Chapter 7 — The Recording Jennifer Kept Hidden

Chapter 7 — The Recording Jennifer Kept Hidden
The voice came from behind the door.
“You were never supposed to find that file.”
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then Chloe screamed.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
The lights remained off.
I could hear someone breathing in the hallway.
Slow.
Controlled.
Close.
I reached for my phone.
Before I could turn on the flashlight, the door opened.
A beam of light swept across the room.
Then a man stepped inside.
He wasn't Daniel.
He wasn't Richard.
And he wasn't anyone I recognized.
He wore a dark coat.
His face was older than Daniel's.
Harder.
But there was something familiar about him.
His eyes.
The shape of his jaw.
The slight scar beside his left eyebrow.
I stared.
“Who are you?”
He didn't answer.
Instead, he looked directly at the file in my hands.
“You should put that down.”
I tightened my grip.
“No.”
His expression changed.
“You don't understand what you're holding.”
“Then explain it.”
He took one step forward.
Sarah moved between us.
“Stay where you are.”
The man stopped.
Then he smiled.
“Sarah Bennett.”
She froze.
“You know me?”
“I know everyone who has been working against Daniel.”
I looked at him.
“Who are you?”
He finally answered.
“Alexander.”
My heart stopped.
The name from the document.
Alexander Carter.
I stared at him.
“You're Alexander Carter.”
“Yes.”
“Who are you to my family?”
His expression darkened.
“That's the question your father spent twenty years trying to prevent you from asking.”
I couldn't move.
“Are you related to my father?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
He looked at me.
“I'm his son.”
Silence.
Chloe covered her mouth.
Sarah whispered:
“Your brother?”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“His first son.”
My stomach turned.
My father had never mentioned a son.
Not once.
Not in photographs.
Not in letters.
Not in family stories.
Nothing.
“You're lying.”
“I expected you to say that.”
“Where were you?”
“Everywhere.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“No.”
He took another step.
“I was the person your father used when he needed something done quietly.”
“Something like what?”
“Protecting you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone says they were protecting me.”
Alexander's eyes hardened.
“Then listen to the recording.”
He reached inside his coat.
I instinctively stepped back.
He removed a small recorder.
Then placed it on the desk.
“You've been hiding something too.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“The recording you made of Daniel.”
I said nothing.
His smile disappeared.
“I know about it.”
For a moment, the room was silent.
Sarah looked at me.
“You recorded him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before the baptism.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wasn't sure what it contained.”
Alexander looked at me.
“You should listen to it.”
I shook my head.
“I already know what Daniel did.”
“No.”
His voice became serious.
“You know what he wanted you to believe.”
“That isn't the same thing.”
“No.”
He pressed the recorder.
A voice filled the room.
Daniel.
But not the confident Daniel everyone knew.
This voice was exhausted.
Frightened.
And desperate.
“If she finds out, everything is over.”
I felt my heart pound.
Then another voice.
My mother.
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
Daniel answered.
“I never planned to hurt Jennifer.”
My mother's voice trembled.
“You transferred the embryo without her consent.”
Daniel went silent.
Then:
“Because her father left me no choice.”
I froze.
The recording continued.
My mother:
“You could have told her.”
Daniel:
“And then she would have left.”
My mother:
“Maybe she should.”
Daniel:
“If she leaves, the trust collapses.”
My blood ran cold.
My mother whispered:
“You care more about the trust than my daughter.”
Daniel answered:
“I care about surviving.”
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Alexander.
“Where did you get this?”
He didn't answer.
“Who recorded it?”
“You did.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“You left your phone recording that night.”
I remembered.
The night I had confronted Daniel about Chloe.
I had placed my phone on the kitchen counter.
I thought I was recording a conversation for my lawyer.
I had forgotten about it.
Until now.
Alexander continued.
“You didn't realize the recording kept running after you left.”
Sarah looked stunned.
“And you obtained it how?”
“Your cloud account.”
I narrowed my eyes.
“You hacked me?”
“No.”
He reached into the folder.
“Your father gave me access years ago.”
I stared at him.
“He was preparing for this.”
“Yes.”
“For what?”
“For the day Daniel's lies became impossible to hide.”
I played the recording again.
This time, I listened carefully.
There was something underneath Daniel's words.
A detail I had missed.
At the very end, just before the recording stopped, another voice appeared.
Male.
Older.
Calm.
“You have thirty days.”
Daniel replied:
“I need more time.”
The older man answered:
“You have thirty days, or Jennifer learns everything.”
Then the recording ended.
I looked at Alexander.
