Chapter 5 — The Money He Stole From His Own Daughter

Chapter 5 — The Money He Stole From His Own Daughter

The first number Sarah showed me was $15,000.

The second was $42,000.

The third made my hands go numb.

$318,700.

I stared at the spreadsheet.

“What is that?”

Sarah didn't answer immediately.

“Money Daniel moved during your pregnancy.”

I looked at the rows.

One transfer.

Then another.

Then another.

Different accounts.

Different companies.

Different explanations.

But every trail led back to the same person.

Daniel.

I looked at Sarah.

“How much?”

She swallowed.

“We've identified approximately $318,700.”

“Approximately?”

“We're not finished.”

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because the number was so absurd that my mind couldn't accept it.

Three hundred thousand dollars.

While he told me we needed to save.

While he told me the stroller I wanted was too expensive.

While he complained about hospital bills.

While he said we couldn't afford a night nurse.

He had been moving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

And some of it had come directly from accounts intended for Lily.

My daughter.

The child he had sworn was his.

The child he had used to make himself look like a devoted father.

He hadn't simply betrayed me.

He had stolen from her.

Sarah turned the laptop toward me.

“This is the first account.”

It was a savings account opened in my name.

I frowned.

“I've never seen this.”

“I know.”

“Whose name is on it?”

“Yours.”

“Then how did Daniel access it?”

“Power of attorney.”

I stared at the screen.

“I never gave him power of attorney.”

Sarah nodded.

“That's why we're investigating the signature.”

My stomach tightened.

“You think he forged it?”

“We have reason to believe so.”

I leaned back.

“How much was in it?”

“$86,400.”

“How much is left?”

Sarah looked at me.

“Zero.”

I closed my eyes.

“Where did it go?”

“Multiple places.”

“Chloe?”

“Some.”

I opened my eyes.

“How much?”

“$15,000.”

I nodded.

“The amount I already knew.”

“Yes.”

“Where did the rest go?”

Sarah clicked another file.

“Business accounts.”

I frowned.

“Why would my personal savings go into his business?”

“That is exactly what we're trying to determine.”

The next three hours were a nightmare.

Every account revealed another layer.

Daniel had created shell companies.

Small consulting firms.

Investment accounts.

Private payment arrangements.

Some existed only on paper.

Others had real bank accounts.

Money moved between them constantly.

Sometimes it stayed for two days.

Sometimes two hours.

Then it disappeared.

I looked at one transaction.

$27,500 — Morgan Medical Consulting.

Another.

$18,000 — Carter Family Holdings.

Another.

$41,000 — Hale Advisory Services.

I froze.

“Hale?”

Sarah looked at me.

“Richard Hale.”

My father's former business partner.

The man Daniel had blamed for the embryo transfer.

“Why was Daniel paying Richard?”

“We don't know yet.”

“How much?”

Sarah entered the name into the search.

The screen filled with transactions.

I felt sick.

“That's impossible.”

“What?”

“Total it.”

She did.

Then she stared at the number.

“$174,000.”

I whispered:

“Daniel paid Richard $174,000.”

Sarah nodded.

“For what?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at the screen.

“Find out.”

That evening, I confronted Daniel.

He was staying at a hotel.

He opened the door looking exhausted.

When he saw me, he didn't look surprised.

“You found the money.”

“Yes.”

He stepped aside.

I entered.

His room was almost empty.

One suitcase.

A laptop.

Some clothes.

No photographs.

No personal belongings.

For the first time, he looked like a man who had already lost his home.

I put the bank statement on the table.

“What did you steal from Lily?”

His face changed.

“Jennifer…”

“Answer me.”

“I didn't steal from her.”

“You moved her money.”

“I was protecting it.”

“You transferred $86,400 from an account in my name.”

“It was part of the trust.”

“No.”

I pointed at the document.

“It was Lily's emergency fund.”

“I intended to replace it.”

“You always intended to replace it.”

He looked down.

“Why?”

“Because I was going to make it back.”

“How?”

He said nothing.

“Through the company?”

“Yes.”

“Through the shell companies?”

His head snapped up.

“You know about those?”

“I know enough.”

He sat down.

“You shouldn't have come here.”

“Why?”

“Because there are things you don't understand.”

“I understand that you stole money from your own daughter.”

“I was trying to save her.”

“From what?”

He looked at me.

“Your family.”

I stared at him.

“My family?”

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

“Your father left enemies.”

“So?”

“They wanted the trust.”

“Then why steal from it?”

“I wasn't stealing.”

“You moved hundreds of thousands.”

“To keep it safe.”

“By putting it into companies controlled by you?”

He didn't answer.

I leaned closer.

“Daniel, you don't get to call theft protection.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

That surprised me.

He looked defeated.

“I made mistakes.”

“You made choices.”

