Chapter 1 — The Hospital Floor

Chapter 1 — The Hospital Floor
The first thing Marcus Hale noticed was the silence.
Not the quiet silence of a hospital at night.
Not the peaceful silence of sleeping patients and dim hallway lights.
This was the kind of silence that came after something terrible had already happened.
The kind where people stopped breathing because they were afraid of what they would see next.
Marcus stood outside the private maternity suite, his hand still gripping the door handle.
Three minutes earlier, he had received the call.
A nurse.
A frightened voice.
A sentence he would never forget.
“Mr. Hale, you need to come to the hospital immediately. It’s your wife.”
No explanation.
No details.
Just those words.
And now…
His world had stopped.
Because his wife was lying on the cold marble floor.
“Khloe.”
Her name escaped his mouth like a prayer.
He barely remembered crossing the room.
One second he was standing at the doorway.
The next, he was on his knees beside her.
“Khloe, look at me.”
Her eyes opened slowly.
For a moment, confusion crossed her face.
Then relief.
“Marcus…”
“I’m here.”
His hands shook as he touched her shoulders.
“I’m right here.”
But Khloe wasn’t looking at him.
She was looking down.
At her stomach.
At their daughter.
Their unborn child.
“My baby…”
Marcus felt his heart break.
“She’s okay,” he said quickly, even though he didn’t know if that was true.
“She’s going to be okay.”
But Khloe grabbed his hand.
Her fingers were weak.
Cold.
“Marcus…”
Her voice was barely above a whisper.
“I didn’t fall.”
He froze.
“What?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t fall.”
A nurse rushed closer.
“Ma’am, save your strength.”
But Khloe held onto Marcus.
“She pushed me.”
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed everything.
Marcus slowly looked up.
And saw Isabella.
Standing near the window.
The woman who had once been the center of his life.
The woman he had spent years trying to forget.
The woman who had just walked back into his world carrying a lie.
Isabella’s face changed instantly.
Shock.
Pain.
Fear.
Perfectly arranged emotions.
At least, that was what Marcus thought.
Because he knew Isabella.
He knew how convincing she could be.
“I can’t believe she said that.”
Isabella’s voice trembled.
Marcus didn’t answer.
“She’s blaming me?”
Still nothing.
“I was trying to help her.”
The nurse looked between them.
“What happened here?”
Isabella stepped forward immediately.
“She slipped.”
Marcus looked at her.
Just seconds ago:
“She pushed me.”
Now:
“She slipped.”
Something inside him tightened.
“Which one is it?”
Isabella blinked.
“What?”
Marcus stood slowly.
“Did she attack you?”
“No, I mean—”
“Or did she slip?”
Isabella opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
For the first time...
She had no prepared answer.
The medical team arrived.
The room became chaos.
Doctors rushed toward Khloe.
One checked her blood pressure.
Another monitored the baby.
“Possible placental injury.”
The words made Marcus go cold.
“Doctor?”
“We need to move her now.”
Khloe reached for him.
Marcus grabbed her hand.
“I’m coming with you.”
A doctor stopped him.
“Sir, you need to let us work.”
“But—”
“Your wife needs us focused.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
She was scared.
Terrified.
But she nodded.
Because she trusted him.
And because she trusted that he would find the truth.
The doors closed.
The red emergency light turned on.
And Marcus was left outside.
Waiting.
With Isabella.
For several moments, neither spoke.
Then Isabella whispered:
“You really think I did that?”
Marcus stared at the operating room.
“My wife is fighting to save our daughter.”
His voice was empty.
“And you’re worried about what I think?”
Isabella’s expression hardened.
“I knew this would happen.”
Marcus turned.
“What?”
“She would turn you against me.”
A strange calm came over him.
“Khloe is unconscious.”
Isabella stopped.
“She cannot manipulate me right now.”
That sentence hurt her more than anger would have.
Because Marcus wasn’t defending Khloe.
He was simply stating a fact.
Isabella crossed her arms.
“You don’t know everything.”
“No.”
Marcus looked at her.
“I know enough.”
Her eyes narrowed.
“You always believed you were saving people.”
“What does that mean?”
“You left me because you thought I was the problem.”
Marcus said nothing.
Because he remembered.
He remembered the screaming arguments.
The accusations.
The constant suspicion.
The way Isabella could turn every situation into a battle.
But he had spent years convincing himself it was just a bad relationship.
A mistake.
A chapter that was over.
Until today.
“You came here for a reason.”
Marcus said.
Isabella looked away.
“I wanted to talk.”
“About what?”
Silence.
Then:
“You.”
Marcus laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“My wife is in surgery because of you, and you came here to talk about me?”
Before Isabella could respond, footsteps approached.
A tall man in a dark security uniform walked toward them.
“Mr. Hale?”
Marcus turned.
“Yes?”
The man held out his identification.
“Daniel Cruz. Hospital Security Director.”
Marcus frowned.
“What happened?”
Daniel looked toward the operating room.
Then at Isabella.
“I believe you need to see something.”
He lifted a tablet.
The screen showed the hallway outside the maternity suite.
Marcus watched.
At first, nothing happened.
Khloe entered.
A few minutes later…
Isabella appeared.
Marcus leaned closer.
The footage continued.
Isabella entered the private suite.
Then the door closed.
Several minutes passed.
Then Khloe appeared again.
But this time...
Isabella was holding her arm.
Hard.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Daniel paused the video.
“Keep watching.”
The footage continued.
Isabella pulled Khloe backward.
Khloe tried to remove her hand.
Then—
The push.
Not an accident.
Not a fall.
A deliberate attack.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Unable to speak.
But the worst part came afterward.
The video showed Isabella looking around.
Checking the hallway.
Then moving things inside the room.
Changing the scene.
Creating a story.
Marcus whispered:
“She staged it.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel hesitated.
“Because she thought nobody would see.”
Marcus looked at Isabella.
She was watching him.
And she knew.
The lie was gone.
“No.”
Isabella whispered.
Marcus turned.
“No what?”
“You don’t understand.”
Her voice changed.
Not the confident Isabella.
The desperate one.
“You don’t know why I did it.”
Marcus stared.
“Then tell me.”
For several seconds, Isabella said nothing.
Then she whispered:
“Because that baby should have been mine.”
Marcus froze.
“What?”
Isabella’s eyes filled with anger and pain.
“You don’t remember, do you?”
“What are you talking about?”
She stepped closer.
“You destroyed everything when you left me.”
Before Marcus could answer, the operating room doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A doctor stepped out.
Marcus ran forward.
“Doctor?”
The doctor removed his mask.
“Your wife is stable.”
Marcus nearly collapsed with relief.
“But…”
The word stopped him.
“The baby is still in danger.”
The hallway became silent again.
Marcus looked through the glass.
Khloe.
Their daughter.
Still fighting.
Then he looked back at Isabella.
And for the first time, he understood.
This was never about jealousy.
Never about anger.
Never about an old relationship.
Isabella believed she had lost something that belonged to her.
And she was willing to destroy anyone standing between her and that belief.
Daniel quietly lowered the tablet.
“There’s more.”
Marcus looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel hesitated.
“We found evidence she had been planning this for weeks.”
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
Weeks.
Not a moment of rage.
Not an accident.
A plan.
And somewhere inside that plan…
May you like
Was the reason Isabella was truly after Khloe.