“Who was that?”
He didn't answer.
“Alexander.”
He looked away.
“Your father.”
My heart stopped.
“My father was there?”
“Yes.”
“But he was already dead.”
“Not then.”
I felt the room tilt.
“When was this recorded?”
“Four years ago.”
Four years.
My marriage.
The beginning.
Before Lily.
Before Chloe.
Before everything collapsed.
My father had still been alive.
And he had been confronting Daniel.
I sat down.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Because your father wanted you to have a normal life.”
I laughed.
“A normal life?”
“No.”
He corrected himself.
“He wanted you to have a chance at one.”
I looked at the recording.
“And Daniel?”
“Your father gave him a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Walk away from you.”
“And he didn't.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Money.”
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
Money.
Always money.
But then I remembered something.
“Wait.”
Everyone looked at me.
“There was another recording.”
Sarah frowned.
“What?”
“I recorded Daniel again.”
“When?”
“The night he came to my apartment.”
I searched my phone.
Found the file.
Played it.
Daniel's voice:
“I didn't know Lily was yours.”
My voice:
“You knew.”
Daniel:
“Yes.”
Then a long pause.
And then:
“But I wasn't the one who arranged the transfer.”
I stopped the recording.
I looked at Alexander.
“Who did?”
He didn't answer.
“Who arranged it?”
“Your mother.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“You said my father was involved.”
“He was.”
“And my mother?”
“She helped him.”
“Why?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Because your father was dying.”
The story came out slowly.
My father had discovered that someone inside his company was stealing millions.
The person wasn't Daniel.
It was Richard Hale.
Richard had been moving money through shell companies.
My father found out.
Then he discovered something worse.
Richard had been manipulating medical records connected to the family.
Embryos.
Genetic material.
Inheritance documents.
My father feared that if he died, Richard would eventually come after me.
So he created a contingency.
The embryo.
A biological heir.
Not because he wanted another child.
But because he believed an additional heir would expose anyone trying to control the trust.
Except something went wrong.
Richard discovered the plan.
And Daniel became involved.
I looked at Alexander.
“Where were you?”
“I was investigating Richard.”
“Why didn't you come to me?”
“Because your father ordered me not to.”
“Why?”
“He believed you would be safer if you hated him.”
I stared at him.
“What kind of father does that?”
“The kind who knew he was going to die.”
My eyes burned.
I had spent years believing my father had abandoned me emotionally.
Now I learned that he had been building an invisible shield around me.
But that shield had become a prison.
And Daniel had learned how to use it.
I looked at Alexander.
“What does Richard want?”
“The embryo.”
“Why?”
“Because it contains your father's genetic material.”
I frowned.
“That doesn't explain it.”
Alexander shook his head.
“Your father didn't merely leave you money.”
He opened another file.
“He left you controlling shares in the company.”
I looked at the document.
My name appeared beside a number.
51%.
I stared.
“That's impossible.”
“It's real.”
“And the other 49%?”
“Held in trust.”
“By whom?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Your future biological heir.”
My heart stopped.
“Emma?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
He pointed to the embryo record.
“The unborn child.”
I couldn't breathe.
“My father created a structure where the unborn child controls 49% of the company?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To prevent anyone from taking control.”
“But if the child doesn't exist…”
“Then the shares remain frozen.”
“And if the child is born?”
“They activate.”
I stared at the document.
Suddenly, Daniel's obsession made sense.
He didn't just want my inheritance.
He wanted control of the company.
And the unborn child represented almost half of it.
But there was still one question.
“Why did Daniel need Lily?”
Alexander answered immediately.
“Because he needed a legal heir.”
I frowned.
“Even if she wasn't biologically mine?”
“Yes.”
“To satisfy the trust?”
“Exactly.”
I felt sick.
Lily had been used as a placeholder.
A legal disguise.
A financial weapon.
A baby turned into paperwork.
Then Sarah noticed something.
“Jennifer.”
She pointed at the recording.
“Play that section again.”
I did.
Daniel's voice:
“If she finds out, everything is over.”
My mother:
“You promised you wouldn't hurt her.”
Daniel:
“I never planned to hurt Jennifer.”
Then static.
Sarah leaned closer.
“There.”
“What?”
“Background noise.”
We amplified it.
A faint sound appeared.
A telephone ringing.
Then a woman answering.
“Carter residence.”
I froze.
“That was my house.”
“Yes.”
“Who answered?”
The recording continued.
A second voice whispered:
“It's done.”
Then another:
“Good. Now make sure Jennifer never finds the recording.”
