Chapter 9 — The Man Daniel Was Protecting

Chapter 9 — The Man Daniel Was Protecting
The basement door shook again.
Once.
Twice.
Then a third time with enough force to make dust fall from the ceiling.
Chloe grabbed my arm.
“They're coming.”
I looked at the old laboratory around us.
Seven chambers.
Six empty.
One sealed.
My father's handwriting on the walls.
Documents stacked inside locked cabinets.
And somewhere above us, men were searching the house.
But one thought kept repeating in my mind.
Daniel had been protecting someone.
Not Margaret.
Not Chloe.
Not himself.
Someone powerful enough to make a man destroy his marriage, steal from his own daughter, lie about a child's identity, and risk prison.
Someone my father had feared.
Someone who had remained hidden for years.
Richard Hale.
I looked at Chloe.
“Where is Daniel?”
“I don't know.”
“You do.”
She shook her head.
“He called me two hours ago.”
“What did he say?”
“That he was going to meet someone.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“Richard.”
The basement door shook again.
I turned toward it.
“We need to get out.”
Chloe pointed toward the back wall.
“There.”
A narrow passage opened behind an old cabinet.
My father had built an escape tunnel beneath the house.
I had never known.
We ran.
The tunnel smelled of dust and damp concrete.
Sarah followed behind us.
“Where does this lead?”
I looked at Chloe.
She shook her head.
“I've never been here.”
I kept moving.
My father had once told me that every house needed two exits.
At the time, I thought he meant for emergencies.
Now I understood.
He had known one day someone might come looking for me.
After five minutes, we reached a steel door.
I pushed.
It opened onto an abandoned greenhouse behind the estate.
Rain poured down.
We ran into the darkness.
A vehicle waited on the other side of the road.
Alexander stood beside it.
“Get in.”
I stared at him.
“How did you know?”
“I heard the alarm.”
“Where's Daniel?”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“That's what I'm trying to find out.”
We got inside.
As the car pulled away, I looked back at my father's estate.
Black SUVs surrounded the house.
But nobody followed.
Not yet.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Alexander looked at me through the rearview mirror.
“About Richard?”
“Yes.”
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he spoke.
“Richard Hale was your father's closest financial adviser.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You know the public version.”
“What is the real version?”
“Richard didn't work for your father.”
I frowned.
“He worked with him.”
“For what?”
“To build the empire.”
I stared at him.
“How?”
“Your grandfather started the company. Your father expanded it. Richard handled the parts no one wanted to see.”
“Illegal operations?”
“Not initially.”
“What changed?”
“Money.”
Alexander turned onto an empty road.
“Richard discovered that certain assets could be hidden through foreign trusts.”
“And my father allowed it?”
“At first.”
“Why?”
“To protect the company during a financial crisis.”
I shook my head.
“So Richard began stealing.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Enough to buy governments.”
I looked at Sarah.
She was already taking notes.
“Then why didn't my father expose him?”
“He tried.”
“When?”
“Seven years before his death.”
“What happened?”
“Richard threatened him.”
“With what?”
Alexander looked at me.
“With you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Me?”
“Your father received photographs.”
“Of me?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“School.”
“University.”
“Your apartment.”
I felt cold.
“He was watching me.”
“Yes.”
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because your father had discovered something.”
“What?”
Alexander looked away.
“Richard wasn't stealing money.”
I waited.
“He was buying people.”
The sentence hung in the car.
“Explain.”
“Judges.”
“Bankers.”
“Doctors.”
“Politicians.”
“Executives.”
“Anyone who could influence the company.”
I remembered the forged documents.
The fake medical records.
The trust.
The embryo program.
Everything suddenly looked connected.
“He was building control.”
“Yes.”
“Control of the company?”
“Control of the inheritance.”
“Why?”
Alexander's answer was quiet.
“Because your father had created a succession structure Richard couldn't penetrate.”
“The genetic trust.”
