Chapter 12 — The Woman Daniel Betrayed Twice

Chapter 12 — The Woman Daniel Betrayed Twice

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The man standing beneath the emergency light looked exactly like my father.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly.

Same gray eyes.

Same narrow jaw.

Same scar above his left eyebrow.

The scar I remembered from childhood.

The scar I had touched when I was seven after he fell from a horse.

The scar I had seen in photographs taken years after that.

My knees nearly gave way.

“Dad?”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Jennifer.”

My mother stepped in front of me.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“You always were dramatic, Eleanor.”

My mother's face collapsed.

I had never seen her look afraid before.

Not of Richard.

Not of Margaret.

Not even when the warehouse was attacked.

But now…

she was terrified.

“Victor,” she whispered.

He smiled.

“It's been eleven years.”

I stared at him.

“But you're dead.”

“Yes.”

“You were buried.”

“Yes.”

“I saw your coffin.”

He nodded.

“A very convincing coffin.”

My head spun.

“You let me believe you were dead?”

His expression hardened.

“I let everyone believe it.”

“Why?”

“Because it was the only way to protect the bloodline.”

I laughed.

It sounded broken.

“You keep saying that.”

He looked at me.

“You don't understand what you're carrying.”

I stared back.

“My daughter.”

“No.”

His eyes shifted toward the laboratory.

“The future.”

My mother grabbed my wrist.

“Jennifer, don't listen to him.”

Victor laughed.

“Still lying to her?”

My mother flinched.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

“I know everything.”

He looked at me.

“More than you do.”

I stepped between them.

“Enough.”

They both went silent.

I looked at Victor.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I will.”

“Everything.”

“Yes.”

“No more secrets.”

He smiled.

“Then we'll begin with Daniel.”

My stomach tightened.

“What about him?”

“You believe he betrayed you because he loved Chloe.”

I nodded slowly.

“That wasn't the whole story.”

“I know.”

“You think he betrayed you because Richard threatened him.”

“Yes.”

“That wasn't the whole story either.”

I felt cold.

“Then what did he do?”

Victor's eyes hardened.

“He betrayed you twice.”

I couldn't speak.

“First, he betrayed your marriage.”

“Yes.”

“Second, he betrayed your bloodline.”

“What does that mean?”

Victor walked toward the laboratory table.

He picked up one of the old files.

“Daniel didn't merely agree to marry you.”

“He was assigned to you.”

I stared.

“What?”

“Your marriage was planned.”

“No.”

“It was.”

“By whom?”

“Your father.”

I looked at my mother.

She closed her eyes.

“Is that true?”

She whispered:

“Yes.”

My entire body went numb.

I remembered Daniel's first words to me.

His first date.

His first kiss.

His proposal.

Our wedding.

Our honeymoon.

Every moment I had believed was spontaneous.

Every moment I had believed belonged to us.

And now someone was telling me that the entire relationship had been engineered.

“Why?”

Victor answered.

“Because your father needed someone close enough to protect you.”

“So Daniel was my bodyguard?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“A monitor.”

I stared.

“He was supposed to report your movements.”

“To whom?”

“Your father.”

My mother interrupted.

“Victor, stop.”

He ignored her.

“He reported everything.”

“Everything?”

“Who you met.”

“Where you went.”

“What you bought.”

“Who you trusted.”

“What you knew.”

I felt sick.

“And he married me.”

“Yes.”

“Because my father told him to?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my mother.

“Did you know?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

I stepped backward.

“You both destroyed my life.”

“No,” my mother whispered.

“We were trying to save it.”

I turned toward her.

“You don't get to call that saving.”

Victor placed another file on the table.

“This is Daniel's original contract.”

I opened it.

The title made my hands shake.

PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION AGREEMENT.

Underneath:

Subject: Jennifer Carter

Assigned Agent: Daniel Carter

Duration: Indefinite

I read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

My marriage certificate was attached.

So was a photograph of Daniel from before we met.

He was standing beside my father.

They were shaking hands.

I stared at it.

“Daniel knew.”

“Yes.”

“He knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“He knew my father.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“He knew about the genetic program.”

“Yes.”

“He knew I was being watched.”

“Yes.”

“And he still married me.”

“Yes.”

My hands began trembling.

