Chapter 11 – The Man Who Lost Everything

THE LITTLE GIRL WHO SAVED HER FATHER

Chapter 11 – The Man Who Lost Everything

The rain never stopped.

For three days, the sky above Blackwood City remained gray.

As if the entire world was waiting.

Waiting to see what would happen to one of the most powerful families on Earth.

The Blackwood name had survived wars.

Economic crashes.

Family betrayals.

Generational hatred.

But now the greatest threat was not outside.

It was buried beneath their own history.

And Ethan Blackwood was running out of places to look.

The first thing Ethan did after discovering Project Dawn was simple.

He went back to the beginning.

Not the fire.

Not Victor.

Not Arthur.

The beginning.

The moment someone decided a child could become more valuable than a human life.

The Blackwood archive contained thousands of files.

Most were financial.

Most were business records.

But one section was different.

Hidden.

Encrypted.

Protected by a level of security that even Ethan had never seen.

The title:

PROJECT DAWN

Beneath it:

AUTHORIZED BY: BLACKWOOD FAMILY COUNCIL

Ethan stared.

“Family council?”

Jonathan, standing behind him, looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.”

“You knew about this?”

Jonathan hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Ethan turned.

“Dad.”

Jonathan sighed.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than Ethan expected.

Because every time he believed he had reached the bottom of the truth…

There was another layer underneath.

“What was Project Dawn?”

Jonathan looked at the screen.

“Your grandfather created it.”

“For what?”

“To protect the Blackwood legacy.”

Ethan shook his head.

“That answer is not enough.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Project Dawn was created to identify the strongest continuation of the Blackwood bloodline.”

Ethan frowned.

“Continuation?”

Jonathan nodded.

“The family believed certain genetic traits were important.”

“Leadership.”

“Memory.”

“Decision-making.”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“You are talking about children.”

Jonathan looked away.

“Yes.”

“And you let this happen?”

“No.”

Jonathan’s voice became stronger.

“I fought against it.”

“But?”

“But I was too late.”

The file opened.

Inside were medical records.

Birth records.

Genetic analysis.

Names.

Hundreds of pages.

Then Ethan saw it.

A document dated seven years ago.

SUBJECT: LILY BLACKWOOD

His heart stopped.

He opened it.

The words appeared:

GENETIC COMPATIBILITY: EXCEPTIONAL

MEMORY RESPONSE: UNUSUAL

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT: ABOVE EXPECTATION

Ethan stared.

“She was a baby.”

Jonathan nodded.

“I know.”

“They tested my daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Without our permission?”

Jonathan did not answer.

Ethan’s anger grew.

“Who?”

Jonathan whispered:

“Dr. Elena Voss.”

Everything connected.

Elena.

Victor.

The fire.

The missing records.

The fake identities.

But there was still one question.

Why Lily?

Why was one child worth destroying an entire family?

Amelia entered the room.

She had been silent for several minutes.

Ethan noticed.

“You knew.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

His face changed.

“When?”

“Before the fire.”

The words hurt.

“Amelia.”

She stepped closer.

“I found out when I was pregnant.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Not again.

Another secret.

Another person trying to protect him through lies.

Amelia touched his hand.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“But Elena threatened me.”

“What did she say?”

Amelia’s voice trembled.

“She said if I refused…”

“She would make sure Lily never survived birth.”

The room went silent.

Seven years earlier.

Amelia had discovered the truth.

Lily was not only Ethan’s daughter.

She was the child Project Dawn had been searching for.

A perfect genetic match.

The child who could unlock the final Blackwood archive.

But Amelia refused.

She refused to let her daughter become a tool.

So Elena created a plan.

A fire.

A disappearance.

A new identity.

A world where Lily would never exist.

Ethan looked at Lily.

She was drawing quietly in the corner.

A normal child.

Or at least…

A child who deserved a normal life.

He walked toward her.

“Lily.”

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?”

He sat beside her.

“Do you remember anything from the hospital?”

The girl became quiet.

A long silence.

Then:

“Only one thing.”

“What?”

“A woman.”

Ethan froze.

“What woman?”

“She came to see me.”

“When?”

“Before Aunt Nora took me.”

“What did she say?”

Lily looked afraid.

“She said…”

The girl swallowed.

“She said I was the answer.”

Ethan’s blood ran cold.

“The answer to what?”

Lily shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

At that moment…

The prison phone rang.

Victor Blackwood picked up.

He expected his lawyer.

Instead, he heard a woman’s voice.

“Victor.”

His face changed.

“Impossible.”

A soft laugh.

“You always say that.”

Victor stood.

“Where are you?”

“You failed.”

Victor clenched his fist.

“You promised me the company.”

“No.”

The woman corrected.

“I promised you power.”

A pause.

“You were never supposed to win.”

Victor’s expression changed.

“What?”

“You were only useful until Ethan opened the archive.”

Silence.

Victor finally understood.

He had been manipulated too.

All these years.

The man who thought he controlled the game…

Was only another piece.

“Who are you?”

The woman answered:

“You know exactly who I am.”

Then the call ended.

Minutes later, Victor requested an emergency meeting with Ethan.

Everyone was surprised.

Especially Ethan.

“Why would he want to talk?”

Marcus answered:

“Maybe because he knows something.”

Ethan knew.

People like Victor did not confess because they regretted their actions.

They confessed because they wanted something.

But there was one reason Ethan agreed.

Because Victor was afraid.

And fear revealed truths.

The prison interview room was cold.

Victor sat across from Ethan.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man who had lost everything.

Ethan sat down.

“You wanted to talk.”

Victor looked at him.

“I made mistakes.”

Ethan said nothing.

Victor continued:

“I thought I was the player.”

“But I was never the player.”

“Who was?”

Victor looked directly at him.

“Your mother.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

Victor smiled sadly.

“The woman who taught you kindness.”

“The woman who hid the truth.”

“The woman who knew everything.”

“No.”

Victor leaned closer.

“Eleanor Blackwood knew about Project Dawn.”

“She knew about Lily.”

“She knew about Elena Voss.”

“And she knew…”

Victor paused.

“The fire was coming.”

Ethan stood.

“You’re lying.”

Victor shook his head.

“I wish I was.”

“Why would my mother allow that?”

Victor looked at him.

“Because she believed one child had to be sacrificed.”

Silence.

“One child?”

Victor whispered:

“She knew there was another baby.”

Ethan felt his heart stop.

“What are you saying?”

Victor answered:

“Lily was never the only child born that night.”

The room went silent.

Again.

Another child.

Another secret.

Ethan stared.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the window.

Then said:

“The child Elena Voss took.”

Ethan returned to the mansion that night with one thought.

His entire life had been built around protecting his family.

But now he discovered something terrifying.

His family had been hiding the truth from him.

Not because they hated him.

Because they were afraid.

When Ethan entered the house, Lily ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

He caught her.

Held her tightly.

But his eyes moved toward the darkness behind her.

Because someone was standing there.

A woman.

Watching.

Waiting.

Dr. Elena Voss.

She smiled.

“Hello, Ethan.”

He froze.

“How did you get in?”

She ignored the question.

She looked at Lily.

“So…”

“After all these years…”

“The first Dawn child is finally home.”

Ethan stepped between them.

“Stay away from my daughter.”

Elena smiled.

“That is exactly what everyone said.”

“And yet…”

She looked at Lily.

“Everyone wanted her.”