“Yes.”
“So Richard needed a biological heir.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why he wanted the embryos.”
“Yes.”
I stared out the window.
“How did Daniel become involved?”
Alexander sighed.
“Daniel was recruited.”
“By Richard?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Before he met you.”
My stomach turned.
“Then our entire relationship…”
“Was engineered.”
I remembered the first time I met Daniel.
The coffee shop.
The rain.
The way he had seemed nervous.
The way he knew exactly what I liked.
The flowers.
The books.
The dinners.
The proposal.
I had believed it was love.
Now every memory looked different.
“Did he ever love me?”
Alexander didn't answer.
“Tell me.”
“I don't know.”
“That's not good enough.”
He looked at me.
“I think he did.”
My eyes burned.
“But?”
“But Richard made him choose.”
“Between me and money?”
“No.”
Alexander's voice softened.
“Between you and his family.”
I frowned.
“His family?”
“Richard had Daniel's father in debt.”
“Bad debt?”
“Millions.”
“And Daniel inherited it.”
“Yes.”
“So Richard controlled him.”
“Exactly.”
Sarah interrupted.
“Wait.”
We looked at her.
“If Richard controlled Daniel through debt, why did Daniel become wealthy?”
Alexander smiled bitterly.
“Because Richard paid him.”
“How much?”
“Enough.”
“Enough for what?”
“To keep quiet.”
I looked at my bank records.
The millions.
The transfers.
The shell companies.
Suddenly I understood.
Daniel wasn't stealing randomly.
He was paying a debt.
A debt that didn't belong to him.
A debt Richard had created.
A debt designed to keep Daniel obedient.
“Then the $15,000 Chloe received…”
“Richard's money.”
“The $38 million?”
“Richard's.”
“The money Daniel stole from Lily?”
“Richard's target.”
I stared at him.
“Why Lily?”
Alexander answered:
“Because Daniel believed Lily was the easiest way to reach the trust.”
The car stopped.
We were outside an old warehouse.
Alexander turned off the engine.
“Richard uses this place.”
“How do you know?”
“My father tracked him here.”
“When?”
“Three months before he died.”
“Did he confront him?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Alexander looked at me.
“He disappeared for forty-eight hours.”
My heart stopped.
“Who disappeared?”
“My father.”
“Then he returned?”
“Yes.”
“Did he tell you what happened?”
“He said only one thing.”
“What?”
Alexander stared through the windshield.
“Richard isn't the mastermind.”
Silence.
I felt a chill.
“Then who is?”
Alexander opened the car door.
“That's what we're going to find out.”
The warehouse was empty.
Too empty.
No guards.
No cameras.
No vehicles.
We entered carefully.
At the center stood a single table.
On it was a laptop.
Beside it…
a photograph.
My photograph.
Taken when I was sixteen.
I picked it up.
On the back was written:
SUBJECT A — PRIMARY HEIR
Sarah looked at me.
“Subject?”
I turned the photograph over.
Another line had been written.
MONITOR UNTIL AGE 30.
My hands shook.
“Someone has been monitoring me since I was sixteen.”
Alexander nodded.
“Apparently.”
I opened the laptop.
No password.
The screen displayed a file.
PROJECT SUCCESSION.
Inside were dozens of names.
Daniel.
Margaret.
Richard.
Chloe.
And mine.
But beneath my name was another.
LILY CARTER.
I opened it.
The file contained medical records.
Then DNA results.
Then a photograph.
I froze.
The photograph showed Lily.
But beneath it was a genetic analysis.
PATERNITY: 99.99%
I stared.
Daniel was Lily's biological father.
My hands went numb.
“He told the truth.”
Sarah looked at me.
“About what?”
“Lily.”
I looked at the screen.
“She is his daughter.”
Then another line appeared.
MATERNAL DNA: UNKNOWN.
I frowned.
“Why is my DNA missing?”
Alexander came closer.
“Because they never tested you.”
