Chapter 4 — The DNA Test Daniel Never Expected

Chapter 4 — The DNA Test Daniel Never Expected
The envelope arrived at 7:43 on a Monday morning.
It was thin.
Ordinary.
Almost harmless.
Yet I stared at it for nearly a minute before touching it.
Inside that envelope was the answer to the question that had been haunting me since the night I opened Daniel's folder.
Not whether he had betrayed me.
I already knew that.
Not whether he had lied.
I had enough evidence to bury him in lies.
The question was much more frightening.
Who was Lily?
And why had Daniel gone to such extraordinary lengths to keep me from knowing?
Sarah stood across the kitchen.
“Jennifer.”
I looked at her.
“You don't have to open it alone.”
“I know.”
She came closer.
“Whatever it says, we'll deal with it.”
I nodded.
Then I opened the envelope.
The first report was for Lily.
I read the result.
No biological relationship between Jennifer Carter and Lily Carter.
I already knew.
But seeing the words printed on paper felt different.
It made the impossible permanent.
I closed my eyes.
For nine months, I had carried a baby who wasn't genetically mine.
But biology wasn't what made me a mother.
I remembered the first time Lily cried.
The first night I stayed awake beside her crib.
The first bottle.
The first smile.
The way her tiny hand wrapped around my finger.
None of that was DNA.
I looked at the second report.
Emma.
Biological relationship between Jennifer Carter and Emma Morgan: confirmed.
My hands trembled.
One daughter I had raised.
One daughter I had never known.
Both had been stolen from me in different ways.
Sarah watched me carefully.
“There's more.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“The laboratory ran additional testing.”
“Why?”
“Because we asked them to compare both babies against Daniel.”
My heart stopped.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I wanted the results first.”
She pushed another page toward me.
I read it.
Then read it again.
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
“Daniel is not Lily's biological father.”
Sarah nodded.
“I know.”
I looked at the next line.
Daniel Carter is the biological father of Emma Morgan.
I stopped breathing.
“Emma…”
“Is Daniel's daughter.”
I sat down.
The room spun.
Daniel had spent months pretending Chloe's baby was his.
But he had lied about something even bigger.
Emma was his.
The baby he had never publicly claimed.
The baby he had hidden.
The baby he had tried to turn into an inheritance weapon.
And Lily…
Lily wasn't his.
Or mine.
Then who was Lily's biological father?
Sarah sat across from me.
“There was another test.”
My hands went cold.
“What?”
“The lab compared Lily's DNA against the donor database.”
I looked up.
“And?”
“Nothing.”
“No match?”
“No registered match.”
“So she's from an anonymous donor.”
“Possibly.”
I stared at the report.
“But Daniel arranged the embryo.”
“Yes.”
“Then why would he use an anonymous donor?”
Sarah shook her head.
“We don't know.”
I looked toward the baby monitor.
Lily was sleeping.
Peacefully.
As if the world wasn't changing around her.
I whispered:
“She doesn't know.”
“No.”
“She doesn't know any of this.”
“She doesn't need to.”
I nodded.
Whatever happened next, Lily would remain my daughter.
DNA could explain where a person came from.
It could never erase who had raised them.
At 9:15, Daniel called.
I didn't answer.
He called again.
I ignored him.
A third time.
Then a message appeared.
Daniel: We need to talk.
I typed back.
Jennifer: We do.
His reply came immediately.
Daniel: About Lily.
I stared at the screen.
I wrote:
Jennifer: No. About Emma.
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Appeared again.
Disappeared.
Finally:
Daniel: Where did you hear that name?
I smiled.
That was all the confirmation I needed.
I called Sarah.
“Get me an emergency appointment with the judge.”
“Why?”
“I want temporary protective orders for both children.”
“You believe Daniel is a danger?”
“I believe he has spent years manipulating medical records, money, and people to control a child who wasn't even biologically his.”
Sarah went silent.
“That's enough.”
Daniel arrived at my apartment before the lawyer could.
He stood outside the door.
I didn't let him in.
“Jennifer.”
“What?”
“Please.”
“No.”
“I need to explain.”
“You've had years.”
He swallowed.
“You know about Emma.”
“Yes.”
