Dr. Reeves requested permission to examine the documents.

Within minutes...

He noticed something no one else had seen.

"The signatures are genuine."

The prosecutor looked confused.

"Then they're real."

Reeves slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They're genuine..."

"...because they weren't forged."

Everyone stared.

"What do you mean?"

He looked toward Evelyn.

"Someone took your fingerprints."

"Repeatedly."

"Over many years."

"Probably while you were unconscious."

The courtroom became deathly silent.

Evelyn remembered every annual medical examination Daniel had insisted she attend.

Every vitamin injection.

Every routine physical.

Every unexplained sedative after "stress-related exhaustion."

Dr. Reeves continued.

"Your biometric identity wasn't stolen."

"It was harvested."

Daniel closed his eyes.

The truth had finally surfaced.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Meanwhile...

Far beneath the Carter Headquarters...

The artificial intelligence system protecting Project Aegis activated.

A mechanical voice echoed through the underground vault.

WARNING

PRIMARY FINANCIAL BREACH DETECTED

Hidden compartments opened one after another.

Ancient paper ledgers.

Encrypted hard drives.

Gold master keys.

Records dating back more than fifty years.

Richard Carter's final contingency plan had awakened.

On the largest monitor, a prerecorded message appeared.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"If this archive has opened..."

"...then someone has betrayed not only our family..."

"...but every family we ever promised to protect."

He paused.

"There is one document they can never possess."

A map appeared behind him.

Not of bank accounts.

Not of investments.

But of hundreds of hospitals, research centers, schools, and charitable foundations around the world.

"The Carter fortune was never our greatest asset."

"Our greatest asset..."

"...was the people whose lives depended on us."

Back in the courtroom...

The prosecution introduced its final exhibit of the day.

A hidden audio recording recovered from Vanessa Reed's encrypted drive.

Judge Whitmore allowed it to be played.

Daniel's voice filled the courtroom.

Clear.

Calm.

Emotionless.

"Money isn't the objective."

A second voice asked,

"Then what is?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"Control."

"Once Evelyn signs everything..."

"The Carter name disappears forever."

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Not even Daniel's attorney.

As the jury prepared to leave for the evening, the courtroom doors suddenly opened.

A U.S. Marshal hurried inside.

He whispered something to the judge.

Judge Whitmore's expression changed immediately.

She looked toward Evelyn.

"Miss Carter..."

"I'm afraid we have unexpected news."

The courtroom held its breath.

"The DNA analysis has been completed."

Evelyn stood slowly.

"About my mother?"

The judge nodded.

"Yes."

A long silence followed.

Then she spoke the words that shattered everything they believed.

"The woman identified as your mother..."

"...was not related to you."

Gasps echoed across the courtroom.

"But..."

the judge continued,

"...another match has been found."

She looked down at the report.

Then back at Evelyn.

"Your biological mother..."

"...is alive."

At that exact moment...

A woman wearing a white suit quietly watched the proceedings from a television inside a black limousine.

She smiled.

May you like

"Not for long."
