Chapter 6 — The Mother-in-Law Who Chose Chloe

Chapter 6 — The Mother-in-Law Who Chose Chloe
By Friday morning, everyone believed I had betrayed Daniel.
That was exactly what Margaret wanted.
She started with a photograph.
One photograph was all it took.
A picture of me standing beside Chloe outside the fertility clinic.
No context.
No explanation.
Just me.
Chloe.
And the caption beneath it:
“Jennifer Carter exposed for secretly meeting her husband's mistress.”
By eight o'clock, the photograph had spread through Daniel's family.
By nine, his mother had sent it to every relative she could reach.
By ten, people were calling me a liar.
And by eleven, Margaret appeared on television.
She sat beneath studio lights wearing a pale blue suit, pearl earrings, and the expression of a grieving mother.
She looked perfect.
Controlled.
Heartbroken.
She looked like a woman defending her innocent son against a cruel wife.
“I don't want to attack Jennifer,” Margaret told the interviewer.
Her voice trembled.
“She was once like a daughter to me.”
I watched from my apartment.
Sarah stood beside me.
“She's good,” Sarah said.
I didn't answer.
Margaret continued.
“But after everything Daniel has endured, I can no longer remain silent.”
The interviewer leaned forward.
“What has he endured?”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“Betrayal.”
My jaw tightened.
“Jennifer has been meeting Chloe in secret.”
The interviewer looked shocked.
“Daniel's former mistress?”
Margaret nodded.
“Yes.”
“She claims she's investigating financial misconduct.”
Margaret gave a sad smile.
“That's what she says.”
Then came the sentence designed to destroy me.
“But I believe Jennifer has been working with Chloe from the beginning.”
Sarah muted the television.
“She just accused you of conspiring with the woman who had an affair with your husband.”
I stared at the screen.
“No.”
Sarah looked at me.
“No?”
“She isn't trying to destroy me.”
“Then what is she doing?”
I looked at the photograph.
“She's trying to make me look like the reason everything happened.”
Margaret had always known how to manipulate a room.
During my marriage, she had used small humiliations.
Comments at dinner.
Questions about my clothes.
Jokes about my family.
Little reminders that I was never quite good enough.
But this was different.
She wasn't trying to embarrass me.
She was building a case.
A public narrative.
Jennifer was unstable.
Jennifer was jealous.
Jennifer had conspired with Chloe.
Jennifer was stealing money.
Jennifer had tried to destroy Daniel's reputation.
And if she could make enough people believe it…
the truth wouldn't matter.
I opened my laptop.
“Find everything Margaret has said.”
Sarah nodded.
Within an hour, we had thirty-seven statements.
Television interviews.
Social media posts.
Family messages.
Anonymous tips.
Even a statement from one of Daniel's former employees.
Every story said the same thing.
I had become obsessed with Chloe.
I had manipulated Daniel.
I had taken money.
I had threatened his family.
And worst of all…
I had supposedly tried to keep Daniel away from Lily.
Sarah looked at me.
“She's building a victim profile.”
“For Daniel.”
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
Sarah frowned.
“What?”
“She's building one for Chloe.”
At noon, Margaret released another statement.
This time, she announced that Chloe would be moving into the family estate.
I stared at the screen.
“She did what?”
Sarah read it again.
“Margaret says Chloe and Emma need protection.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Protection from whom?”
“From you, apparently.”
The statement continued:
“As a grandmother, I cannot stand by while an innocent mother and child are targeted by Jennifer Carter.”
I stared at the words.
“Grandmother.”
Sarah nodded.
“She has publicly accepted Chloe.”
“And Emma?”
“Her granddaughter.”
I felt something inside me crack.
Margaret had never held Emma.
She had never changed her diaper.
She had never heard her cry.
She didn't even know her.
Yet she was claiming her publicly.
Why?
The answer came five minutes later.
A financial journalist posted an old document.
A trust amendment.
Margaret's name appeared on it.
Sarah enlarged the image.
“Look.”
I read the clause.
My heart stopped.
“If Daniel Carter's marriage to Jennifer Carter is legally dissolved, custody of any minor child associated with the Carter family trust shall be subject to family review.”
I stared at the document.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Margaret wants custody.”
“Of Lily?”
“Possibly.”
I looked at her.
“And Emma.”
Sarah nodded.
“She wants both.”
That evening, Margaret came to my apartment.
She didn't come alone.
Two lawyers stood behind her.
She knocked once.
Then entered without waiting.
“You've caused enough damage.”
I stared at her.
“Get out.”
She smiled.
“Still pretending to be innocent?”
“I don't pretend.”
“You met Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“You accepted money from her.”
“No.”
“You coordinated with her.”
“No.”
“You've been manipulating Daniel.”
“No.”
Margaret's expression hardened.
“Then why did you meet her?”
“To protect my children.”
She laughed.
