Chapter 8 — The Night Chloe Came to Jennifer’s Door

Chapter 8 — The Night Chloe Came to Jennifer’s Door

It was nearly midnight when someone knocked on my door.

Three slow knocks.

Then silence.

I didn't move.

After everything that had happened, I no longer opened my door simply because someone knocked.

Sarah was asleep in the guest room.

The security system was armed.

My phone was beside me.

Another knock came.

This time, faster.

Then a whisper slipped through the door.

“Jennifer.”

I recognized the voice.

Chloe.

I opened the security monitor.

She stood alone in the hallway.

No Daniel.

No Margaret.

No lawyers.

No security.

Just Chloe.

She looked terrified.

Her hair was wet from the rain.

One hand pressed against her stomach.

The other held a small black bag.

I opened the door.

“Chloe?”

She looked over her shoulder.

“Can I come in?”

I stepped aside.

She entered immediately.

I locked the door behind her.

Then I noticed the blood on her sleeve.

“What happened?”

She shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Chloe, you're bleeding.”

“I know.”

“Who hurt you?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“Margaret.”

My body went still.

Sarah came running from the guest room.

“What happened?”

Chloe looked at her.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

“For bringing this to your door.”

Sarah reached for the first-aid kit.

“Sit down.”

Chloe obeyed.

I watched her carefully.

She wasn't pretending.

Her hands were shaking.

Her breathing was uneven.

And beneath the fear was something else.

Guilt.

Deep guilt.

The kind that came from carrying a secret too heavy to keep.

I knelt beside her.

“Tell me what happened.”

She looked at me.

“Margaret found out that I knew about the recording.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she threaten you?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Chloe swallowed.

“She said if I told you the truth, she would make sure Emma disappeared.”

I felt my blood run cold.

“She threatened your own child?”

“She said Daniel would get custody.”

“He won't.”

“I know that now.”

She looked down.

“But there's something I haven't told you.”

I waited.

Chloe took a breath.

“I wasn't supposed to be pregnant with Emma.”

Silence.

Sarah stopped bandaging her arm.

“What do you mean?”

Chloe's eyes filled with tears.

“The embryo they gave me…”

She looked at me.

“It wasn't mine.”

I couldn't speak.

“What?”

“The embryo belonged to you.”

“I know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

I stared at her.

“What don't I understand?”

“The embryo wasn't simply created from your genetic material.”

She opened the black bag.

Inside was a plastic evidence envelope.

She placed it on the table.

A laboratory report.

Old.

Yellowed at the edges.

My name was printed across the top.

JENNIFER CARTER.

I picked it up.

“What is this?”

“A genetic extraction report.”

“From when?”

“Twenty-two years ago.”

My hands began trembling.

“Twenty-two…”

I looked at her.

“I was a teenager.”

“Yes.”

“Why would anyone extract my DNA?”

Chloe whispered:

“Your father.”

I stared at the report.

“Why?”

“Because he knew someone was trying to kill him.”

The room became silent.

Sarah sat beside me.

“Start from the beginning.”

Chloe nodded.

“I didn't know any of this when I met Daniel.”

“Then when did you learn?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“From whom?”

“Margaret.”

“Why would she tell you?”

“Because she thought I was loyal to her.”

Chloe gave a bitter laugh.

“She was wrong.”

“What did she tell you?”

“That your father had a secret project.”

“The embryo.”

“Yes.”

“And you?”

“I was the carrier.”

My stomach twisted.

“You agreed?”

“I didn't know whose embryo it was.”

“Then what did you think?”

“I thought it was mine and Daniel's.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me that.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another lie.

Chloe continued.

“Daniel told me he had arranged the procedure privately.”

“Did you believe him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I loved him.”

I looked away.

For the first time, I understood that Chloe had been manipulated too.

Not innocent.

But manipulated.

She had participated in the affair.

She had accepted money.

She had helped Daniel hide things.

But she hadn't understood the entire machine surrounding her.

“What happened after Emma was born?”

Chloe looked at me.

“Margaret took the medical records.”

“Why?”

“She said she needed to protect the family.”

“From what?”

“From you.”

I frowned.

“Why would she be afraid of me?”

“Because Emma was your biological daughter.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Chloe's voice dropped.

“She was afraid because Emma's DNA could prove something else.”

“What?”

Chloe reached into the bag again.

This time she removed a photograph.

An old photograph of my father.

Standing beside a younger Richard Hale.

Between them was a laboratory door.

And on the door was a sign.

VALE GENETICS — RESTRICTED ACCESS

I stared at it.

“What's this?”

“Your father's private laboratory.”

“My father never had a laboratory.”

“He did.”

“Where?”

“Under the old Carter estate.”

I froze.

“Our basement?”

“Yes.”

