Chapter 5 — The Battle Outside the Courtroom

Chapter 5 — The Battle Outside the Courtroom
The courtroom battle began before anyone entered the courtroom.
It began in newspapers.
On television screens.
On every social media page where strangers believed they knew the truth after watching a thirty-second video clip.
And Isabella Moretti understood something Marcus had forgotten.
People did not always believe facts first.
They believed stories.
Three days after the hospital attack, Marcus woke up to hundreds of notifications on his phone.
At first, he thought there had been another medical emergency.
Then he saw the headlines.
And felt his stomach drop.
“Former Lover Claims Pregnant Woman Started Violent Confrontation.”
“Is Isabella Moretti The Real Victim?”
“Family Drama Behind Hospital Assault Raises Questions.”
Marcus stared at the screen.
Questions.
That was the word people used when they wanted to avoid saying the truth.
There was no question.
There was a video.
There was evidence.
There was a woman lying in a hospital bed because Isabella wanted to rewrite reality.
But the public did not know everything.
And Isabella knew exactly how to use that.
“Turn it off.”
Khloe’s weak voice came from the hospital bed.
Marcus looked up.
She was awake.
Her face was pale, but her eyes were clear.
“You’re reading them again.”
Marcus locked the phone.
“I just wanted to know what they were saying.”
Khloe looked at him.
“No.”
Her voice was quiet.
“You wanted to see how many people believed her.”
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because she was right.
Khloe reached for his hand.
“Marcus.”
He sat beside her.
“You can’t fight every person who believes a lie.”
“I can fight Isabella.”
“Yes.”
Khloe squeezed his fingers.
“But don’t let her turn you into someone who only knows how to fight.”
For a moment, Marcus saw the woman he loved.
Not the victim.
Not the person everyone was protecting.
Khloe was still Khloe.
Strong.
Calm.
The person who had always made him think clearly.
But then the door opened.
Detective Grant entered.
And the calm disappeared.
“We have a problem.”
Marcus stood.
“What happened?”
Detective Grant placed a folder on the table.
“Isabella’s attorney filed a motion claiming the security footage was incomplete.”
Marcus frowned.
“Incomplete?”
“They claim the video only shows part of the incident.”
Daniel Cruz, who had followed the detective inside, shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Detective Grant nodded.
“We know.”
“Then why are they saying it?”
The detective looked serious.
“Because they don’t need to prove the video is fake.”
She opened the folder.
“They only need to create doubt.”
Marcus stared at the papers.
That was the strategy.
Not proving Isabella was innocent.
Making people wonder if she was.
That afternoon, Victor Lang held a press conference.
The same lawyer who had defended celebrities, politicians, and billionaires.
He stood behind a row of microphones.
Beside him sat Isabella.
Wearing a simple white dress.
No expensive jewelry.
No dramatic makeup.
Nothing that suggested wealth.
Only sadness.
It was carefully designed.
“I want to begin by saying that violence is never acceptable.”
Victor looked directly at the cameras.
“But we must also remember that accusations can destroy innocent lives.”
Marcus watched from the hospital television.
His jaw tightened.
“My client went to the hospital hoping to have a peaceful conversation.”
Victor continued.
“She was attacked by a woman experiencing extreme emotional distress.”
Khloe’s expression changed.
She looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
Because those words were not just an attack on her.
They were an attempt to erase what happened.
Victor continued.
“My client believes the truth will eventually come out.”
Then Isabella spoke.
“I never wanted this.”
Her voice broke.
“I only wanted closure.”
Marcus almost turned away.
Because he recognized that voice.
The voice Isabella used when she wanted people to feel sorry for her.
Then she said something that made him freeze.
“I lost my family once.”
A pause.
“And now I’m being blamed for wanting answers.”
Marcus looked at Khloe.
Because now he understood.
The baby.
The pregnancy.
The past.
Isabella was building a story.
A story where she was not an attacker.
She was a mother who lost everything.
That night, Marcus received a message.
From an unknown number.
A photo was attached.
His old apartment.
Six years ago.
The place where he and Isabella lived.
Below it was a message:
You don’t remember what happened there.
Marcus stared.
Then another message appeared.
Ask Isabella about the night she lost our child.
Marcus felt a chill.
Someone else was involved.
Someone who knew the past.
The next morning, court documents were officially filed.
Isabella was facing serious charges.
But she was also filing a civil claim.
The claim shocked everyone.
She was demanding access to information about Marcus’s unborn child.
Marcus read the document twice.
Then a third time.
“This is impossible.”
Detective Grant looked grim.
“She is claiming emotional connection.”
“She has no legal relationship.”
“Not yet.”
Marcus looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Detective Grant hesitated.
“It means she may attempt to prove something.”
The room became silent.
Then Marcus understood.
The DNA test.
The questions.
The attack.
Isabella was trying to create a legal argument that she belonged in their lives.
Later that evening, Khloe finally asked the question Marcus feared.
“Do you think she believes the baby is hers?”
Marcus sat beside her.
“I don’t know.”
Khloe looked down.
“But she does.”
Marcus looked at her.
“How do you know?”
Khloe touched her stomach.
“Because someone who only wanted revenge would have hurt me and stopped.”
She swallowed.
“She didn’t stop.”
A tear fell down her cheek.
“She wanted something.”
Marcus took her hand.
“We’ll find out what.”
Meanwhile…
Inside her apartment, Isabella watched the same news coverage.
But she was not crying.
She was smiling.
Because despite everything…
People were listening.
Victor walked into the room.
“You need to be careful.”
Isabella looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because the more we investigate, the more questions appear.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
Victor frowned.
“Good?”
“Yes.”
She looked at the photograph of Marcus.
“Questions are where the truth begins.”
Victor stared at her.
“You still believe this will end with you getting Marcus back?”
Isabella was silent.
Then she answered:
“No.”
A pause.
“I believe it ends with Marcus losing the life he built without me.”
Outside her window, the city lights reflected across the glass.
And somewhere across town…
Marcus held Khloe’s hand, unaware that Isabella’s next move would not be in the courtroom.
May you like
It would be inside his own family.
