Chapter 12 — Marcus’s Greatest Fear

Chapter 12 — Marcus’s Greatest Fear

Marcus had spent his entire life believing he understood fear.

He knew the fear of losing someone.

He knew the fear of failure.

He knew the fear of standing helpless while someone he loved suffered.

But he discovered something worse.

A different kind of fear.

The fear of realizing the person you trusted most had been preparing your destruction while you were thanking them for saving you.

The courthouse emptied slowly after the shocking testimony.

Reporters surrounded the entrance.

Questions came from every direction.

“Mr. Hale, was your uncle involved?”

“Did you know Isabella had help?”

“Is your family connected to a larger conspiracy?”

Marcus ignored every voice.

He only looked for one person.

Khloe.

She stood near the courthouse steps, supported by her attorney.

She looked tired.

But she was waiting for him.

Marcus walked toward her.

The moment he reached her, she grabbed his hand.

“You’re shaking.”

He looked down.

He had not noticed.

“I don’t understand.”

Khloe looked at him.

“What?”

“How could I not see it?”

She knew exactly what he meant.

Alexander.

Ethan.

Isabella.

Everyone had hidden something.

“You trusted them.”

Marcus shook his head.

“I defended them.”

His voice became heavier.

“I defended Alexander when people questioned him.”

“I defended Ethan when you told me something felt wrong.”

“I thought Isabella was the only person trying to destroy us.”

Khloe touched his face.

“Marcus.”

He looked at her.

“I brought them into our lives.”

“No.”

Her voice was firm.

“You loved people.”

A pause.

“That was never your crime.”

But Marcus could not accept that yet.

Because there was another question.

One that terrified him.

What else had he missed?

The Hidden Account

The next morning, Detective Grant arrived with new information.

She did not sit down.

She placed a file on the table.

“We found the financial connection.”

Marcus immediately looked up.

“Between Isabella and Alexander?”

Detective Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

She opened the file.

Bank records.

Transfers.

Private payments.

“Six years ago, shortly after Isabella ended the pregnancy, money started moving.”

Marcus studied the documents.

“From who?”

Detective Grant pointed.

“An account connected to Alexander Hale Medical Foundation.”

Marcus froze.

“The foundation?”

“Yes.”

The foundation had been created by Alexander years earlier.

A charity supporting maternal healthcare.

A symbol of his reputation.

Marcus whispered:

“He used the foundation?”

Detective Grant nodded.

“That appears to be the case.”

The numbers were not enormous.

That was what made it worse.

Small transfers.

Carefully hidden.

Designed not to attract attention.

“He didn’t pay her to attack Khloe.”

Detective Grant explained.

“He paid for access.”

Marcus looked confused.

“Access to what?”

“Information.”

She turned another page.

“Your medical history.”

“Your family records.”

“Hospital information.”

Marcus felt sick.

Everything connected.

Ethan’s Confession

Later that afternoon, Ethan requested a meeting.

Marcus almost refused.

Almost.

But he agreed.

They met in a small room at the courthouse.

Ethan looked different.

Not like the confident cousin Marcus knew.

He looked broken.

“I know you hate me.”

Marcus said nothing.

Ethan continued.

“You should.”

Silence.

“Why?”

Marcus finally asked.

Ethan looked down.

“Because I believed her.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“You helped a woman attack my wife because you believed her?”

“No.”

Ethan shook his head.

“I helped because I thought I was fixing something.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Fixing what?”

Ethan looked at him.

“The past.”

Marcus stared.

Ethan explained.

Years ago, Alexander had approached him.

Not Isabella.

Alexander.

“He told me you destroyed Isabella.”

Marcus froze.

“He said you abandoned her when she needed you.”

“That’s a lie.”

“Yes.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I know that now.”

Marcus leaned forward.

“What did Alexander want?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then whispered:

“To punish you.”

The words landed heavily.

“Why?”

Ethan looked away.

“Because he blamed you for his daughter’s death.”

Marcus became still.

“What daughter?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Your uncle had a daughter.”

Marcus searched his memory.

There was nothing.

“He never told anyone.”

Ethan continued.

“She died years ago during childbirth complications.”

Marcus felt confused.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Ethan looked at him.

“Alexander believed your family ignored her.”

A pause.

“He believed you had everything.”

“Love.”

“A family.”

“A future.”

“And he lost his.”

Marcus whispered:

“He blamed me?”

Ethan nodded.

“Alexander convinced himself destroying your happiness would balance the scales.”

Marcus sat silently.

The attack.

The lies.

The manipulation.

All because one man decided Marcus deserved punishment.

The Final Threat

That night, Marcus returned to the hospital.

Khloe was asleep.

He sat beside her.

Watching her breathe.

Watching their daughter move beneath her hand.

For the first time in weeks…

He felt something close to peace.

Then his phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Again.

Marcus answered.

No one spoke.

Then a recording played.

Alexander’s voice.

“You’re looking in the wrong direction.”

Marcus froze.

The recording continued.

“You think Isabella was the enemy.”

A pause.

“She was only the beginning.”

Marcus stood.

“What do you want?”

A different voice answered.

Not Alexander.

Someone else.

A woman.

“You still don’t know who your daughter really is.”

Marcus’s blood ran cold.

“What?”

The voice continued.

“The baby isn’t just connected to Isabella’s past.”

A pause.

“She is connected to yours.”

The call ended.

Marcus stood motionless.

Then he looked at Khloe.

At their unborn child.

And for the first time…

His greatest fear was not losing his family.

May you like

It was discovering that the people trying to destroy him knew something about his family that even he didn’t know.
