CHAPTER 6 — The Daughter They Stole

CHAPTER 6 — The Daughter They Stole

Some kidnappings happen in a single night.

A child disappears.

A ransom is demanded.

The police begin searching.

But there is another kind of kidnapping.

One that leaves no broken windows.

No ransom note.

No missing-person report.

A child grows up believing the lie.

And never realizes her entire life was stolen.

The underground command center was silent.

Only the soft hum of servers filled the enormous chamber hidden beneath Carter Biotech.

Evelyn stood in front of the holographic image of her father.

Richard Carter smiled gently through the decades-old recording.

"If you are seeing this," he said, "then I have already failed to protect you."

Evelyn's throat tightened.

"I never wanted you to inherit this burden."

"But some families inherit wealth."

"Ours inherited responsibility."

The recording paused as encrypted files unlocked across dozens of monitors.

Project Aegis.

Operation Phoenix.

Guardian Network.

None of the names meant anything to Evelyn.

Yet somehow...

They felt familiar.

Like memories waiting just beyond reach.

Amelia watched her niece carefully.

"Your father spent years preparing for this day."

"He knew someone inside our own circle would betray us."

Evelyn turned.

"Daniel."

Amelia slowly shook her head.

"No."

"Daniel was only recruited."

"The betrayal started long before he entered your life."

Agent Collins stepped forward.

"You mean fifteen years ago."

Amelia looked at him.

"I mean before Evelyn was even born."

Thousands of miles away...

Inside a private estate overlooking Lake Geneva...

An elderly man placed a crystal glass onto a mahogany desk.

He watched Richard Carter's hologram through a hacked satellite feed.

The old man smiled.

"So..."

"The girl finally knows."

A younger woman entered quietly.

"Sir..."

"Should we activate the remaining assets?"

The old man looked toward a family portrait hanging above the fireplace.

Three children smiled back at the camera.

One of them was Richard Carter.

The second...

Amelia.

The third child had been scratched out with a knife.

"Yes."

He answered calmly.

"Bring the daughter home."

Back in the command center...

Richard's recorded image continued.

"Evelyn..."

"The greatest lie they ever told you..."

"...was not about my death."

Evelyn held her breath.

"It was about your identity."

The room seemed to stop moving.

"You believe your name has always been Evelyn Carter."

Richard smiled sadly.

"It wasn't."

Evelyn whispered,

"What?"

Richard reached into his jacket in the recording and removed a small birth certificate.

"The day you were born..."

"I gave you another name."

"The safest way to protect you..."

"...was to make the world forget it."

Before the recording could continue—

Every screen in the command center suddenly flashed red.

UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS DETECTED

FIREWALL BREACH

INTERNAL USER VERIFIED

Agent Collins immediately drew his weapon.

"Someone's inside the system."

Amelia's expression darkened.

"No."

She stared at the screen.

"They've always been inside."

Across the city...

Daniel Ashford smiled inside his prison cell.

A guard approached carrying dinner.

As soon as the tray touched the table, Daniel noticed a folded piece of paper hidden beneath the bread.

Only two words were written.

Midnight. Ready.

He burned the note with his lighter before the cameras completed another rotation.

Then he leaned back.

The game wasn't over.

Not even close.

Late that evening...

Evelyn finally returned to the recovery suite above ground.

Her body remained weak.

But her mind refused to rest.

She opened the leather notebook Richard had left behind.

Most pages contained research notes.

Business strategies.

Personal reflections.

Until one folded page slipped onto the floor.

A photograph.

It showed Richard holding a laughing little girl.

Not Evelyn.

She had never seen the child before.

The back of the picture contained only one handwritten sentence.

"Find your sister before they do."

Evelyn froze.

"I don't have a sister."

Amelia entered the room carrying tea.

The moment she saw the photograph...

The cup shattered against the floor.

Her face turned completely pale.

"No..."

She whispered.

"It can't be."

Evelyn looked up.

"Aunt Amelia..."

"Who is she?"

Amelia's hands trembled for the first time in fifteen years.

"Her name..."

She swallowed hard.

"...was Olivia."

The room fell silent.

"What happened to her?"

Amelia slowly lowered herself into a chair.

"The night your parents' car went over the cliff..."

She closed her eyes.

"...you weren't the only child in that vehicle."

At that exact moment...

A secure phone rang inside the command center.

Agent Collins answered.

His expression changed instantly.

"What?"

He listened for several seconds.

Then looked toward Amelia.

"The prison has been breached."

"Daniel Ashford is gone."

A second call interrupted before anyone could speak.

Collins answered again.

His face became even more grim.

"They found another body."

"Whose?"

Collins looked directly at Evelyn.

"The DNA results just came back."

He hesitated.

"The victim..."

"...is listed as your biological mother."

Evelyn's world tilted.

"My mother died fifteen years ago."

Collins slowly shook his head.

"That's the problem."

"The body is less than twenty-four hours old."

The room fell into stunned silence.

Because if Evelyn's mother had only died yesterday...

Then the woman buried fifteen years ago...

May you like

Had never been her mother at all.
