CHAPTER 12 — The Last Witness

CHAPTER 12 — The Last Witness
The explosion tore through the detention center with enough force to shatter every window.
Concrete dust filled the corridor.
Emergency lights spun wildly across the walls.
Screams echoed through the darkness.
For several seconds...
No one knew who was alive.
"Evelyn!"
Agent Collins tackled her behind an overturned steel table as another explosion rocked the building.
Fragments of glass rained from the ceiling.
Amelia entered through the smoke with two tactical agents behind her.
"Status!"
"Unknown."
Collins checked the hallway.
"Multiple armed suspects inside."
"They're moving toward the interrogation wing."
Amelia looked toward Daniel's room.
"They're not here for Evelyn."
"They're here for him."
Inside the interrogation room...
Daniel Ashford remained seated.
He didn't run.
He didn't panic.
He simply stared at the sealed envelope still resting on the table.
The emergency door burst open.
Three masked gunmen entered.
None of them aimed at Evelyn.
All three pointed their rifles directly at Daniel.
Their leader removed a voice changer from his collar.
"You talked."
Daniel smiled bitterly.
"Not enough."
The gunman stepped closer.
"Our employer disagrees."
A single shot echoed.
But it wasn't fired by the assassins.
Agent Collins struck first.
The bullet shattered the room's overhead lights.
Darkness swallowed everyone.
More gunfire erupted.
Then silence.
When the backup generators activated seconds later...
Two assassins lay unconscious.
One had escaped.
Daniel still sat in his chair.
Alive.
But bleeding.
A bullet had torn through his left shoulder.
Dr. Reeves rushed forward.
"We need to move him."
Daniel grabbed Evelyn's sleeve before anyone could lift him.
"No."
His breathing was ragged.
"I'm done running."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I'm the last witness."
The room fell silent.
Amelia stepped closer.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Everyone else..."
"...is dead."
One hour later...
The survivors gathered inside the underground command center beneath Carter Headquarters.
Security had reached its highest level.
Every communication line was encrypted.
Every entrance sealed.
Daniel sat in a reinforced medical chair while his wound was treated.
No lawyer.
No negotiations.
Only the truth.
Evelyn stood across from him.
"You said you were the last witness."
Daniel nodded.
"To the original conspiracy."
Amelia folded her arms.
"Then start talking."
Daniel looked toward the enormous Carter family crest engraved on the wall.
"I never planned to become part of this."
"No one ever does."
"My first assignment was simple."
"Monitor Richard Carter."
"Report his movements."
"Nothing more."
Evelyn frowned.
"Who hired you?"
Daniel remained silent for several seconds.
Then answered.
"The Black Ledger."
Agent Collins activated a digital recorder.
"Explain."
Daniel took a slow breath.
"The Black Ledger wasn't a company."
"It wasn't a criminal organization."
"It wasn't even a government program."
"It was..."
He hesitated.
"...a council."
Photographs appeared on the large screen.
Powerful politicians.
Corporate leaders.
Military contractors.
International financiers.
Faces recognized across the world.
"They believed no family should control the Carter network."
"So they decided to take it."
Amelia's expression hardened.
"By killing Richard."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"That wasn't the original plan."
Silence.
"What was?"
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
"They wanted him to surrender."
"Richard refused."
"So someone inside the council changed the operation."
Dr. Reeves quietly interrupted.
"You keep saying 'someone.'"
"You still don't know who?"
Daniel gave a tired smile.
"I knew."
"I just never saw their face."
"The orders always came through one person."
"The woman in white."
Evelyn's heart tightened.
"The woman who saved me?"
Daniel looked at her.
"Did she?"
The question lingered.
Had she truly saved Evelyn?
Or had she simply chosen which child survived?
Daniel reached into his jacket.
Agent Collins immediately raised his weapon.
"Easy."
Daniel slowly removed a tiny silver key.
Smaller than the one Richard had left.
Different shape.
Different engraving.
He placed it on the table.
"This opens the second archive."
Amelia frowned.
"There are two?"
Daniel nodded.
"Richard built one."
"The council built another."
"Everything you know..."
"...comes from Richard's side."
He pushed the key toward Evelyn.
"If you want the whole truth..."
"You'll need both."
At that moment...
The underground facility's AI system activated without warning.
Every monitor turned black.
A familiar face appeared.
Richard Carter.
Not the prerecorded message they had already seen.
This recording was different.
His clothes were older.
His beard untrimmed.
He looked exhausted.
"If this file has opened..."
"...then Daniel Ashford is still alive."
Everyone froze.
Richard continued.
"Daniel..."
"I know you'll eventually regret the choices you made."
Daniel stared at the screen in disbelief.
"He knew."
Richard nodded slightly in the recording.
"You were never the mastermind."
"You were only the man they intended to blame."
Daniel lowered his head.
Tears filled his eyes for the first time.
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this with my daughter..."
"Tell her one thing."
A long pause.
"I never stopped looking for her."
Evelyn broke down.
Every year she had believed her father abandoned her.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every lonely night.
He had been searching.
Before the recording ended...
Richard spoke one final sentence.
"The last witness..."
"...isn't Daniel."
The screen went black.
Silence consumed the room.
Agent Collins whispered,
"Then who is?"
As if answering the question...
The facility's biometric alarm suddenly activated.
IDENTITY VERIFIED
RICHARD CARTER
Every door in the underground complex unlocked simultaneously.
Everyone stared at the monitor.
One final message appeared.
PRIMARY FOUNDER HAS ENTERED THE FACILITY.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Because only two explanations existed.
Either someone had stolen Richard Carter's identity...
Or after fifteen years...
May you like
Evelyn's father had finally come home.