“Why did he never tell me?”

Victor looked at me.

“Because the contract prohibited disclosure.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So he was trapped.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“No.”

“What?”

“He was paid.”

I stared at him.

“How much?”

“Five million dollars.”

The number hit me like a slap.

“Five million to marry me?”

“No.”

“To protect you.”

“And what did he receive afterward?”

Victor didn't answer.

My mother did.

“Another twenty million.”

I closed my eyes.

The room seemed to spin.

“So our marriage…”

“Started as a transaction,” Victor said.

I looked down at the photograph.

Daniel's young face.

The man I had loved.

The man I had trusted.

The man who had slept beside me while secretly reporting my life.

I thought of all the times he had asked:

Where are you going?

Who are you meeting?

Why are you late?

Why did you talk to that person?

At the time, I had called it concern.

Now I understood.

It had been surveillance.

“But he eventually loved me.”

Victor said nothing.

I looked at him.

“Didn't he?”

“He did.”

My mother's voice was quiet.

“Daniel fell in love with you.”

“Then why did he betray me?”

“Because the second betrayal was different.”

I looked at her.

“What second betrayal?”

She hesitated.

“Lily.”

My heart tightened.

“What did he do?”

Victor answered.

“He knew Lily wasn't his.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“He knew before Lily was born.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He knew the embryo wasn't created from his genetic material.”

“But he thought…”

“He knew.”

“Then why did he tell me Lily was his?”

“Because Richard offered him a deal.”

“What deal?”

Victor's eyes became cold.

“Your freedom.”

I couldn't understand.

“My freedom?”

“Richard told Daniel that if he kept the truth hidden, you would be allowed to live.”

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if you understand the inheritance.”

I stared at him.

“Explain.”

“The trust contained a clause.”

“What clause?”

“Any unauthorized disclosure of the genetic program would trigger a succession crisis.”

“And?”

“Your father believed someone inside the family would try to eliminate you.”

“Richard.”

“Yes.”

“So Daniel was supposed to protect me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would Richard offer him my freedom?”

“Because Richard didn't need you dead.”

I frowned.

“He needed you controllable.”

“How?”

“Through your children.”

I felt a chill.

“Lily.”

“Lily.”

“Emma.”

“Emma.”

“They were leverage.”

“Yes.”

My mother sat down.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“After Daniel was arrested.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because Richard still had access to the trust.”

I stared at her.

“And now?”

“Now he doesn't.”

Victor laughed.

“You still don't understand.”

I turned toward him.

“What?”

“Richard was never the most dangerous man.”

My stomach tightened.

“You.”

He smiled.

“Yes.”

“You manipulated Daniel.”

“No.”

“You manipulated my marriage.”

“No.”

“You manipulated my mother.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Victor stepped closer.

“I created the conditions.”

I stared.

“For what?”

“For you to become exactly who you are.”

I didn't understand.

He continued.

“Your father wanted to protect the empire.”

“Your mother wanted to protect you.”

“Richard wanted the money.”

“Daniel wanted freedom.”

“And you?”

He smiled.

“You wanted love.”

My chest tightened.

“And that made you the easiest person to manipulate.”

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the laboratory.

Nobody moved.

Victor slowly turned his face back toward me.

I expected anger.

Instead, he smiled.

“Good.”

“What?”

“Now you're finally acting like my daughter.”

I hated him.

In that moment, I hated him more than I had ever hated anyone.

Not because he had lied.

But because he had turned my entire life into a game.

Then the laboratory doors opened.

Rebecca rushed inside.

“Jennifer!”

“What happened?”

“The court has issued an emergency order.”

“Again?”

“This time it's serious.”

She handed me a document.

“Daniel's assets are being transferred.”

“To whom?”

“An unknown trust.”

My stomach dropped.

“Richard?”

“No.”

“Margaret?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Rebecca pointed at the signature.

Victor Carter.

I looked at my father.

“You're transferring Daniel's assets?”

He nodded.

“They were never Daniel's.”

“They were stolen from me.”

“Yes.”

“Then give them back.”

“No.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because you don't understand what they represent.”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

He leaned closer.

“Daniel stole your money.”

“Richard stole your father's company.”

“Margaret stole your identity.”

“And I…”

He paused.

