Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Lied

Chapter 2 — The Woman Who Lied
The first lie Isabella told was that she was innocent.
The second lie was that she was the victim.
And the most dangerous lie of all…
Was the one she told herself.
That she still deserved a place in Marcus Hale’s life.
The hospital hallway remained frozen long after the doctor disappeared behind the operating room doors.
Marcus stood there staring at the red emergency light above the entrance.
His wife was inside.
His daughter was inside.
And the woman responsible was standing only a few feet away pretending she had been hurt too.
“I need to speak with you.”
The voice came from Detective Olivia Grant.
Marcus turned.
He had not even noticed the police arriving.
Two officers stood behind her.
One carried a notebook.
The other carried a body camera.
“Mr. Hale, I understand this is difficult.”
Marcus looked toward the operating room.
“My wife almost lost our child.”
Detective Grant nodded.
“I know.”
She glanced at Isabella.
“That is why we need to get the facts immediately.”
Isabella stepped forward.
“Finally.”
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Someone is listening.”
Marcus looked at her.
The confidence was back.
The performance had started again.
Detective Grant turned toward Isabella.
“Ms. Moretti, please explain what happened.”
Isabella took a slow breath.
“I came here because Marcus asked to speak with me.”
Marcus frowned.
“I never contacted you.”
She looked hurt.
“Marcus…”
“Don’t.”
His voice stopped her.
Detective Grant noticed.
“Continue.”
Isabella swallowed.
“I came because he wanted closure.”
A lie.
A simple one.
But a useful one.
“I saw Khloe.”
“She became aggressive.”
“She accused me of trying to steal her husband.”
“She attacked me.”
Marcus stared at her.
“She attacked you?”
Isabella nodded.
“Yes.”
“She pushed me first.”
Detective Grant looked down at her notes.
“And then what happened?”
Isabella looked toward the operating room.
“I defended myself.”
Marcus almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“You pushed a pregnant woman onto a marble floor.”
Isabella’s eyes flashed.
“You weren’t there.”
Marcus stepped closer.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“But the camera was.”
For the first time…
Isabella went silent.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
Detective Grant noticed.
“You knew there were cameras?”
Isabella recovered quickly.
“Of course not.”
“Then why did your expression change?”
No answer.
Daniel Cruz arrived carrying the tablet.
Detective Grant watched the footage.
Once.
Then again.
Then a third time.
Nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing to argue.
The truth was right there.
Isabella grabbing Khloe.
Dragging her.
Pushing her.
Then arranging the room.
Detective Grant slowly lowered the tablet.
“Ms. Moretti.”
Isabella looked at her.
“You are under investigation for assault.”
The color disappeared from Isabella’s face.
“Investigation?”
Detective Grant nodded.
“Depending on the condition of the victim and the child, charges may become significantly more serious.”
“Attempted murder?”
The word came from Marcus.
Everyone looked at him.
Marcus’s face was emotionless.
“If my daughter dies because of what she did…”
He stopped.
He could not finish.
He didn’t need to.
Isabella looked at him.
And for the first time...
She looked afraid.
Two hours later.
The hospital room was quieter.
Khloe had survived surgery.
The doctors had stabilized the injury.
But she remained unconscious.
The baby’s condition was improving slowly.
Every heartbeat was a victory.
Every second was a battle.
Marcus sat beside Khloe.
Holding her hand.
“You scared me.”
His voice cracked.
“You really scared me.”
He looked at her face.
The woman who had changed his life.
The woman who had given him a reason to believe love could be peaceful.
“I should have protected you.”
A tear fell onto his hand.
“I should have seen her coming.”
Behind him, the door opened.
Dr. Alexander Hale entered.
Marcus looked up.
His uncle removed his coat.
“She’s stable.”
Marcus nodded.
“Thank you.”
Alexander looked at him carefully.
“You know this wasn’t your fault.”
Marcus looked away.
“I brought Isabella into our lives.”
“No.”
Alexander’s voice was firm.
“She chose violence.”
Marcus said nothing.
Because part of him still struggled with the truth.
Not because he believed Isabella.
But because accepting the truth meant accepting something painful.
The person he once loved was capable of something terrible.
Outside the hospital.
Isabella sat inside a black car.
Her lawyer sat beside her.
A man named Victor Lang.
One of the most expensive defense attorneys in the city.
“She has the footage,” Isabella said.
Victor remained calm.
“Yes.”
“And?”
“And we change the story.”
Isabella looked at him.
“How?”
Victor opened a folder.
Inside were printed photographs.
Old photographs.
Marcus and Isabella.
Before Khloe.
“You were together for six years.”
“Yes.”
“You lived together.”
“Yes.”
“You had a future planned.”
Isabella looked down.
“Yes.”
Victor leaned closer.
“The public does not see a violent woman.”
He paused.
“They see a woman who lost everything.”
Isabella’s eyes narrowed.
“You think people will believe that?”
Victor smiled.
“People believe the story that makes them feel something.”
The next morning, the headlines appeared.
“Pregnant Heiress Accuses Former Lover’s Wife of Attacking Her.”
“Was Hospital Incident a Personal Rivalry?”
“Family Drama Turns Violent Behind Luxury Hospital Doors.”
Marcus saw the articles while sitting beside Khloe.
His anger grew.
“They’re making her the victim.”
Daniel stood nearby.
“Your ex has money.”
Marcus looked at him.
“She has no evidence.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Evidence is not always what wins.”
Marcus frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at the news.
“It means she has been preparing longer than you think.”
Later that day, detectives searched Isabella’s apartment.
They expected to find something obvious.
They found something worse.
A folder.
Inside:
Khloe’s medical schedule.
Hospital maps.
Marcus’s daily routine.
Photos of their home.
Notes about the baby.
Detective Grant stared at the evidence.
“This wasn’t spontaneous.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“It was obsession.”
That evening, Marcus finally returned to the hospital room.
Khloe’s eyes opened.
Weakly.
Slowly.
“Marcus…”
He immediately stood.
“I’m here.”
She looked around.
Then panic appeared.
“Where is Isabella?”
Marcus froze.
“She’s gone.”
Khloe grabbed his hand.
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“You don’t understand.”
“What?”
Khloe looked terrified.
“She didn’t come here because of you.”
Marcus frowned.
“Then why?”
Khloe swallowed.
“She asked me about the baby.”
A cold feeling spread through him.
“When?”
“Before she attacked me.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“What did she ask?”
Khloe’s eyes filled with fear.
“She asked…”
A pause.
“If the baby was really yours.”
The room became silent.
Marcus felt his heart stop.
Because suddenly everything made sense.
The attack.
The obsession.
The planning.
Isabella was not trying to destroy Khloe’s marriage.
She was trying to destroy the truth about the child.
And Marcus realized something terrifying.
The hospital attack was not Isabella’s final move.
May you like
It was only the beginning.