“Why?”
“Because they didn't need to.”
I turned toward him.
“What does that mean?”
“Because Lily wasn't created naturally.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“Daniel used genetic material.”
“Whose?”
Alexander pointed to the report.
“Yours.”
My breath stopped.
The room went silent.
“That's impossible.”
“No.”
Alexander shook his head.
“It's not.”
I stared at the report.
“You're saying Lily is genetically mine?”
“Yes.”
“But Chloe carried Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Then Lily…”
“Was created from your genetic material too.”
My stomach turned.
“How?”
Alexander looked at the screen.
“Your father stored your DNA for decades.”
I felt sick.
“Without my permission?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To preserve the family line.”
I shook my head.
“This is insane.”
Alexander didn't disagree.
“Your father believed the company needed a biological successor.”
“So Lily is…”
“Your daughter.”
I stared at the photograph.
Lily.
My baby.
The baby I had believed was only mine.
The baby Daniel had used.
The baby he had lied about.
She was biologically connected to me.
And suddenly another horrifying question appeared.
“Then why did Daniel call her his?”
Alexander looked at me.
“Because he is her biological father.”
I couldn't breathe.
“Then Lily and Emma…”
He nodded.
“Are half-sisters.”
I sat down.
Everything became unbearable.
Two children.
Two mothers.
One father.
One hidden genetic program.
And a man who had spent years manipulating all of us.
But there was another file.
MATERNAL SOURCE: JENNIFER CARTER.
I stared at it.
Then beneath it:
GENETIC MATERIAL ACQUIRED WITHOUT CONSENT.
I felt tears burn my eyes.
Daniel had known.
Margaret had known.
Richard had known.
My father had known.
Everyone had known except me.
I had been the only person in my own life who hadn't been given the truth.
Then the warehouse lights came on.
A voice echoed from the balcony.
“You finally understand.”
I looked up.
Richard Hale stood above us.
Older.
Elegant.
Calm.
He wasn't hiding anymore.
Two men stood behind him.
And beside him…
was Daniel.
My husband looked broken.
His face was bruised.
His shirt was torn.
His hands were tied.
“Daniel.”
He looked at me.
“Jennifer…”
Richard smiled.
“You see?”
He descended the stairs.
“Your husband has always been a coward.”
Daniel shouted:
“Don't listen to him.”
Richard laughed.
“You still think she can save you?”
I stared at Richard.
“You stole my father's company.”
“No.”
“You manipulated Daniel.”
“No.”
“You took my DNA.”
“No.”
“Then what did you do?”
Richard stopped.
“I protected an empire from a man who didn't understand how to control it.”
“You murdered my father.”
Silence.
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, the smile disappeared.
Daniel looked at him.
“Don't.”
Richard ignored him.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
“Your father wasn't murdered.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He killed himself.”
Daniel's face went white.
“That's not true.”
Richard looked at him.
“You were there.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“You heard the gunshot.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Stop.”
“You saw the blood.”
“Stop!”
“You helped clean the room.”
Daniel screamed.
“STOP!”
I stared at my husband.
“You were there?”
He couldn't look at me.
“Daniel.”
His voice broke.
“I didn't kill him.”
“But you were there.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Richard told me he would kill you.”
I felt my heart break all over again.
“You should have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“You should have protected me.”
“I tried.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You protected yourself.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I know.”
Richard smiled.
“This is pointless.”
I looked at him.
“You made Daniel steal from me.”
“Yes.”
“You made him betray me.”
“Yes.”
“You made him lie about my children.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard's eyes hardened.
“Because your father left you something he should never have left.”
“The company.”
“No.”
“The trust.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Richard stepped closer.
“Control.”
I frowned.
“Control over what?”
“The people who own the world.”
I didn't understand.
He continued.
“Your father's empire wasn't a business.”
“It was infrastructure.”
“Energy.”
“Finance.”
“Medical research.”
“Communications.”