I stared at Sarah.
“That wasn't Daniel.”
“No.”
“Who was it?”
Alexander looked toward the window.
“Margaret.”
My blood ran cold.
“She knew about the recording?”
“Yes.”
“And she tried to destroy it.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew what Daniel had done.”
Suddenly everything became clear.
Margaret hadn't chosen Chloe because she hated me.
She had chosen Chloe because Chloe was useful.
She could carry Emma.
She could create a second family.
She could provide Daniel with a story.
And she could help Margaret control the inheritance.
But there was something Margaret hadn't anticipated.
Chloe had kept records.
I had kept the recording.
And Daniel had become careless.
The next morning, I released nothing.
No statement.
No interview.
No social media post.
Nothing.
Daniel expected me to attack.
Margaret expected me to defend myself.
Instead, I waited.
Because I finally understood something.
Truth was more powerful when the liar believed he still had time.
At 10:00 a.m., Daniel called.
I answered.
“Jennifer.”
“Yes?”
“We need to settle this privately.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
“You don't understand what will happen if this goes to court.”
“I understand.”
“You'll destroy everyone.”
“You already did.”
Silence.
Then he whispered:
“I know about the recording.”
I smiled.
“I thought you might.”
“You can't use it.”
“Why?”
“Because it was illegally obtained.”
I laughed.
“You don't even know how I obtained it.”
“Yes, I do.”
“You're scared.”
He went silent.
Then:
“What do you want?”
“Everything.”
“Meaning?”
“Full financial disclosure.”
“No.”
“Custody of Lily.”
“No.”
“Recognition of Emma as my daughter.”
Silence.
“And one more thing.”
“What?”
“Your confession.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You'll never get that.”
I smiled.
“Daniel.”
“Yes?”
“You already gave it to me.”
Silence.
“The recording.”
His breathing changed.
I hung up.
That afternoon, Sarah arrived with an update.
“Daniel's lawyers have withdrawn the custody request.”
I looked up.
“Why?”
“They discovered the recording.”
“Good.”
“There's more.”
“What?”
“Margaret has disappeared.”
I frowned.
“Disappeared?”
“She left the country this morning.”
“With whom?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Richard Hale.”
My heart stopped.
“Where are they going?”
“We don't know.”
Then her phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“We found their destination.”
“Where?”
“Switzerland.”
“Why?”
She looked at me.
“Because there's a private genetic facility there.”
My blood ran cold.
“The embryo.”
“Yes.”
“They're going after it.”
“No.”
Sarah shook her head.
“They already have it.”
I felt the room spin.
“What?”
“The embryo was transferred yesterday.”
“Transferred where?”
Sarah looked at the report.
“To a private clinic in Switzerland.”
I stared at the words.
Then my phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A photograph appeared.
A woman lying on a hospital bed.
Margaret stood beside her.
Richard stood behind them.
And on the bed…
was Chloe.
Her face was pale.
Her hands were restrained.
Under the photograph was one sentence.
“If you want to save Chloe and the child, come alone.”
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
“Bring the original recording.”
I looked at Sarah.
She understood immediately.
“They want the evidence.”
I nodded.
“No.”
Sarah frowned.
“No?”
I put the phone down.
“They don't want the recording.”
“Then what do they want?”
I looked at the photograph again.
“They want me to think Chloe is in danger.”
Sarah's eyes narrowed.
“You think it's a trap.”
“I know it is.”
“Then what are we going to do?”
I picked up the recorder.
The same recorder Daniel had spent years trying to destroy.
The recording that contained the truth.
The recording that could finally end his lies.
I looked at Sarah.
“We're going to let them believe they have it.”
“And the real recording?”
I smiled.
“It's already somewhere they can't reach.”
“Where?”
I touched my phone.
“Three lawyers.”
Sarah nodded.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
I opened the final file.
A second recording.
One I had never told anyone about.
One Daniel had never known existed.
One recorded after the first.
My father's voice filled the room.
“Jennifer, if you're hearing this, it means Daniel failed to destroy the evidence.”
I froze.
My father's voice continued.
“There is one thing you must understand.”
A pause.
Then:
“The child created from your DNA was never intended to inherit my empire.”
My heart stopped.
My father's final words came through the speaker.
“That child was created to expose the person who murdered me.”
The recording ended.
I stared into silence.
Because suddenly, the question wasn't who stole my money.
It wasn't who betrayed me.
It wasn't even who controlled the embryo.
The question was much darker.
May you like
Who killed my father?
And why had everyone spent years making sure I never asked?
