CHAPTER 4 — The Poison That Wasn't Meant to Fail

CHAPTER 4 — The Poison That Wasn't Meant to Fail

Darkness swallowed the hospital floor.

The emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the corridor in a deep crimson glow.

Every shadow suddenly looked alive.

Outside Evelyn Carter's room, heavy footsteps came to a stop.

No one spoke.

No one knocked again.

The silence itself became a threat.

"Positions."

Amelia Carter's voice was calm.

Controlled.

Years of hiding had not diminished the instincts that once made her one of the Carter family's greatest protectors.

Three federal agents immediately formed a defensive line.

Agent Collins drew his pistol.

"No one enters."

The door handle moved.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Once.

Twice.

Then it stopped.

A voice echoed from the hallway.

"We're not here to kill her."

Amelia didn't answer.

The stranger continued.

"If we wanted Evelyn Carter dead..."

A pause.

"...she would already be dead."

Inside the room, Evelyn felt another sharp pain spread through her chest.

Her breathing became shallow.

The antidote had saved her life.

But something still felt terribly wrong.

She looked down at the IV line attached to her arm.

A single drop of dark red blood slowly traveled backward through the tube.

The physician frowned.

"That's not normal."

He checked her monitor.

Heart rate...

Increasing.

Blood pressure...

Falling again.

Temperature...

Rising rapidly.

His expression changed.

"No..."

He whispered.

"What?"

Amelia asked.

The doctor stared at the toxicology report.

"The antidote worked."

Everyone looked confused.

"But..."

He swallowed.

"It neutralized the poison we believed was inside her."

He slowly raised his eyes.

"There was another toxin."

Silence.

Then Agent Collins asked the question everyone feared.

"How many?"

The physician inhaled deeply.

"Two."

"The first poison was meant to kill within thirty minutes."

"The second..."

He hesitated.

"...activates only after the antidote is administered."

Even Amelia stood frozen.

"I've never seen anything like it."

The doctor nodded.

"Neither have I."

Across town...

Daniel Ashford smiled for the first time since his arrest.

The man from the Black Ledger watched him carefully.

"You knew."

Daniel leaned back in his chair.

"You think I planned to fail?"

The stranger remained silent.

Daniel laughed quietly.

"Vanessa always underestimated me."

"So did Evelyn."

"So did everyone."

He folded his hands together.

"The poison wasn't supposed to kill her immediately."

"It was supposed to create panic."

The stranger's eyes narrowed.

"And the second toxin?"

Daniel's smile widened.

"Insurance."

"If someone managed to save her..."

"They would finish the job themselves."

Back at the hospital...

Dr. Samuel Reeves ordered every medication stopped immediately.

"No one touches her IV."

"No injections."

"No oral medication."

"Nothing enters her body until we know exactly what we're dealing with."

A young nurse looked frightened.

"But she'll die."

Samuel nodded.

"If we guess wrong..."

"She'll die faster."

Amelia stepped beside Evelyn's bed.

"You need to stay awake."

Evelyn forced herself to nod.

"My father..."

She whispered.

"The vault..."

Amelia squeezed her hand.

"We'll find it."

Evelyn shook her head weakly.

"No..."

"You don't understand."

Her breathing became uneven.

"It isn't..."

"...a vault."

Amelia frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Images flashed through her fading memory.

Her father.

A rainy afternoon.

A chessboard.

His voice.

"The safest place to hide a secret..."

"Is inside something everyone believes is ordinary."

Her eyes opened.

"The key..."

She whispered.

"It doesn't open a room."

"It opens..."

Suddenly, the heart monitor screamed.

Her pulse skyrocketed.

The physician rushed forward.

"She's crashing!"

Outside the room...

The unknown visitors finally acted.

The corridor windows shattered simultaneously.

Smoke grenades rolled across the floor.

Alarms screamed throughout the hospital.

Gunfire erupted.

Federal agents returned fire while shielding the hospital staff.

Agent Collins shouted into his radio.

"We're under attack!"

"Repeat!"

"The executive floor is compromised!"

Inside the chaos...

A woman dressed as a nurse quietly entered through a side emergency door.

No one noticed.

Her uniform was spotless.

Her identification badge appeared authentic.

She carried a standard medical tray.

Nothing unusual.

She walked calmly toward Evelyn's bed.

One step.

Then another.

Amelia turned just in time.

"Stop."

The nurse smiled politely.

"I'm here to help."

"No."

Amelia slowly raised her pistol.

"You're not one of ours."

For one brief second...

The woman's expression changed.

The warmth vanished.

Only cold calculation remained.

She reached beneath the tray.

Not for medicine.

For a syringe filled with transparent liquid.

The room exploded into motion.

Agent Collins tackled the assassin before she reached Evelyn.

The syringe flew across the room.

It shattered against the wall.

Where the liquid touched the paint...

The surface instantly blackened.

Dr. Reeves stared in horror.

"My God..."

Amelia looked at the burned wall.

"What is that?"

The doctor whispered,

"Not poison."

Everyone looked at him.

He slowly answered.

"It's an experimental nerve agent."

One drop...

Had eaten through hospital paint within seconds.

If it had entered Evelyn's bloodstream...

No antidote on Earth could have saved her.

The assassin laughed despite being restrained.

"You still don't understand."

Amelia stepped closer.

"Understand what?"

The woman looked directly at Evelyn.

Then smiled.

"Daniel Ashford never wanted her dead."

Silence.

The woman continued.

"He needed her alive..."

"...until she remembered."

Amelia's heartbeat stopped for a moment.

"Remembered what?"

The assassin looked toward Evelyn one final time.

Then bit down hard.

A hidden cyanide capsule cracked between her teeth.

Foam appeared at the corner of her mouth.

Within seconds...

She was dead.

No name.

No confession.

Only one final mystery.

Amelia slowly turned back toward Evelyn.

Because if Daniel had never intended to kill her...

Then the poison had never been the real weapon.

Someone had been waiting...

For Evelyn Carter to remember something buried fifteen years ago.

And whatever that memory was...

May you like

People were willing to start a war to keep it hidden.
