Chapter 6 – The Woman Behind The Fire

THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAVED HER FATHER

Chapter 6 – The Woman Behind The Fire

The man standing outside the Blackwood mansion did not move.

Rain poured down around him.

Lightning flashed across the sky.

For several seconds, nobody inside the security room breathed.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

This was impossible.

Jonathan Blackwood had died fifteen years ago.

Ethan had watched his father’s coffin lowered into the ground.

He had heard the priest speak the final words.

He had stood beside his mother as the world said goodbye.

There was no doubt.

No mistake.

No possibility.

And yet…

There he was.

Alive.

“Open the gate.”

Marcus immediately turned.

“Sir, are you sure?”

Ethan stared at the screen.

“No.”

The answer surprised everyone.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.”

He looked toward Amelia.

His wife understood immediately.

After everything they had discovered, certainty had become dangerous.

The dead could return.

Friends could become enemies.

Family could become strangers.

“Bring him inside.”

The mansion doors opened.

The man walked in slowly.

He was older.

His hair was completely gray.

His face carried years of exhaustion.

But Ethan knew him.

Not from photographs.

Not from memories.

From a lifetime.

“Dad…”

The word came out before Ethan could stop it.

Jonathan Blackwood stopped.

For a moment, his expression broke.

The powerful businessman disappeared.

Only a father remained.

“Ethan.”

Seven years of pain.

Fifteen years of questions.

A lifetime of unfinished conversations.

All came crashing together.

Ethan wanted to run toward him.

He wanted to hug him.

He wanted to believe this was a miracle.

But then he remembered something.

His father had lied.

Everyone had lied.

And lies had almost destroyed his family.

So Ethan stayed still.

“Explain.”

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

“You have questions.”

“I have more than questions.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You let me bury you.”

Jonathan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“You let me believe I lost my father.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe my wife and daughter died.”

A painful silence.

“I tried to stop it.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“But you failed.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Yes.”

Everyone gathered in the living room.

Amelia sat beside Lily.

Marcus stood near the door.

Nobody trusted anyone anymore.

Jonathan looked at Lily.

His eyes filled with emotion.

“So this is her.”

Ethan answered coldly.

“My daughter.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Amelia’s eyes.”

Lily looked confused.

“Are you really my grandfather?”

Jonathan smiled sadly.

“I should have been there when you were born.”

The little girl studied him.

Then asked:

“Why weren’t you?”

Nobody expected the question.

But Jonathan did.

Because children did not care about excuses.

They cared about answers.

And sometimes they asked the hardest questions.

Jonathan looked away.

“Because I was trying to protect you.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“That excuse again.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“You think I wanted this?”

“I think everyone says they are protecting me while they destroy my life.”

The room became silent.

Jonathan accepted the accusation.

Because he deserved it.

“I discovered Victor’s plan before the fire.”

Ethan froze.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you stop him?”

Jonathan looked toward the window.

“Because Victor was not the person I feared.”

Ethan remembered Amelia’s words.

Someone above Victor.

Someone controlling everything.

“Who?”

Jonathan’s face became serious.

“The woman behind the fire.”

Nobody moved.

“The woman?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Victor did not create this plan.”

“He was only a tool.”

Ethan stared.

“Then who controlled him?”

Jonathan reached into his coat.

He removed an old photograph.

A woman.

Young.

Elegant.

Standing beside Ethan’s grandfather.

Amelia immediately recognized her.

“No…”

Ethan turned.

“You know her?”

Amelia looked terrified.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

Amelia whispered:

“Victoria Ashford.”

The name meant nothing to Ethan.

But the fear in Amelia’s voice meant everything.

Jonathan explained.

“Victoria Ashford was once engaged to your grandfather.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

“Before your grandmother.”

“Before the Blackwood empire became what it is today.”

Jonathan placed the photograph on the table.

“She believed the Blackwood family destroyed her future.”

“She spent decades building a revenge plan.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why involve Victor?”

“Because Victor was weak.”

“And Richard?”

“Because Richard was angry.”

“And Samuel?”

Jonathan sighed.

“Because Samuel was afraid.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“And Nora?”

“A pawn.”

The pieces were finally moving into place.

Victor.

Richard.

Samuel.

Nora.

They were not the beginning.

They were only pieces on a board.

“But why my family?”

Jonathan looked at Ethan.

“Because of the inheritance.”

“The bloodline.”

“The company.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

“There’s something else.”

Jonathan became silent.

That silence told Ethan everything.

“You’re hiding something.”

Jonathan looked at Lily.

Then Amelia.

Then Ethan.

Finally he spoke.

“When your grandfather created the inheritance rules…”

“He did not create them because he wanted power.”

“He created them because he was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Jonathan answered:

“That someone would use the Blackwood bloodline to control something far more valuable than the company.”

Ethan frowned.

“What?”

Jonathan looked toward the old documents from Clara.

“The Blackwood family owns something hidden.”

“Something that has been protected for generations.”

Amelia whispered:

“The Blackwood Archive.”

Ethan looked confused.

“What is that?”

Jonathan replied:

“A collection of evidence.”

“Financial records.”

“Political secrets.”

“Deals between powerful families.”

“The kind of information that could destroy governments.”

The room went silent.

Lily looked frightened.

“Why would Victor want that?”

Jonathan’s expression became dark.

“Because whoever controls the archive…”

“Controls everyone.”

Suddenly, Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“We found Thomas.”

Ethan turned.

“Where?”

Marcus swallowed.

“He’s dead.”

Silence.

“When?”

“Approximately two hours ago.”

Ethan frowned.

“Impossible.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Sir…”

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“He left a message.”

A few minutes later, they stood in the security room.

A video file played.

Thomas appeared on the screen.

The old caretaker looked tired.

Afraid.

“Mr. Ethan…”

“If you are watching this…”

“Then they know I betrayed them.”

Ethan listened carefully.

Thomas continued:

“I worked for your family for thirty years.”

“I loved your father.”

“I loved you.”

“But I made one mistake.”

“I trusted the wrong person.”

The video shook.

Thomas looked behind him.

Then whispered:

“The woman behind the fire…”

“Is not Victoria Ashford.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

Thomas continued:

“She wanted revenge.”

“But she was hired by someone else.”

A pause.

The old man looked directly into the camera.

“Mr. Ethan…”

“The person who ordered the fire…”

“Was someone from inside the Blackwood family.”

The screen suddenly went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then Lily quietly asked:

“Daddy…”

Ethan looked at her.

“Who would hurt their own family?”

Ethan had no answer.

Because the terrifying truth was becoming clear.

The enemy was not outside the Blackwood family.

It was born inside it.

At that moment…

A new message appeared on the screen.

No one touched the computer.

No one sent anything.

Just a single sentence:

YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE WRONG PERSON.

Then another line appeared.

ASK YOUR MOTHER.

Everyone slowly turned toward Jonathan.

Because Jonathan’s face had changed.

He was no longer surprised.

He was afraid.

And Ethan saw it.

His father knew.

He knew exactly who the real enemy was.