“Your children?”
“Yes.”
“She isn't your daughter.”
I knew immediately what she meant.
Emma.
Margaret continued.
“Everyone knows Chloe is Emma's mother.”
I looked at her.
“Biologically?”
She hesitated.
“That's irrelevant.”
“No.”
“It isn't.”
Margaret stepped closer.
“You've become obsessed with DNA.”
“I've become obsessed with the truth.”
“You destroyed my son.”
“No.”
“You destroyed his business.”
“No.”
“You emptied his accounts.”
“I froze stolen funds.”
“You humiliated him.”
“He humiliated himself.”
Her face reddened.
Then she whispered:
“You will regret this.”
I smiled.
“I already regret marrying him.”
One of the lawyers placed a document on my table.
“What is that?”
“A custody proposal.”
I didn't touch it.
Margaret spoke.
“Daniel believes you are emotionally unstable.”
I laughed.
“Of course he does.”
“He believes Chloe is better equipped to care for Emma.”
I looked at her.
“Chloe is not Emma's biological mother.”
Margaret's expression changed.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“DNA testing.”
Silence.
One of the lawyers looked at Margaret.
She had not expected that.
I continued.
“Emma is my biological daughter.”
Margaret stared at me.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You're lying.”
“I have the report.”
She looked at the lawyer.
Then back at me.
“Daniel told us otherwise.”
“Daniel lies.”
Margaret's face became pale.
“You don't understand what you're doing.”
“I understand exactly what I'm doing.”
I picked up the document.
Then tore it in half.
Margaret stared.
“You cannot do that.”
“I just did.”
She turned toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Jennifer.”
I looked at her.
“You think this is about money.”
“Isn't it?”
“No.”
She turned.
“This is about Daniel's life.”
I laughed softly.
“You mean his empire.”
She didn't answer.
“Your son stole from his own daughter.”
“He was protecting the family.”
“He transferred $1.2 million.”
“He was protecting the trust.”
“He lied about Lily.”
“He was trying to protect you.”
“He used Chloe.”
“He loved her.”
“He used me.”
Margaret's expression finally broke.
For one second, I saw fear.
Real fear.
Then it disappeared.
“You don't know everything.”
I stepped closer.
“Neither do you.”
She left.
That night, Chloe called.
“Jennifer.”
“What happened?”
“I need to warn you.”
“About what?”
“Margaret.”
I sat down.
“What about her?”
“She came to see me.”
“When?”
“Yesterday.”
“What did she want?”
“She offered me money.”
“How much?”
“$200,000.”
I went silent.
“For what?”
“To leave.”
“Leave where?”
“Anywhere.”
“And Emma?”
“She said I could take Emma.”
My stomach tightened.
“What else?”
“She said if I signed a statement saying you manipulated Daniel…”
I understood.
“They would give you the money.”
“Yes.”
“And you refused.”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
“Why?”
Chloe's voice trembled.
“Because I finally understand what Daniel did.”
The next morning, Chloe sent me the statement.
It was six pages.
Every accusation was false.
Every detail had been constructed.
And at the bottom was a signature line.
Mine.
Except I had never signed it.
I stared at the document.
“Forgery.”
Sarah nodded.
“They're preparing evidence against you.”
“Who?”
“Daniel.”
“Margaret?”
“Probably both.”
I looked at the signature.
Then I noticed something.
The signature was almost perfect.
Almost.
But there was one difference.
The real signature always ended with a small upward curve.
This one didn't.
I smiled.
“It's fake.”
Sarah nodded.
“We can prove it.”
Then the doorbell rang.
A courier stood outside.
He handed me an envelope.
“Jennifer Carter?”
“Yes.”
“Legal delivery.”
I signed.
Opened it.
My heart sank.
It was a lawsuit.
Daniel was suing me.
For defamation.
Financial misconduct.
Emotional abuse.
Interference with business.
And—most absurdly—attempted parental alienation.
Sarah read the final page.
“He's asking for sole custody of Lily.”
I froze.
“Not Emma?”
“Not yet.”
I understood.
Daniel still needed to establish legal paternity first.
Lily was the child everyone believed was his.
Emma was the child he didn't want publicly connected to me.
For now.
At noon, Margaret held a press conference.
She stood beside Daniel.
Beside Chloe.
And beside Emma.
I watched the livestream.
Margaret placed one hand on Chloe's shoulder.
“This young woman has suffered enough.”
Chloe looked uncomfortable.
Margaret continued.
“She has been attacked by a woman who cannot accept that her marriage is over.”
Daniel looked directly into the camera.
“I never wanted to hurt Jennifer.”
I laughed.
Sarah muted it.
But then Margaret said something that made me stop.
“We are prepared to provide DNA evidence.”
Sarah unmuted the television.
“What DNA evidence?”
Margaret smiled.
“Evidence proving that Jennifer is not Emma's mother.”
