Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Had Daniel’s Second Family

Chapter 3 — The Woman Who Had Daniel’s Second Family
I met Chloe in a parking garage beneath an abandoned office building.
She had chosen the location carefully.
No cameras.
No reporters.
No curious neighbors.
No Daniel.
Just concrete walls, flickering fluorescent lights, and the sound of distant traffic.
I arrived ten minutes early.
She was already there.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
I had seen her photographs.
The woman in Daniel's messages.
The woman he had secretly supported.
The woman whose pregnancy had become the center of my husband's hidden life.
But photographs had never prepared me for seeing her in person.
She looked exhausted.
Not glamorous.
Not confident.
Not like the woman Daniel had described as “the love of his life.”
She looked frightened.
And she was holding a baby.
A little girl.
Maybe six months old.
I stared at the child.
Chloe noticed.
“This is Emma.”
My heart tightened.
“She's beautiful.”
“She is.”
Chloe looked down at her.
Then back at me.
“You have a daughter too.”
“Lily.”
“I know.”
I felt my stomach turn.
“How?”
Chloe gave me a sad smile.
“Daniel told me everything.”
I took a step closer.
“Then tell me the truth.”
She shook her head.
“You don't know what you're asking.”
“Yes, I do.”
“You think I'm the woman who stole your husband.”
“Aren't you?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
The answer stunned me.
She continued.
“I never stole Daniel from you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You were sleeping with my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You were pregnant with his child.”
“Yes.”
“He sent you fifteen thousand dollars.”
“Yes.”
“He paid for your medical expenses.”
“Yes.”
“And you expect me to believe you weren't involved?”
“I was involved.”
She swallowed.
“But not in the way you think.”
I looked at Emma.
“Is she Daniel's daughter?”
Chloe's expression changed.
“No.”
The world seemed to stop.
“What?”
“She isn't Daniel's.”
“Then whose child is she?”
Chloe looked directly at me.
“Yours.”
I couldn't breathe.
The parking garage disappeared.
The concrete walls.
The lights.
The cars.
Everything.
Only those three words remained.
Yours.
“No.”
Chloe's eyes filled with tears.
“I wish I could have told you sooner.”
“You're lying.”
“I know how it sounds.”
“You're lying.”
“I have the records.”
I stepped backward.
“My daughter is Lily.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you saying Emma is mine?”
“Because Lily isn't.”
My knees almost gave way.
Chloe reached toward me.
I stepped away.
“Don't touch me.”
She lowered her hand.
“I'm sorry.”
“You're telling me the baby I gave birth to isn't mine?”
“Yes.”
“Then who is Lily?”
Chloe closed her eyes.
“I don't know.”
I couldn't speak.
For nine months, Lily had been inside me.
I had felt every movement.
Every kick.
Every turn.
I had spoken to her.
Sung to her.
Dreamed about her.
When she was born, I had held her against my chest and cried.
I had known her face before I ever saw it.
And now Chloe was telling me she wasn't mine.
My entire reality had become impossible.
“Explain.”
Chloe nodded.
“The fertility clinic made a mistake.”
“A mistake?”
“A deliberate one.”
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?”
She took a breath.
“Daniel wasn't just having an affair with me.”
“I know.”
“He was running a plan.”
“What plan?”
“To create a child.”
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“Because he believed you couldn't have children.”
My blood ran cold.
“I was pregnant.”
“Daniel didn't know.”
“He knew I was pregnant.”
“Eventually.”
“Then why?”
“Because the pregnancy wasn't part of his plan.”
I shook my head.
“I don't understand.”
Chloe looked at Emma.
“Daniel wanted a biological heir.”
“He already had one.”
“Not when the plan started.”
She hesitated.
“He believed you were infertile.”
I remembered.
Four years earlier.
Our first year of marriage.
The doctor telling me there might be complications.
Daniel holding my hand.
Telling me it didn't matter.
Telling me he loved me.
Telling me we could always adopt.
Had that all been a lie?
Chloe continued.
“He asked the clinic to create an embryo using your eggs.”
I stared at her.
“My eggs?”
“Yes.”
“And his sperm?”
“No.”
My heart stopped.
“Whose?”
Chloe didn't answer.
I already knew the question was dangerous.
“Whose sperm?”
She looked away.
“Someone else.”
“Who?”
“I don't know.”
I grabbed her arm.
“Who?”
She pulled away.
“I don't know!”
Her voice broke.
“I swear.”
I took a breath.
“Then why did Daniel want an embryo using my eggs?”
“Because he wanted a child who was genetically connected to you.”
“That makes no sense.”
