CHAPTER 11 — The Truth About Her Father's Death

CHAPTER 11 — The Truth About Her Father's Death

The courtroom did not erupt.

It fell silent.

The kind of silence that arrives when reality becomes impossible to ignore.

For fifteen years, Evelyn Carter had mourned two parents.

Now she had learned that one body had belonged to a stranger.

And somewhere...

Her real mother was still alive.

Judge Eleanor Whitmore called for a recess.

No one moved.

Reporters stared in stunned disbelief.

Even Daniel Ashford lowered his head.

Not because he was surprised.

Because he knew the next truth would be even more devastating.

Outside the courtroom, Amelia guided Evelyn into a secure conference room.

The door locked behind them.

Neither woman spoke for several moments.

Finally, Evelyn whispered,

"Did you know?"

Amelia closed her eyes.

"I hoped."

"You hoped?"

"I never had proof."

Evelyn stepped backward.

"For fifteen years..."

"You let me believe she was dead."

Amelia's voice broke.

"I let you survive."

Agent Collins entered carrying another sealed file.

"The DNA laboratory finished examining the remains recovered yesterday."

He placed the report on the table.

"The victim was Eleanor Carter."

Evelyn frowned.

"My aunt."

Collins nodded.

"She died less than forty-eight hours before we found her."

Amelia's hands trembled.

"Someone kept my sister alive for fifteen years."

"And then murdered her..."

"...just before we found her."

Miles away...

Inside an abandoned mountain lodge...

The woman in the white suit watched the news without expression.

A young operative approached.

"Ma'am."

"The trial isn't going as planned."

She smiled faintly.

"It is following the only plan that matters."

The operative hesitated.

"Should we eliminate Daniel?"

"No."

She answered calmly.

"He still has one secret."

"And until he speaks..."

"He lives."

Back at the courthouse...

Dr. Samuel Reeves entered carrying an evidence bag.

Inside rested a damaged wristwatch.

The glass was shattered.

The leather strap burned.

Evelyn immediately recognized it.

"My father's watch."

Reeves nodded.

"It was recovered from the original crash site."

"I thought investigators searched everything."

"They did."

"This wasn't found until last week."

He carefully removed the watch.

"There was something hidden inside."

Using a precision tool, he opened the back cover.

Folded tightly beneath the movement...

Was a tiny strip of microfilm.

Agent Collins stared.

"My God."

The film was rushed to the federal laboratory.

Within hours...

Its contents appeared on a secure monitor.

Not financial records.

Not bank accounts.

A video.

The recording began with heavy rain.

A dashboard camera.

Richard Carter behind the wheel.

Beside him...

His wife.

In the back seat...

Two frightened little girls.

Evelyn's breathing stopped.

"There were two of us."

Amelia gently squeezed her shoulder.

"Yes."

The video continued.

Richard looked into the camera.

"If anyone ever sees this..."

"...it means we failed."

He glanced at his wife.

"They've found us."

A violent impact shook the vehicle.

Headlights filled the rear window.

Another car had begun ramming them.

Evelyn covered her mouth.

"No..."

Richard kept driving.

"Amelia..."

he spoke into a secure radio,

"Protocol White Rose."

Static answered.

Then a woman's voice.

"I'm on my way."

The woman in white.

Richard looked toward the back seat.

"Evelyn."

"Olivia."

"Listen carefully."

"You must never tell anyone who you are."

His wife reached back, holding both girls' hands.

"We love you."

The recording shook violently.

The second vehicle struck again.

The guardrail splintered.

Richard made one final decision.

He turned sharply toward a narrow service road hidden behind dense trees.

The pursuing vehicle missed the turn.

It crashed through the guardrail.

But Richard's car...

Never went over the cliff.

The video ended.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Evelyn whispered,

"The accident..."

Amelia nodded.

"It was staged."

Agent Collins slowly stood.

"If Richard survived..."

"Where did he go?"

No one answered.

Because there was only one person who could.

Daniel Ashford.

Inside the detention center...

Daniel requested another meeting.

This time...

Not with his lawyer.

Not with prosecutors.

Only with Evelyn.

The request shocked everyone.

"He wants to confess."

Agent Collins frowned.

"Why now?"

Daniel looked directly into the security camera.

"Because if I don't..."

"...she'll never find her father."

Late that evening...

Evelyn entered the interrogation room alone.

Daniel sat quietly on the opposite side of the table.

He looked older than he had that morning.

Defeated.

"You lied to me."

Evelyn's voice was steady.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

"You poisoned me."

"Yes."

"You stole my company."

"Yes."

She leaned forward.

"Did you kill my father?"

Daniel finally looked at her.

His answer came without hesitation.

"No."

Evelyn stared.

"I don't believe you."

"You don't have to."

He slowly pushed a sealed envelope across the table.

"I never killed Richard Carter."

"I couldn't."

"Because when I joined the conspiracy..."

"...he was already gone."

Evelyn looked at the envelope.

"What is this?"

"The last location where I saw him alive."

She reached for it.

Daniel suddenly grabbed her wrist.

His voice dropped to almost a whisper.

"Listen carefully."

"They're watching."

Evelyn's heartbeat quickened.

"Who?"

Daniel released her hand.

"The person you keep calling..."

"...the woman in the white suit."

A long silence.

Then Daniel spoke the sentence that changed everything.

"She didn't save your family."

He swallowed.

"She created this war."

At that exact moment, every light inside the detention facility went dark.

Emergency alarms blared.

A violent explosion shook the building.

The walls trembled.

Agent Collins shouted from outside.

"Protect Evelyn!"

Gunfire echoed through the corridor.

Someone had come for Daniel.

Or perhaps...

May you like

To make sure he never spoke again.
