CHAPTER 8 — The Trap Inside the Family

CHAPTER 8 — The Trap Inside the Family

The most dangerous traps are never built by strangers.

They are built by people who know exactly where you feel safe.

Exactly who you trust.

Exactly what you would sacrifice to protect.

Olivia Carter opened her eyes to a ceiling she did not recognize.

White.

Perfectly smooth.

No windows.

Only recessed lights glowing softly above her.

She tried to sit up.

Pain shot through the back of her head.

A woman in a white medical coat entered carrying a tray.

"Good morning."

Her smile looked practiced.

"How are you feeling?"

Olivia frowned.

"My head hurts."

"That's normal."

"Do I know you?"

The woman hesitated only a fraction of a second.

"I'm Dr. Morgan."

"You've been recovering from an accident."

"An accident?"

"Yes."

"You've been with us for almost three years."

Olivia searched her memory.

Nothing.

Only darkness.

Scattered dreams.

A little girl laughing.

Someone singing.

A silver key.

Then everything vanished again.

Several miles away...

Evelyn stood inside the underground command center staring at Olivia's photograph.

Her sister.

Alive.

Somehow alive.

"Where is she?"

Agent Collins enlarged the surveillance image.

"She was removed from the Ashford estate before our team arrived."

Amelia crossed her arms.

"They expected us."

"They always stay one move ahead."

Evelyn looked toward her aunt.

"Then stop reacting."

The room became quiet.

Amelia raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

Evelyn slowly folded the photograph.

"We've been chasing their plans since this started."

"Maybe it's time they started chasing ours."

A faint smile appeared on Amelia's face.

For the first time since the poison attack...

She saw Richard Carter in her niece.

Meanwhile...

Daniel Ashford entered the private library of Blackwood Manor.

The mysterious woman in the white suit stood beside the fireplace.

She did not turn around.

"Olivia remembered something."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

"A melody."

"So?"

The woman finally looked at him.

"It wasn't just a lullaby."

"It was a trigger."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

She walked toward an antique record player.

With careful fingers, she placed a weathered vinyl record onto the turntable.

Music filled the room.

Soft.

Gentle.

Almost comforting.

Daniel felt nothing.

But somewhere beneath the estate...

Olivia suddenly clutched her head.

Pain exploded through her mind.

A child's voice echoed inside her memory.

"Run, Liv!"

"Don't look back!"

A man's voice followed.

"Protect your sister!"

Then...

A gunshot.

Olivia screamed.

Back at Carter Headquarters...

Dr. Reeves completed another analysis of the poison extracted from Evelyn's blood.

His expression became increasingly troubled.

"This isn't possible."

Amelia looked up.

"What did you find?"

He pointed toward two molecular structures displayed on the screen.

"They're nearly identical."

"But one of them..."

He paused.

"...was designed to preserve specific memories."

Evelyn frowned.

"I don't understand."

Dr. Reeves turned toward her.

"The poison wasn't only meant to kill you."

"It was also preventing something."

"What?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"Your memory."

Silence settled over the room.

"Every year..."

Dr. Reeves continued quietly,

"...someone administered microscopic doses."

"Enough to suppress traumatic memories."

"But not enough to leave obvious evidence."

Evelyn's heartbeat quickened.

"For how long?"

Dr. Reeves inhaled slowly.

"Approximately fifteen years."

Amelia closed her eyes.

"My God..."

Someone had been controlling Evelyn's memories since childhood.

Not just manipulating her life.

Manipulating her mind.

Agent Collins suddenly entered carrying another classified file.

"We found financial records."

"Daniel Ashford?"

Collins shook his head.

"Worse."

He placed the folder on the table.

Across the cover were the words:

CARTER FAMILY TRUST

Authorized Signatories.

Richard Carter.

Amelia Carter.

Eleanor Carter.

Then...

A fourth name.

One that froze everyone.

Evelyn Carter.

Beneath it...

Another signature.

Perfectly legal.

Perfectly authenticated.

Perfectly impossible.

Olivia Carter.

Evelyn stared.

"My sister signed this?"

"The document was executed six months ago."

"That's impossible."

"We thought Olivia disappeared fifteen years ago."

Collins nodded.

"So did we."

He looked at Amelia.

"Which means someone has been using Olivia's identity all this time."

That night...

Inside an abandoned chapel hidden in the mountains...

The woman in the white suit lit a single candle.

Daniel entered quietly.

"Everything is ready."

She nodded.

"The Carter sisters will come."

Daniel looked uncertain.

"How can you be sure?"

She smiled.

"Because family always walks into the trap."

She turned toward an old stained-glass window.

Hidden beneath it was the original Carter family crest.

Someone had scratched one sentence into the stone years earlier.

Blood always returns home.

The woman rested her fingers against the inscription.

"They think this war is about money."

A pause.

"It never was."

Daniel watched silently.

"What is it about?"

She looked toward the darkness beyond the chapel doors.

"Inheritance."

"Not of wealth."

"Of responsibility."

Then her eyes grew colder.

"And only one daughter can inherit."

At that same moment...

Evelyn's secure phone vibrated.

An encrypted message appeared.

No sender.

Only a location.

An old Carter estate abandoned fifteen years ago.

Beneath the coordinates...

A single sentence.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO MEET YOUR SISTER.

Evelyn stared at the message.

Amelia reached for the phone.

"It's a trap."

Evelyn nodded.

"I know."

She slipped the phone into her pocket.

"But if Olivia is really there..."

She looked at the faded family photograph still resting in her hand.

"...it's one I'm willing to walk into."

Neither woman noticed the tiny blinking light beneath the phone's battery cover.

A microscopic transmitter.

Activated the moment the message had been opened.

Somewhere far away...

A monitor displayed Evelyn's exact location.

The woman in the white suit smiled.

May you like

"The game begins."