“I stole your future.”

Silence.

My mother started crying.

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

Victor answered.

“It means Lily was never supposed to be born.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“She was supposed to be destroyed.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“Because the embryo carried a genetic sequence that could expose everything.”

“Then why was she born?”

Victor looked at me.

“Because Daniel disobeyed me.”

I froze.

“Daniel saved her?”

“Yes.”

“He saved Lily?”

“Yes.”

“And that was the second betrayal?”

“No.”

Victor's voice became colder.

“That was the only thing Daniel did right.”

My mind raced.

“Then what did he betray?”

Victor opened another file.

Inside were photographs.

Daniel meeting Richard.

Daniel meeting Margaret.

Daniel meeting a doctor.

Daniel holding an envelope.

And then…

a photograph of Daniel entering a fertility clinic.

The date was six months before Lily was born.

I stared.

“What is this?”

“He altered the embryo.”

My blood ran cold.

“Why?”

“To make Lily genetically different.”

“Different from what?”

“From you.”

I looked at the report.

“No.”

Victor nodded.

“Daniel secretly substituted another genetic sample.”

“Whose?”

He didn't answer.

“Whose?”

Victor finally said:

“Chloe's.”

I felt the world tilt.

“You're saying…”

“Lily wasn't created from your egg.”

“But the test said…”

“Fake.”

“Then whose egg?”

“Chloe's.”

My breath caught.

Chloe was standing behind me.

She looked horrified.

“No.”

Victor looked at her.

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“I never…”

“You signed the consent form.”

“I didn't know what I was signing.”

“You were drugged.”

Her face went white.

“What?”

“Daniel arranged it.”

She turned toward me.

“Jennifer…”

I couldn't speak.

The woman I had hated.

The woman I had blamed.

The woman who had carried Emma.

Had unknowingly contributed genetic material to Lily.

Two children.

One biological mother.

And none of us had known.

I looked at Victor.

“Why would Daniel do that?”

“Because he wanted Lily to be legally connected to you but biologically disconnected.”

“Why?”

“So Richard couldn't use her.”

“But that doesn't make sense.”

“It does.”

Victor pointed toward the trust documents.

“The trust recognized biological descendants.”

“So?”

“Richard had access to your DNA.”

My heart stopped.

“He could create another child.”

“Yes.”

“Then Daniel changed Lily's DNA.”

“Yes.”

“To protect her.”

“Yes.”

I whispered:

“Then why did he steal from me?”

Victor's expression hardened.

“Because he needed money to keep the operation alive.”

“What operation?”

“The one that protected Lily.”

I stared.

“Daniel wasn't stealing for Richard.”

“No.”

“He was stealing to hide Lily.”

“Yes.”

“And Chloe?”

“Was the cover.”

I turned toward Chloe.

She was crying.

“I never knew.”

I believed her.

For the first time…

I did.

Then Rebecca interrupted.

“Jennifer.”

I looked at her.

“We have another problem.”

“What now?”

“The court just received a new DNA filing.”

“From whom?”

She hesitated.

“Daniel.”

I frowned.

“What does he claim?”

Rebecca handed me the document.

I read the first sentence.

My hands went cold.

“I, Daniel Carter, formally deny biological paternity of Lily Carter.”

I looked up.

“He's denying Lily?”

“No.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Read the next page.”

I did.

Then I stopped breathing.

Daniel had named the biological father.

A name I knew.

A name that should never have appeared there.

Alexander Vale.

I looked toward Alexander.

He was standing in the doorway.

His face had gone pale.

I whispered:

“Alexander?”

He didn't answer.

Daniel's statement continued.

“Lily Carter is not my biological daughter.”

“She is the biological daughter of Alexander Vale and Chloe Morgan.”

I looked at Chloe.

She covered her mouth.

Alexander stepped backward.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

I saw genuine fear in his eyes.

Not guilt.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Because if Daniel's claim was true…

then the entire bloodline had been wrong.

The trust.

The inheritance.

Emma.

Lily.

Everything.

And somewhere inside that chaos, one final question emerged.

Why had Daniel betrayed me twice?

The answer was no longer about Chloe.

It wasn't even about money.

May you like

It was about a child whose true father could destroy the entire empire.

And Daniel had just named him.