“Yes.”

“Repeatedly.”

“Yes.”

“While I was pregnant.”

“Yes.”

“While Lily was in the hospital.”

“Yes.”

“While you were telling everyone what a wonderful father you were.”

His voice cracked.

“Yes.”

I felt anger rise.

“What did you do with the money?”

He whispered:

“Some of it went to Chloe.”

“I know.”

“Some went to Richard.”

“I know.”

“Some went to the clinic.”

“I know.”

“Some went to lawyers.”

“Why?”

“To protect the trust.”

I shook my head.

“From whom?”

He looked at me.

“From me.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“I thought you would eventually leave.”

“And?”

“I wanted enough control to survive.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You were planning for my departure while pretending to build a family.”

He said nothing.

I turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

“One more question.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“Was Lily ever part of your plan?”

His face went pale.

“Yes.”

“What plan?”

He hesitated.

“She was supposed to be proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That the trust's conditions had been satisfied.”

I felt sick.

“You didn't care whether she was biologically yours.”

“No.”

“You just needed everyone to believe she was.”

“Yes.”

I stared at him.

“And if the truth came out?”

“I would have fixed it.”

“How?”

He looked away.

I knew then.

There had never been a real plan for Lily.

Only a contingency.

A child treated like a financial instrument.

I walked out.

The next morning, Sarah called.

“We found another account.”

“How much?”

“$210,000.”

I closed my eyes.

“Whose?”

“Lily's.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“An investment account opened shortly after her birth.”

“Who controls it?”

“Daniel.”

“Is there money left?”

“No.”

“Where did it go?”

Sarah paused.

“Three transfers.”

“To whom?”

“The first went to a company called Blue Harbor.”

“Amount?”

“$70,000.”

“Second?”

“$65,000 to Richard Hale.”

“And the third?”

Sarah's voice became quiet.

“$75,000.”

“To whom?”

“Chloe.”

I stared at the wall.

“Why would he give Chloe seventy-five thousand dollars?”

“We're checking.”

“Could it be for Emma?”

“Possibly.”

“Find out.”

The answer arrived that afternoon.

It wasn't for Emma.

It was for silence.

Sarah placed a recorded statement on the table.

We played it.

Daniel's voice filled the room.

“Chloe, take the money.”

Her voice answered:

“I don't want it.”

“You need it.”

“No.”

“If you talk, Jennifer will find out everything.”

“She deserves to know.”

“You don't understand.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“You'll lose Emma.”

Chloe began crying.

Daniel's voice became colder.

“Take the money.”

“Why are you doing this?”

“Because I'm trying to protect my family.”

“You don't have a family.”

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“I have two.”

The recording ended.

I sat perfectly still.

Two families.

Two lives.

Two women.

Two babies.

And one man trying to control all of them.

That evening, Chloe came to my apartment.

She looked terrified.

“I didn't know the money came from Lily's account.”

“I believe you.”

She stared at me.

“Why?”

“Because Daniel used everyone.”

She began crying.

“I should have stopped him.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I know.”

“But you're stopping now.”

She nodded.

“I'll tell you everything.”

I gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

She did.

“I didn't know about the trust until Daniel told me.”

“When?”

“After Emma was born.”

“Why did he tell you?”

“He wanted me to sign documents.”

“What documents?”

“Custody agreements.”

“For Emma?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He wanted legal control over her.”

My hands tightened.

“Why?”

“Because he believed she was the key to your inheritance.”

I nodded.

“That part I understand.”

Chloe hesitated.

“But there was something else.”

“What?”

“Daniel wasn't the only person moving money.”

I looked at her.

“Who else?”

She whispered:

“Your mother.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

Chloe nodded.

“She received payments.”

“How much?”

“I don't know.”

“Why?”

“Because Daniel told me she was part of the plan.”

I stood.

“What plan?”

Chloe looked at me.

“The plan to make you believe Lily was your biological daughter.”

I felt the room tilt.

“My mother knew?”

“I don't know how much.”

“But she received money.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Chloe reached into her bag.

She handed me another document.

I read the number.

$60,000.

My hands began shaking.

“When?”

“Before Lily was born.”

I stared at the date.

Three weeks before my delivery.

My mother had visited me every day.

She had held my hand.

She had bought tiny clothes for Lily.

She had cried when Lily was born.

And she had apparently received $60,000 from Daniel.

I couldn't breathe.

“Why?”

Chloe whispered:

“He told her it was for medical expenses.”

I shook my head.

“My mother doesn't need his money.”

“I know.”

“Then why did she take it?”

Chloe didn't answer.

I called my mother.

She answered immediately.

“Jennifer?”

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Did Daniel give you sixty thousand dollars?”

Silence.

My heart dropped.

“Mom?”

“I can explain.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then explain.”