“You don't understand.”
“I understand enough.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You think Emma is your daughter.”
“She is.”
“And you think that makes everything simple.”
I stared at him.
“It doesn't?”
His eyes moved toward the nursery.
“Where is Lily?”
“Inside.”
“Can I see her?”
“No.”
His face tightened.
“She is my daughter.”
“No.”
“I am her father.”
“You aren't.”
His expression changed.
“You got the test.”
“Yes.”
He looked down.
For the first time, he had no defense.
Then he whispered:
“I knew.”
I felt something break inside me.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Since before she was born.”
I couldn't speak.
“You knew Lily wasn't yours.”
“Yes.”
“And you let me raise her believing she was?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because I needed you to love her.”
I stared at him.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does.”
“No, Daniel.”
My voice hardened.
“You didn't need me to love her.”
He said nothing.
“You needed me to believe she was yours.”
He looked away.
“Why?”
Silence.
“Why, Daniel?”
Finally, he whispered:
“Because if Lily was yours and mine, the trust would remain under our control.”
My blood ran cold.
“What trust?”
He closed his eyes.
“The one your father left you.”
I felt dizzy.
“You knew about my father's trust.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your father told me.”
I stared at him.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
“My father hated you.”
“He didn't.”
“He did.”
“He pretended to.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew what I was planning.”
I stepped closer.
“What were you planning?”
Daniel's eyes filled with something I couldn't identify.
Fear.
Regret.
Maybe both.
“To protect myself.”
“From what?”
“From your father.”
I shook my head.
“My father is dead.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you still afraid of him?”
Daniel whispered:
“Because he wasn't the man you thought he was.”
That sentence stopped me.
“My father loved me.”
“I know.”
“He protected me.”
“I know.”
“He left me everything.”
Daniel nodded.
“Except the truth.”
I stared at him.
“What truth?”
Before he could answer, Sarah arrived.
She saw Daniel.
Then me.
Then the tension between us.
“What happened?”
I looked at her.
“He knows about the trust.”
Sarah's expression hardened.
“Then he knows about the third clause.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You found it.”
Sarah stepped beside me.
“Yes.”
“What third clause?”
I looked at Daniel.
“You tell me.”
He laughed bitterly.
“You still don't know.”
“Know what?”
“The trust doesn't mature because you have a child.”
I frowned.
“Then what?”
“It matures when you have a biological daughter who survives infancy and remains legally recognized as your heir.”
I felt cold.
Emma.
My biological daughter.
The daughter Daniel had hidden.
Suddenly everything made sense.
He hadn't wanted a child.
He had wanted access to my inheritance.
And because I had given birth to Lily instead of Emma…
his plan had failed.
So he had hidden Emma.
He had made sure I didn't know she existed.
And he had raised Lily publicly as his daughter because he needed everyone to believe the inheritance condition had been fulfilled.
But why had he needed Chloe?
I looked at him.
“Why was Emma born to Chloe?”
Daniel said nothing.
“Why did you transfer my embryo into her?”
Still nothing.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because your father wouldn't let me.”
I stared at him.
“My father was dead.”
“Not when this began.”
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Then at me.
“Your father arranged everything.”
The words hit harder than a slap.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“My father would never do this.”
“He did.”
“You're lying.”
“I have proof.”
He reached into his jacket.
Sarah immediately stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Daniel stopped.
“I'm not here to hurt anyone.”
“Then put the document on the floor.”
He did.
Sarah picked it up.
Inside was an old letter.
My father's handwriting.
I recognized it immediately.
My hands shook as I read.
Daniel,
If you truly intend to marry my daughter, understand this: you will never control her inheritance.
The trust belongs to Jennifer alone.
No husband, child, or relative can access it without her consent.
I looked at Daniel.
“That proves you had no right to it.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
I continued reading.
Then I saw the final paragraph.
If Jennifer ever becomes pregnant, all medical decisions concerning her reproductive material must remain under her control.
I looked up.
“Then why did you violate it?”
Daniel's eyes dropped.
“Because I was desperate.”
“For money?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
He looked at me.
“For my life.”
I didn't understand.
He continued.
“Your father had evidence against me.”
“What evidence?”