“It did to him.”
“Why?”
“He thought if you died…”
I froze.
“What?”
Chloe looked terrified.
“He believed he could control the inheritance.”
My blood turned to ice.
“Explain.”
“He wanted your family's assets.”
“I don't have a family fortune.”
Chloe shook her head.
“You do.”
I stared at her.
“My father died years ago.”
“Exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
“He didn't leave you what you thought he left you.”
She looked toward the garage entrance.
“Daniel discovered something about your father's estate.”
“What?”
“He found a trust.”
I felt dizzy.
“What trust?”
“One that doesn't mature until you have a biological heir.”
I stared at her.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“That isn't possible.”
“It is.”
“Why would Daniel know about it?”
“Because he hired someone to investigate your family.”
My hands began trembling.
“What was in the trust?”
Chloe looked at me.
“Thirty-two million dollars.”
I couldn't breathe.
Daniel had never cared about money.
At least that's what he always said.
He had told me he loved my simplicity.
He had joked that my family wasn't wealthy.
He had never asked about my father's estate.
Or so I thought.
Suddenly, dozens of memories rearranged themselves.
The questions.
The paperwork.
The strange interest in my medical history.
The insistence that I sign certain documents.
The fertility tests.
The insurance policies.
The life insurance policy he had taken out after our first anniversary.
I had thought it was normal.
Now I understood.
He hadn't been planning a family.
He had been planning ownership.
“Where does Emma fit into this?”
Chloe looked down.
“Emma was supposed to be the heir.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel believed she was yours.”
I stared at her.
“But you carried her.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because the embryo was transferred into me.”
“Why not me?”
“Because Daniel changed the clinic records.”
I closed my eyes.
“So Emma is genetically mine.”
“Yes.”
“And Lily?”
Chloe shook her head.
“Lily came from another embryo.”
“Whose?”
“We don't know.”
I looked at her.
“You expect me to believe two embryos were switched?”
“That's what happened.”
“Who switched them?”
“I don't know.”
“Daniel?”
Chloe hesitated.
“I thought it was him.”
“But?”
“But I found something.”
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a laboratory report.
Two embryo identification numbers.
One marked:
J.C. — Biological Mother
The other:
Unknown Donor
My hands shook.
“Where did you get this?”
“From Daniel's office.”
“Why?”
“Because he threatened me.”
I looked up.
“What?”
“He wanted Emma.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
“Because he believed she was the key to your inheritance.”
I stared at the document.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
Chloe looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“What did he threaten?”
“My life.”
I said nothing.
“He told me if I ever told you the truth, he'd make sure I lost Emma.”
I looked at the baby.
Emma was asleep.
Completely innocent.
“Does she know?”
“She knows nothing.”
“She thinks you're her mother.”
“I am her mother.”
“Biologically?”
“No.”
Chloe's voice broke.
“But I gave birth to her.”
I understood then.
Whatever Chloe had done with Daniel…
she loved Emma.
That complicated everything.
“Why did you agree to the embryo transfer?”
Chloe looked away.
“I was desperate.”
“For what?”
“I had lost everything after my divorce.”
“And Daniel offered help.”
“Yes.”
“He manipulated you.”
“Yes.”
“But you still slept with him.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She closed her eyes.
“Because I believed he loved me.”
The honesty of the answer hurt.
Not because I sympathized.
Because I understood.
I had believed the same man loved me.
We had both been wrong.
I sat on a concrete barrier.
“What happened to the other embryo?”
Chloe shook her head.
“We don't know.”
“Could it be Lily?”
“Yes.”
I looked at her.
“But if Lily is genetically unrelated to me…”
“Then she's the donor embryo.”
My heart broke.
“She still belongs to me.”
Chloe nodded.
“I know.”
“No matter whose DNA she has.”
“I know.”
I wiped my eyes.
“She is my daughter.”
Chloe whispered:
“And Emma is yours too.”
I looked at her.
The words were impossible.
Two babies.
Two women.
One man.
One stolen identity.
And a secret worth thirty-two million dollars.
My phone vibrated.
Daniel.
I rejected the call.
It rang again.
I rejected it.
Then a message appeared.
Daniel: We need to talk about Lily.
I looked at Chloe.
She had gone pale.
“What?”
I showed her the message.
She whispered:
“He knows.”
“How?”
“I don't know.”
Another message appeared.
Daniel: I know you met Chloe.
My blood ran cold.
Then:
Daniel: Bring the folder.
I stared at the screen.
Chloe shook her head.
“Don't answer.”
“I wasn't going to.”
“Jennifer…”
“What?”
