Chapter 1 – The Daughter They Tried To Erase

THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAVED HER FATHER
Chapter 1 – The Daughter They Tried To Erase
The mansion fell silent after Victor Blackwood’s voice disappeared.
Not a peaceful silence.
A dangerous one.
The kind of silence that came before a storm.
Ethan Blackwood stood in the center of the living room, staring at the black screens mounted on the walls.
The documents Victor had shown were gone.
The cameras were still offline.
The only thing left behind was the echo of his uncle’s words.
"The little girl standing beside you is just another victim of your broken mind."
Ethan looked down.
Lily was holding onto the edge of his jacket.
Her tiny fingers were trembling.
Seven years old.
Only seven.
And yet she had already spent her entire life running from secrets she never created.
Ethan slowly knelt.
“Lily.”
The girl looked up.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“What if he takes me away?”
The question was quiet.
Almost a whisper.
But it hit Ethan harder than any weapon could.
Because seven years ago, he had lost his daughter once.
He refused to lose her again.
“No one is taking you anywhere.”
“But Victor said…”
“I don’t care what Victor said.”
Ethan placed a hand gently on her shoulder.
“You are my daughter.”
Lily stared at him.
“You believe me?”
For a moment, Ethan couldn't speak.
Because the truth was simple.
He had spent seven years believing his daughter was dead.
Seven years visiting a grave that contained nothing but an empty coffin.
Seven years blaming himself.
And now, the child standing in front of him had his wife’s eyes.
Amelia’s eyes.
The same eyes that once looked at him across a hospital room and smiled.
The same eyes that made him promise:
"No matter what happens, protect our family."
Ethan swallowed the pain.
“Yes.”
“I believe you.”
A small tear rolled down Lily’s cheek.
Nobody had believed her for a very long time.
Behind them, Nora remained standing near the dining table.
She looked completely defeated.
The woman who had hidden Lily’s identity for seven years was no longer a cold housekeeper.
She was just someone who had finally been caught by the truth.
Ethan turned.
“Where is Victor?”
Nora looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“He has people everywhere.”
Ethan walked closer.
“My wife was alive for seven years.”
“My daughter lived under a fake identity inside my own house.”
“And you are telling me you don’t know where the man responsible is?”
Nora lowered her head.
“I know where he was planning to go.”
“Where?”
“The Blackwood headquarters.”
Ethan froze.
“The board meeting.”
Nora nodded.
“Tomorrow morning.”
A cold expression appeared on Ethan’s face.
“Of course.”
Victor had planned everything.
The poison.
The fake DNA report.
The public accusation.
The board meeting.
It was never just about killing Ethan.
It was about destroying his reputation first.
Victor didn’t want to be seen as a murderer.
He wanted to be seen as the rightful heir.
Ethan walked toward the security room.
The mansion’s emergency systems were slowly coming back online.
His personal security chief, Marcus Reed, appeared on the monitor.
“Mr. Blackwood.”
“Status?”
“We lost external connection for twelve minutes.”
“Victor?”
“Unknown.”
Ethan’s eyes narrowed.
“Find him.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And Marcus…”
“Yes?”
“Do not contact the police yet.”
The security chief hesitated.
“Sir?”
“If Victor controls enough people, the first report they receive will be his version of the story.”
Marcus understood.
Someone powerful enough to fake a hospital death for seven years would have prepared for every possibility.
“We move quietly.”
Ethan nodded.
“Exactly.”
Two hours later.
The mansion medical room was transformed into a temporary investigation center.
The tea cup sat inside a sealed container.
The fake DNA report was displayed on a large screen.
And Lily sat wrapped in a blanket while Dr. Samuel Hayes examined the evidence.
The doctor looked confused.
“Mr. Blackwood…”
“What?”
“This DNA report is professionally created.”
Ethan looked at him.
“But fake.”
“Yes.”
“How do you know?”
Dr. Hayes adjusted his glasses.
“Because whoever made it had access to a real sample.”
The room became silent.
Ethan slowly turned.
“A real sample?”
“Yes.”
“The result is not completely fabricated.”
Dr. Hayes pointed at the screen.
“They used actual genetic information.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning someone tested Lily before.”
Nora looked frightened.
“Victor.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“He needed proof.”
Dr. Hayes nodded.
“He needed to know whether she was truly your daughter.”
Lily looked confused.
“Why would he need proof?”
Nobody answered immediately.
Because the answer was cruel.
Victor did not fear Ethan.
He feared Lily.
A seven-year-old girl was the only person standing between him and an empire.
Suddenly, Lily spoke.
“Daddy?”
Ethan turned.
“Yes?”
“There was another girl.”
Everyone froze.
“What girl?”
Lily looked down.
“When I was in the dark room.”
Her hands tightened around the blanket.
“There was another little girl there.”
Nora’s face changed.
“Lily…”
Ethan immediately noticed.
“You know about this?”
Nora looked away.
“Tell me.”
The room became heavy.
Nora whispered:
“Victor didn’t only hide Lily.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“What does that mean?”
Nora closed her eyes.
“There were other children.”
A cold feeling moved through Ethan.
“Explain.”
“When Victor discovered the nurse saved Lily, he started searching for anyone who knew.”
“The nurse who rescued her…”
“She had another patient.”
“A little girl.”
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“What happened to her?”
Nora looked at Lily.
“She disappeared.”
Lily whispered:
“She told me her name was Emma.”
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
“Where is Emma now?”
Lily shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“She said Victor was afraid of her.”
“Why?”
The girl looked up.
“Because Emma saw what happened in the hospital.”
Before Ethan could ask another question…
Every light in the mansion suddenly turned off.
The security screens flickered.
Then one image appeared.
A video file.
No signal.
No source.
Just a message.
PLAY ME.
Marcus’s voice came through the emergency speaker.
“Sir, I don’t know how this entered the system.”
Ethan stared at the screen.
“Open it.”
The video began.
A hospital corridor.
Seven years earlier.
Smoke filled the hallway.
People were screaming.
A nurse ran through the chaos carrying a baby.
Then another figure appeared.
A man wearing a black coat.
Ethan moved closer.
Because he recognized the hospital.
The night his family supposedly died.
The video zoomed in.
The man removed his mask.
And Ethan stopped breathing.
It was not Victor.
It was someone else.
Someone he trusted.
Someone who had stood beside him during the funeral.
Someone who had comforted him when he lost Amelia and Lily.
Someone who had told him:
"I’m sorry, Ethan. There was nothing anyone could do."
The screen froze.
A name appeared.
DR. SAMUEL HAYES
Everyone turned.
The doctor went pale.
“No…”
Ethan slowly looked at him.
“Samuel.”
The doctor stepped backward.
“I can explain.”
Ethan’s voice became terrifyingly calm.
“Then you better start.”
Because after seven years…
Ethan Blackwood finally understood one thing.
The fire had never been an accident.
And the people closest to him…
Had been the ones who buried him alive.