“He knew I had been laundering money.”
My heart stopped.
“You were already stealing?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Not much at first.”
“Then?”
“It grew.”
Sarah looked at him.
“You were involved in financial fraud before the marriage.”
“Yes.”
I felt sick.
“So you didn't marry me because you loved me.”
“I loved you.”
“But you also wanted protection.”
“Yes.”
“And my inheritance.”
“Yes.”
“Then you never loved me.”
Daniel looked broken.
“I did.”
I shook my head.
“Maybe you loved me.”
He didn't respond.
“But you loved money more.”
He looked toward the nursery.
“Can I see Emma?”
I froze.
“You don't get to see her.”
“She is my daughter.”
“So was Lily.”
“I know.”
“And you lied.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to Chloe.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to your parents.”
“Yes.”
“You lied to everyone.”
He whispered:
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Then why should I believe anything you say now?”
“You shouldn't.”
The honesty surprised me.
He continued:
“That's why I'm giving you everything.”
“What?”
“All the documents.”
He handed Sarah another folder.
She opened it.
Inside were bank records.
Emails.
Medical documents.
Names.
Dates.
And photographs.
Sarah's face changed as she turned page after page.
“What is this?”
Daniel answered:
“Everything.”
Then I saw a photograph.
My father.
Daniel.
And another man.
I knew the third man.
My father's former business partner.
Richard Hale.
I hadn't seen him in years.
“Why is he here?”
Daniel's face hardened.
“Because Richard was the one who arranged the embryo transfer.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Richard knew about the trust.”
Sarah looked up.
“Why would he help Daniel?”
“He didn't.”
I frowned.
“Then why?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Because Richard was trying to protect you.”
Everything became more complicated.
My father.
Daniel.
Richard.
The trust.
The clinic.
Three embryos.
Two babies.
One stolen identity.
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened to the third embryo?”
His face went pale.
“I don't know.”
“You said you knew.”
“I knew it existed.”
“Where is it?”
“I don't know.”
Sarah looked at the documents.
“Then why was it transferred overseas?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I didn't authorize that.”
“Someone used your name.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
He looked toward the door.
“Richard.”
I felt cold.
“Richard took the embryo?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel's expression changed.
“Because the embryo wasn't just yours.”
“What do you mean?”
“It was created from your egg.”
“And?”
“Your father's sperm.”
I stopped breathing.
Sarah went completely still.
“What?”
Daniel whispered:
“Your father was the donor.”
The room fell silent.
My mind refused to process the words.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“That is impossible.”
“I know how it sounds.”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“That cannot be true.”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father had a genetic disease.”
I stared at him.
“He created a biological backup.”
“For what?”
Daniel's voice dropped.
“For you.”
I couldn't breathe.
“You're saying my father created an embryo using his own genetic material and mine?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he knew he was dying.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“He wanted to create a child who would carry his bloodline.”
I looked toward the nursery.
Then at Daniel.
“Then Lily…”
“No.”
“Emma?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Daniel whispered:
“The third child.”
The world went silent.
My father's blood.
My DNA.
An embryo created before my marriage.
Hidden from me.
Transferred overseas.
And now missing.
I looked at Sarah.
“We have to find it.”
She nodded.
But Daniel suddenly grabbed the edge of the table.
His face had gone pale.
“What?”
He looked at his phone.
A message had arrived.
He read it.
Then handed me the screen.
I read the message.
THE EMBRYO HAS BEEN IMPLANTED.
Below it was another line.
THE CHILD WILL BE BORN IN SIX MONTHS.
My blood froze.
I looked at Daniel.
“Who sent this?”
He shook his head.
“I don't know.”
I stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
And Jennifer…
I waited.
Your father never intended the child to belong to you.
My heart stopped.
A final message appeared.
He intended the child to replace you.
I looked up.
Daniel was staring at me.
And for the first time, I understood that the DNA test had not answered the mystery.
It had only opened the door.
Behind it was a secret my father had buried.
A secret Daniel had exploited.
A secret Chloe had been trapped inside.
And somewhere in the world, an unborn child was carrying my DNA and my father's blood.
May you like
But someone wanted that child for themselves.
And they were willing to do anything to make sure I never found out why.
