CHAPTER 9 — The Trial of the Century

CHAPTER 9 — The Trial of the Century

Justice does not begin inside a courtroom.

It begins the moment someone refuses to stay silent.

By sunrise, every major news network carried the same headline.

CARTER EMPIRE SCANDAL EXPLODES

Financial markets reacted within minutes.

Trading on Carter Biotech remained suspended.

Federal investigators executed warrants across six states.

Daniel Ashford's face appeared on every television screen.

Former CEO.

Fugitive.

Primary suspect.

But behind the headlines...

The real war had already begun.

Evelyn Carter stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of the underground command center, watching helicopters circle above the city.

"They're turning this into a spectacle."

Agent Collins nodded.

"Public pressure is growing."

"The Attorney General wants an expedited trial."

Amelia remained focused on a different problem.

"That assumes Daniel intends to surrender."

Collins looked at her.

"You think he'll run?"

"No."

Amelia answered quietly.

"I think he'll walk into court."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Why would he do that?"

"Because Daniel has always believed the courtroom is another battlefield."

"He doesn't need to escape."

"He only needs to control the story."

Across town...

Inside a heavily guarded safe house...

Daniel adjusted his tie before a large mirror.

The expensive navy suit fit perfectly.

His injuries from the arrest had disappeared beneath flawless tailoring.

Vanessa Reed stood behind him.

"You look confident."

Daniel smiled.

"I've spent my entire career convincing people to believe impossible things."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"And today?"

He picked up a silver cufflink engraved with the Ashford family crest.

"Today..."

"I'm going to convince twelve jurors that Evelyn Carter is lying."

Meanwhile...

Federal prosecutors assembled inside the Justice Department.

Boxes of evidence lined the conference room.

Financial records.

Poison analysis.

Security footage.

Witness statements.

Dr. Samuel Reeves placed the toxicology report on the table.

"The poison was engineered."

"There is no commercial source."

The lead prosecutor looked up.

"Can you prove who ordered it?"

Reeves hesitated.

"No."

"But I can prove someone with extraordinary resources commissioned it."

The room fell silent.

That was enough to establish conspiracy.

Not enough to identify the mastermind.

Later that afternoon...

Evelyn entered the courthouse through a secure underground entrance.

Hundreds of reporters waited outside.

Microphones.

Cameras.

Questions shouted from every direction.

She heard none of them.

Only Amelia's voice.

"Remember who you are."

Evelyn nodded.

"I'm trying."

Amelia smiled gently.

"No."

"You don't need to try anymore."

"You only need to stop pretending you're someone else."

Courtroom Seven.

The largest federal courtroom in the district.

Every seat was occupied.

Business leaders.

Government officials.

Journalists.

Former Carter employees.

People who had waited years for this day.

The bailiff announced,

"All rise."

The judge entered.

The proceedings began.

Daniel Ashford appeared exactly on time.

He wore the same calm smile that had charmed investors for years.

If someone had not known the accusations against him...

They might have mistaken him for the victim.

His eyes found Evelyn across the courtroom.

He smiled.

She did not.

The prosecution delivered its opening statement.

"This case is not merely about attempted murder."

"It concerns fifteen years of calculated deception."

"It concerns stolen identities."

"Corporate fraud."

"Conspiracy."

"And the systematic destruction of one family."

Every word echoed through the packed courtroom.

Daniel remained expressionless.

Then his attorney stood.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"My client is not perfect."

"He made mistakes."

"But mistakes do not make someone a murderer."

He turned toward Evelyn.

"The evidence will show that Ms. Carter has suffered significant memory loss."

The courtroom grew quiet.

"Trauma affects perception."

"Memory can be manipulated."

He paused deliberately.

"And how can we convict a man..."

"...based upon memories that may not even be real?"

Evelyn felt every eye in the courtroom turn toward her.

Exactly as Daniel intended.

The first witness was Dr. Samuel Reeves.

He calmly explained the poison.

The antidote.

The neurological suppression.

Every scientific detail.

Daniel's attorney listened carefully.

Then asked only one question.

"Doctor..."

"Can you state with absolute certainty that my client administered the poison?"

Reeves hesitated.

"No."

"Thank you."

No further questions.

The second witness...

Surprised everyone.

Vanessa Reed.

Gasps spread through the courtroom.

She walked confidently to the witness stand.

Daniel frowned for the first time.

This had not been part of the plan.

Vanessa raised her right hand and took the oath.

The prosecutor asked,

"Ms. Reed..."

"Why are you here today?"

She looked directly at Daniel.

"Because I finally realized..."

"...I was never his partner."

"I was only his next victim."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

Vanessa reached into her handbag.

"I brought something."

She handed a small encrypted flash drive to the prosecutor.

"The original recordings."

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Daniel stood abruptly.

"Objection!"

The judge struck the gavel.

"Order!"

Vanessa never looked away from him.

"There are conversations on that drive."

"Every meeting."

"Every payment."

"Every order."

"And one recording..."

She swallowed.

"...where Daniel admits he never married Evelyn for love."

Silence.

Then she quietly repeated his exact words.

"You don't marry an empire.

You inherit it."

Daniel's confident smile disappeared.

For the first time...

He looked genuinely afraid.

During the recess, Amelia received a secure message.

Agent Collins approached immediately.

"What happened?"

She handed him the phone.

One sentence.

THE WOMAN IN WHITE HAS ENTERED THE COURTHOUSE.

Collins looked around instinctively.

"Where?"

"No one knows."

Another message arrived.

SHE ISN'T HERE FOR DANIEL.

SHE IS HERE FOR EVELYN.

Amelia's instincts screamed.

Something about the trial felt wrong.

Too organized.

Too convenient.

Then she realized the truth.

The courtroom itself...

Had become the trap.

She turned toward the courtroom doors just as the lights flickered once.

Then twice.

At the exact same moment, a woman in a white suit quietly took a seat in the last row.

She removed her sunglasses.

Across the courtroom...

Evelyn looked up.

Their eyes met.

And for the first time in her life...

Evelyn remembered her.

Not as a stranger.

May you like

But as the woman who had carried her away from the burning car fifteen years ago.