She began crying.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

“Did you know?”

“I didn't know everything.”

“Did you know about Chloe?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know about the embryo?”

Silence.

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you know Lily wasn't biologically mine?”

Another silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

I sat down.

The room became completely silent.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Since before she was born.”

I couldn't speak.

My own mother.

The person who had held me while I cried.

The person who had told me Daniel loved me.

She had known.

And she had watched me raise a child who wasn't biologically mine without telling me.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because Daniel threatened you.”

“With what?”

“Your father's trust.”

I stared at the floor.

“He said if I told you, he would destroy the trust.”

“Why would you believe him?”

“Because he had documents.”

“What documents?”

“I don't know.”

“You took the money.”

“I was desperate.”

“For what?”

“To protect you.”

I laughed through tears.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

My mother cried.

“I thought I could fix it.”

“You couldn't.”

“I know.”

“You should have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“So was I.”

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“I am sorry.”

I closed my eyes.

“I don't know if I can forgive you.”

“I understand.”

“I need time.”

“I'll give you time.”

I hung up.

For several minutes, I didn't move.

Then I looked at Sarah.

“Find every payment.”

“From Daniel to my mother?”

“From Daniel to everyone.”

She nodded.

“Every account.”

“Every shell company.”

“Every transfer.”

“Every person.”

I looked at the folder.

“And find out how much of my daughter's money is gone.”

Sarah opened her laptop.

“I will.”

Two days later, the final calculation arrived.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

The total was:

$1,284,600.

Over one million dollars.

Taken from accounts connected to me.

Taken from Lily.

Taken from the trust.

Transferred through companies.

Paid to lawyers.

Paid to clinics.

Paid to Chloe.

Paid to Richard.

Paid to my mother.

Paid to people whose names I didn't recognize.

All while Daniel stood in front of our families and called himself a father.

I looked at Sarah.

“Can we recover it?”

“Most of it.”

“How?”

“Court orders.”

“Do it.”

She nodded.

“And Daniel?”

“What about him?”

“He has another account.”

I looked up.

“How much?”

She hesitated.

“Enough to change the case.”

“How much?”

“$3.7 million.”

I stared at her.

“Where?”

“Overseas.”

“Whose account?”

“Daniel's.”

“Can we freeze it?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because the account isn't in his name.”

“Whose name?”

Sarah looked at the document.

Then slowly raised her eyes.

“Lily's.”

I felt sick.

“Lily has a $3.7 million account?”

“Apparently.”

“Who created it?”

“Daniel.”

“When?”

Sarah checked.

“The day Lily was born.”

I stared at the account number.

Then I noticed something else.

A beneficiary.

My blood went cold.

“Sarah.”

“Yes?”

“Who's the beneficiary?”

She looked.

Then her face changed.

“Daniel.”

I stood.

“So the account is in Lily's name…”

“Yes.”

“But Daniel controls it.”

“Yes.”

“And if Lily dies…”

Sarah looked at me.

“…the money goes to him.”

I couldn't breathe.

The room suddenly felt freezing.

Daniel hadn't just stolen money.

He had built a financial structure around my daughter.

And for the first time, I understood why he had been so determined to make everyone believe Lily was his.

It wasn't only about inheritance.

It wasn't only about appearances.

He had made Lily the centerpiece of a plan worth millions.

And somewhere beneath all those accounts, contracts, embryos, and lies…

was a purpose I still hadn't uncovered.

I picked up the phone.

“Sarah.”

“Yes?”

“Freeze everything.”

“Even Lily's account?”

“Especially Lily's.”

“And Daniel?”

I looked toward the nursery.

“Take away every dollar he can use to control my daughter.”

I paused.

Then added:

“And find out what happens to that $3.7 million if Daniel doesn't get it.”

Sarah looked at me.

“I think I know where we're going to find the answer.”

“Where?”

She turned the laptop toward me.

A document had appeared on the screen.

An old trust agreement.

My father's signature.

And one sentence highlighted in red.

In the event of fraud, the entire inheritance shall transfer to the biological daughter of Jennifer Carter.

I stared at the words.

Then I understood.

Daniel had spent years stealing money because he believed Lily was his path to the fortune.

But if Emma was my biological daughter…

then the money he had stolen had never belonged to him.

And now the person who stood to inherit everything wasn't Lily.

It wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Chloe.

It wasn't even me.

It was Emma.

The daughter Daniel had hidden.

The daughter he had tried to control.

The daughter he had used another woman to carry.

And suddenly, the $3.7 million account didn't look like the end of the story.

It looked like the first piece of evidence in a much larger crime.

Because if Daniel had stolen more than a million dollars from my family…

I was beginning to suspect that someone had stolen far more from my father.

May you like

And the person who knew where the rest had gone…

was Richard Hale.