“He isn't trying to save his marriage.”
“I know.”
“He's trying to find out what you know.”
“I know.”
She looked terrified.
“Then you need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because if Daniel knows about Emma…”
She looked toward the entrance.
“…he'll come for her.”
We left separately.
I took Lily.
Chloe took Emma.
Sarah met me at a private office thirty minutes later.
I placed the laboratory report on the table.
She read it.
Her expression changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Chloe.”
Sarah looked at me.
“You believe her?”
“I don't know.”
“That's dangerous.”
“I know.”
“Did she give you anything else?”
I shook my head.
“Then we need independent testing.”
“For both babies.”
“Yes.”
I stared at the paperwork.
“Can you arrange it?”
“Tonight.”
“Good.”
Sarah hesitated.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“If the results confirm what Chloe says…”
“I know.”
“You'll have two children.”
I looked down.
“I already have one.”
Sarah nodded.
“And maybe another.”
The next morning, I took Lily to the laboratory.
Chloe arrived separately with Emma.
We didn't tell Daniel.
The samples were collected.
Then we waited.
Four hours.
Five.
Six.
At 8:17 p.m., the doctor called.
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“We have preliminary results.”
My heart began pounding.
“Tell me.”
“There is no maternal genetic relationship between you and Lily.”
I closed my eyes.
I had prepared myself.
It still destroyed me.
“And Emma?”
There was silence.
Then:
“Your genetic relationship with Emma is consistent with biological motherhood.”
I couldn't breathe.
I sat down.
“Are you certain?”
“Yes.”
Two babies.
One mine.
One not mine.
And both had been born because of Daniel's secret.
I called Chloe.
She answered immediately.
“It's confirmed.”
Her voice broke.
“I know.”
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
I looked toward Lily's crib.
“She isn't mine.”
“She is your daughter.”
“Biologically…”
“No.”
I closed my eyes.
“But I love her.”
“I know.”
“And Emma?”
“She's yours.”
I whispered:
“I want both.”
Chloe began crying.
“So do I.”
Silence filled the line.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
“Where is Daniel's biological child?”
Chloe stopped crying.
“I don't know.”
“What?”
“There's another embryo.”
My blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?”
“The clinic created three embryos.”
“One became Emma.”
“Yes.”
“Lily came from the donor embryo.”
“Yes.”
“Then the third…”
Chloe whispered:
“Daniel took it.”
I stood.
“Where?”
“I don't know.”
“Chloe.”
“I swear.”
“Why would he take an embryo?”
“I don't know.”
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“Unless he planned another child.”
The next morning, Sarah found something.
A payment.
Made six weeks after Lily's birth.
To a private storage facility.
The description was:
Biological Material Storage — Annual Contract.
I stared at the document.
“Who's listed as the owner?”
Sarah looked at me.
“Daniel Carter.”
I felt sick.
“What biological material?”
“We're trying to find out.”
“Find out.”
“We need a court order.”
“Get one.”
Sarah nodded.
Then her phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She looked at me.
“The storage facility was accessed yesterday.”
“By whom?”
“Daniel.”
My blood ran cold.
“What did he take?”
Sarah's face became pale.
“We don't know.”
I stood.
“Then find out.”
She looked at me.
“Jennifer…”
“What?”
“There was only one item registered under Daniel's name.”
My heart pounded.
“What?”
“An embryo.”
I stared at her.
“Whose?”
She looked down at the report.
“Genetically, it's yours.”
I couldn't speak.
“What's more,” she continued, “the embryo contains Daniel's DNA.”
I closed my eyes.
Another child.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that Daniel had hidden.
But then Sarah said:
“There's one problem.”
“What?”
“The storage record says the embryo was transferred out yesterday.”
“Transferred where?”
She looked at me.
“An overseas fertility clinic.”
My blood ran cold.
“Which country?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Daniel's lawyer won't tell us.”
I stared at the wall.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Daniel's voice came through.
Calm.
Almost gentle.
“Jennifer.”
I said nothing.
“You know now, don't you?”
My blood froze.
“Know what?”
“About Emma.”
I gripped the phone.
“How much do you know?”
He laughed softly.
“Enough.”
“What did you do with the embryo?”
Silence.
Then:
“You're asking the wrong question.”
“What is the right question?”
His voice became cold.
“The right question is…”
He paused.
“…what happens when you discover who the donor embryo really belongs to?”
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because suddenly I understood.
The mystery wasn't only about Lily.
It wasn't only about Emma.
Daniel had been hiding a third child.
May you like
And whatever truth was attached to that child…
was something he was willing to destroy everything to protect.