My heart stopped.
“That isn't possible.”
Sarah looked at me.
“Unless…”
“Unless what?”
“Unless they have falsified another test.”
I watched Daniel.
He wasn't smiling.
He looked terrified.
Not confident.
Terrified.
That was when I knew.
Margaret had just made a mistake.
A huge one.
Because Daniel knew Emma was my biological daughter.
So why would his mother publicly claim otherwise?
Unless she knew something we didn't.
That evening, I received another message.
From an unknown number.
You need to stop trusting Chloe.
I stared at it.
Another message arrived.
She hasn't told you everything.
Then a photograph.
Chloe.
Standing beside Margaret.
At a private hospital.
Three years earlier.
I zoomed in.
Chloe was pregnant.
But that wasn't what frightened me.
Beside her stood a doctor.
The same doctor whose name appeared on the embryo transfer records.
And behind them…
was Margaret.
I stared at the photograph.
Sarah whispered:
“What is that?”
“I don't know.”
Then another message arrived.
Ask Chloe who paid for her first fertility procedure.
I looked at Sarah.
“We need to see Chloe.”
She arrived thirty minutes later.
I showed her the photograph.
Her face went white.
“Where did you get this?”
“Who paid for your fertility procedure?”
She said nothing.
“Chloe.”
“I didn't know.”
“Who paid?”
She began crying.
“Margaret.”
I stared at her.
“When?”
“Before I ever met Daniel again.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“No.”
“Then tell me.”
She wiped her tears.
“She approached me.”
“Why?”
“She said she knew about my divorce.”
“And?”
“She offered to help me.”
“Why?”
“She said she wanted to help a woman become a mother.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did she know you would meet Daniel?”
“No.”
“Did she know about the embryo?”
“No.”
“Did she know you were pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Chloe looked at me.
“Because she arranged the pregnancy.”
Silence.
I felt the room disappear.
“What?”
“Margaret arranged everything.”
“The clinic?”
“Yes.”
“The embryo?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel?”
“No.”
I stared at her.
“Then why?”
Chloe began sobbing.
“Because Margaret wanted a grandchild.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn't explain anything.”
“She believed you would never give her one.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
“She knew about your father's condition.”
“What condition?”
“She believed you were infertile.”
I looked at Sarah.
Then back at Chloe.
“And the embryo?”
Chloe whispered:
“Margaret chose it.”
My heart pounded.
“Whose embryo?”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I don't know.”
“Tell me.”
“I only saw the file once.”
“What did it say?”
She hesitated.
“Jennifer Carter.”
I froze.
“What?”
“The embryo was labeled with your name.”
I stared at her.
“But I never consented.”
“I know.”
“Then how?”
Chloe looked at me.
“Your mother.”
My blood went cold.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“She signed something.”
“What?”
“I don't know.”
Sarah stood.
“We need that file.”
Chloe nodded.
“I know where it is.”
“Where?”
She looked toward the door.
“At Margaret's house.”
That night, we entered Margaret's estate.
Not through the front door.
Through the old service entrance.
Chloe knew the house.
She led us upstairs.
Past the guest rooms.
Past the family portraits.
To a locked study.
She pulled a key from her pocket.
“You had this?”
“Margaret gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“I think she wants us to find something.”
Sarah looked at me.
“That could be a trap.”
“It probably is.”
I opened the door anyway.
Inside were dozens of files.
Medical records.
Financial records.
Trust documents.
Photographs.
I searched until I found a folder marked:
PROJECT LILY.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
The first page contained my name.
The second contained my mother's signature.
The third contained a medical consent form.
And the fourth…
was a photograph of an embryo identification record.
I stared at the number.
Then at the date.
My knees weakened.
Because the embryo had been created before I ever met Daniel.
And beside the embryo number was a handwritten note.
Three words.
“Do not implant.”
Below it was another handwriting.
Margaret's.
“Not yet.”
I turned the page.
A final document was attached.
My father's signature.
My heart stopped.
It contained one sentence.
If my daughter is ever placed in danger, the embryo must remain frozen until the truth about Daniel Carter is exposed.
I looked at Chloe.
Then Sarah.
Neither spoke.
Because suddenly the entire story had changed.
Margaret had not created this secret.
My father had.
Daniel had discovered it.
My mother had helped hide it.
Chloe had been pulled into it.
And Margaret had spent years trying to control the outcome.
Then Sarah pointed at the bottom of the document.
“There.”
I looked.
A beneficiary name.
Not Jennifer.
Not Daniel.
Not Lily.
Not Emma.
A name I had never seen before.
Alexander Carter.
I stared at it.
“Who is Alexander Carter?”
Chloe whispered:
“I don't know.”
Then the lights in the house went out.
The door slammed shut behind us.
And from somewhere in the darkness…
May you like
a man's voice said:
“You were never supposed to find that file.”