“Supply chains.”
“Your father controlled pieces of all of them.”
“And the trust was designed to keep them together.”
I looked at the files.
“So you wanted the trust.”
“Yes.”
“And the genetic heirs?”
“Necessary.”
“Why?”
“Because your father made control biological.”
Richard looked at Daniel.
“You were supposed to marry Jennifer.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You were supposed to produce a legal heir.”
Daniel said nothing.
“But then Jennifer became pregnant.”
I froze.
Richard continued.
“Everything became complicated.”
“Why?”
“Because her pregnancy wasn't part of the plan.”
I stared.
“Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel's child.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did you need Emma?”
“Because Emma carries the succession marker.”
I understood.
Two children.
Two purposes.
Lily gave Daniel legitimacy.
Emma gave the trust its biological successor.
And Richard wanted both.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you ever love me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
I shook my head.
“You don't get to say that.”
“I know.”
“You knew everything.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Chloe was carrying my embryo.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lily was genetically mine.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my father was in danger.”
“Yes.”
“And you still stood beside me and told me I was lucky to have you.”
He broke.
“I was wrong.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“You weren't wrong.”
I looked into his eyes.
“You chose.”
Daniel whispered:
“Yes.”
“You chose money.”
“Yes.”
“You chose fear.”
“Yes.”
“You chose Richard.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
I nodded.
“Then live with that choice.”
Richard suddenly raised a gun.
Everything stopped.
“Enough.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Richard.”
“Stay back.”
He aimed at me.
Daniel moved between us.
“Don't.”
Richard looked at him.
“You've failed me too many times.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Let her go.”
“You don't give orders.”
“She knows everything now.”
“Exactly.”
Richard raised the gun.
Then Daniel did something I never expected.
He turned toward me.
And spoke clearly.
“Jennifer.”
“Yes?”
“I recorded everything.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
Daniel smiled through the blood on his face.
“I knew you would come.”
Richard's expression changed.
Daniel continued.
“Every conversation.”
“Every payment.”
“Every threat.”
“Every order.”
He looked at me.
“I sent copies to her lawyer.”
Richard's face went pale.
“You wouldn't.”
“I already did.”
Richard pulled the trigger.
The gunshot exploded through the warehouse.
Daniel collapsed.
I screamed.
“DANIEL!”
But before I could reach him, sirens filled the night.
Red and blue lights flooded through the windows.
Richard turned toward the exits.
Alexander tackled him.
The gun skidded across the floor.
Police stormed the warehouse.
And for the first time…
Richard Hale was no longer untouchable.
Daniel lay bleeding on the floor.
I knelt beside him.
“You idiot.”
He smiled weakly.
“I know.”
“You could have died.”
“I know.”
“Why did you do it?”
His eyes met mine.
“Because I finally understood something.”
“What?”
“You were never the woman I needed to control.”
His voice faded.
“You were the woman I should have protected.”
I stared at him.
Then the paramedics rushed in.
As they carried him away, one final thought struck me.
Richard had been caught.
Daniel had confessed.
The recordings were safe.
The truth was finally coming out.
But the biggest secret remained.
My father hadn't created one heir.
He had created a bloodline.
And somewhere in the world…
six more children were waiting.
Children who didn't know why powerful people had been searching for them.
Children whose DNA could destroy an empire.
And if Richard had spent years finding them…
someone else could be searching too.
I looked at Alexander.
“Where are the other five?”
He didn't answer.
“Alexander.”
He finally looked at me.
“We don't know.”
“Then find them.”
He nodded.
But before we left the warehouse, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
One photograph.
A little girl.
Maybe seven years old.
Standing outside a school.
Underneath her picture was a single sentence:
“Subject Six has been located.”
Then another message appeared.
“And she's not the only one looking for you.”
I stared at the screen.
Because in the reflection of the photograph…
standing across the street from the little girl…
May you like
was my mother.
And my mother had been dead for eleven years.