I remembered that basement.

The locked room my father never allowed me to enter.

The room I had been told contained old business records.

It suddenly made sense.

“What did they do there?”

Chloe looked at me.

“They created embryos.”

My stomach turned.

“For what?”

“To preserve the bloodline.”

“That sounds insane.”

“It was.”

She handed me another document.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

Then another signature.

Richard Hale.

And beneath them:

GENETIC CONTINUITY PROGRAM.

I read the first paragraph.

The program was designed to preserve genetic material from families whose fortunes were controlled by inheritance trusts.

My father's name appeared.

My mother's name appeared.

Mine appeared.

Then another name.

Alexander Carter.

I looked up.

“Alexander knew?”

“He was part of it.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he was protecting you.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone uses that excuse.”

Chloe looked at me.

“Jennifer.”

“What?”

“There is something worse.”

I waited.

“Emma wasn't the only embryo.”

My heart stopped.

“How many?”

“Seven.”

Sarah stared at her.

“Seven?”

Chloe nodded.

“Six were destroyed.”

“And Emma?”

“The seventh.”

“Why was she implanted?”

“Because the others failed.”

“Failed how?”

“They didn't survive.”

I looked at the document.

“Why was Emma different?”

Chloe hesitated.

“She carried something the others didn't.”

“What?”

“Your father's genetic marker.”

I frowned.

“My father was her grandfather.”

“Yes.”

“So?”

“He had a rare hereditary marker.”

“What's rare about it?”

Chloe looked at me.

“It was linked to the trust.”

I didn't understand.

She explained.

“Your father's lawyers designed the trust so that only a biological descendant carrying that marker could activate the final inheritance clause.”

My breath caught.

“Emma.”

“Yes.”

“She is the key.”

“Yes.”

“To the empire.”

“Yes.”

Suddenly I understood Daniel's obsession.

The custody battle.

The money.

The lies.

The pregnancy.

The elaborate baptism.

The shell companies.

Everything.

Daniel had never simply wanted my money.

He wanted Emma.

Because Emma was the key to my father's empire.

But there was still something I couldn't explain.

“Then why did Daniel pretend Lily was his heir?”

Chloe looked down.

“Because he didn't know Emma was the real heir.”

“What?”

“He believed Lily was the child connected to the trust.”

“Why?”

“Because Margaret told him.”

I stared.

“Margaret lied to her own son?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because she wanted control.”

Sarah leaned forward.

“Control of what?”

“The trust.”

Chloe looked at me.

“Margaret believed that if Daniel became legal guardian of Lily, she could eventually control the inheritance.”

“But Lily isn't connected to the trust.”

“Exactly.”

“So Margaret was wrong.”

“Not completely.”

I frowned.

“She knew something you didn't.”

“What?”

“She knew Daniel wasn't your husband's biological father.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

Chloe nodded.

“Daniel had a paternity problem.”

“With Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Lily isn't his?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why did he insist she was?”

“Because he needed everyone to believe it.”

I stared at her.

“Who is Lily's father?”

Chloe's expression changed.

“I don't know.”

I stood.

“Chloe.”

“I swear.”

“You must know something.”

“I only know what Daniel told me.”

“What did he tell you?”

“He said Lily was conceived using an anonymous donor.”

I froze.

“Anonymous?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was he so certain she was his?”

“Because he paid the clinic.”

My heart sank.

“Daniel paid for the donor.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted a child connected to his family.”

I looked at her.

“But if he wasn't the biological father…”

“He didn't care.”

“Why?”

Chloe whispered:

“Because he believed the trust only required a legal heir.”

The pieces were finally coming together.

But one piece still didn't fit.

My father.

Why would he create all of this?

Why embryos?

Why secret laboratories?

Why a trust designed around genetic markers?

Why Alexander?

Why Daniel?

Why Margaret?

And most importantly…

Why had my father never told me?

I turned to Chloe.

“What did my father know about Daniel?”

She looked away.

“Everything.”

“What does that mean?”

“He knew Daniel was going to marry you.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“He knew.”

“How?”

“Because Daniel was working for him.”

I felt dizzy.

“Daniel worked for my father?”

“Yes.”

“Doing what?”

“Financial investigations.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“He was supposed to investigate Richard.”

“Then why did he betray me?”

“Because Richard offered him more money.”

I stared at the floor.

“So Daniel started as my father's employee.”

“Yes.”

“And ended up stealing from me.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't my father stop him?”

“He tried.”

“How?”

Chloe looked at the recorder.

“That's what the recording was about.”

I replayed the recording.

My father's voice emerged.

“Daniel, you have one chance.”

Daniel:

“I know.”

My father:

“Leave Jennifer alone.”

Daniel:

“I can't.”

My father:

“Then you leave me no choice.”

Daniel:

“What are you going to do?”

My father's voice became cold.

“Tell her everything.”

Daniel:

“You wouldn't.”

My father:

“Watch me.”

Then Daniel whispered:

“If you expose me, Richard will kill her.”

Silence.

My father's voice changed.

“What did you say?”

Daniel:

“Richard knows about Jennifer.”

My father:

“Explain.”

Daniel:

“He knows she's the beneficiary.”

My father:

“And?”

Daniel:

“He wants her dead.”

The recording ended.

I stared at the phone.

My father's final words.

The words I had never heard before.

My father knew I was in danger.

And he trusted Daniel to protect me.

The man he trusted had become the man who betrayed me.

Chloe suddenly stood.

“We have to leave.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because Margaret knows where I am.”

“How?”

“She put a tracker in my bag.”

I looked at the black bag.

“Where?”

Chloe pointed.

“Inside the lining.”

Sarah opened it.

A tiny device fell onto the table.

My stomach tightened.

“How long has she been tracking you?”

“Three days.”

“Then she knows you're here.”

Chloe nodded.

“Yes.”

As if on cue…

my security alarm began screaming.

Sarah jumped up.

“Someone's at the gate.”

I checked the monitor.

Three black SUVs.

No license plates.

I looked at Chloe.

“Margaret?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

She stared at the screen.

Her face went completely white.

“Richard.”

The front gate collapsed.

The first SUV drove through.

Security lights flashed.

Sarah grabbed the emergency phone.

I moved Chloe toward the back hallway.

“Go.”

“What about you?”

“Go!”

We ran.

Behind us, glass shattered.

Men entered the building.

Not police.

Not security.

Armed men.

I pulled Chloe into the basement.

The old basement.

The same basement my father had locked years ago.

The same room I had never been allowed to enter.

Chloe stopped.

“Jennifer.”

“What?”

She pointed.

“There.”

A hidden keypad.

I stared at it.

Four numbers.

I entered my father's birthday.

Wrong.

I tried my mother's.

Wrong.

Then I remembered something.

The phrase my father used to repeat when I was little.

“Your birthday is not your beginning.”

I entered the date of my conception.

The door opened.

Inside was a laboratory.

Cold.

Silent.

Preserved exactly as it had been decades ago.

And in the center…

were seven storage chambers.

Six were empty.

One remained sealed.

Its label read:

EMBRYO 07 — JENNIFER CARTER

I stared at it.

“That can't be Emma.”

Chloe shook her head.

“It isn't.”

I turned.

“What?”

She pointed to another label.

A smaller one.

Almost hidden beneath the first.

TRANSFERRED — CHLOE MORGAN.

I couldn't breathe.

“Then what happened to Emma?”

Chloe looked at me.

“She isn't in Switzerland.”

“Where is she?”

Chloe's voice broke.

“She's with Daniel.”

I felt my blood freeze.

“Daniel has Emma?”

“Yes.”

“And Margaret?”

“She doesn't.”

“Then why did Margaret tell everyone she had her?”

Chloe looked terrified.

“Because Daniel took Emma before I came here.”

I stared at her.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

His voice was barely a whisper.

“Jennifer.”

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then:

“Which one?”

My heart stopped.

“Lily or Emma?”

Daniel breathed slowly.

“You still don't understand.”

“Where is Emma?”

“She isn't your only daughter.”

I froze.

“What?”

“There were seven embryos.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“You think six failed.”

Silence.

“They didn't.”

My blood ran cold.

“What did you do?”

Daniel whispered:

“I kept them.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Seven embryos.

Seven possible children.

And if Daniel was telling the truth…

Emma wasn't the only biological heir my father had created.

Somewhere in the world, six more children might exist.

And Daniel had spent years searching for them.

Not to protect them.

Not to love them.

But to control the inheritance.

Then a final message appeared on my screen.

A photograph.

Six children.

Different ages.

Different families.

But all carrying the same genetic marker.

Under the photograph was one sentence:

“Your father didn't create an heir, Jennifer.”

A second message followed.

“He created a bloodline.”

And then:

“Daniel has already found the first five.”

I stared at the screen.

For the first time that night, I understood why Chloe had come to my door.

She hadn't come merely to confess.

She had come because the secret was much bigger than Daniel.

Much bigger than Margaret.

Much bigger than the money.

Someone had been collecting my father's descendants for years.

And now that person knew I had discovered the truth.

The basement door suddenly began to shake.

Someone was trying to break in.

Chloe grabbed my hand.

“Jennifer.”

“What?”

“They're here.”

I looked at the sealed embryo chamber.

Then at the photograph of the six children.

And finally at the locked door.

I picked up the recorder.

“Then tonight…”

May you like

I whispered,

“…we stop running.”
