Chapter 13 — The Final Confrontation

Chapter 13 — The Final Confrontation

The truth had always been there.

Not hidden in one place.

Not locked behind one door.

It was scattered across years of lies.

A missing document.

A forgotten conversation.

A person who stayed silent.

A person who manipulated everyone.

And now Marcus was finally standing at the center of it.

But the closer he came to the truth…

The more he realized something terrifying.

The person who started everything had never wanted Isabella to win.

He wanted everyone else to lose.

The Last Piece

The morning after the mysterious phone call, Marcus refused to leave Khloe’s side.

Not because he believed the hospital was safe.

Because he no longer believed anywhere was safe.

Khloe noticed immediately.

“You’re doing it again.”

Marcus looked up.

“Doing what?”

“Trying to carry everything alone.”

He looked away.

“I don’t know who to trust anymore.”

Khloe reached for his hand.

“Then trust one thing.”

“What?”

She placed his hand over hers.

“Trust that we survived everything they tried to do.”

For the first time in days…

Marcus smiled.

A small one.

But real.

Then Detective Grant arrived.

And the smile disappeared.

“We found Alexander.”

Marcus stood.

“Where?”

“He left the city.”

Marcus’s expression changed.

“Ran?”

Detective Grant nodded.

“But he left something behind.”

She placed a small box on the table.

Inside was a journal.

Old.

Worn.

Handwritten.

“Where did you get this?”

“From his office.”

Marcus opened it.

The first page contained a date.

Six years earlier.

And the first sentence made his hands shake.

“Marcus must experience the pain I experienced.”

Alexander’s Journal

They spent hours reading.

And every page revealed another piece of the plan.

Alexander had not suddenly become cruel.

He had been building his anger for years.

He blamed Marcus for everything.

The failed relationship with Isabella.

The family Marcus created.

The happiness Marcus found.

But there was something else.

Something Marcus never expected.

Alexander had believed Marcus’s father was responsible for ruining his daughter’s medical care.

A decision made years earlier.

A mistake.

A mistake Alexander believed was covered up by money.

Marcus turned the page.

There it was.

The reason.

“The Hale family destroyed mine. I will destroy theirs.”

Khloe read over his shoulder.

Her face became pale.

“He wanted revenge.”

Marcus nodded.

“But why Isabella?”

Detective Grant answered.

“Because she was easy to manipulate.”

The Meeting

Alexander was found at an abandoned medical research facility outside the city.

The same place where he had stored old records.

Marcus insisted on being there.

Detective Grant disagreed.

“This is dangerous.”

Marcus looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“I need to see him.”

After everything…

He needed the truth from the person who started it.

The building was empty.

Cold.

Broken.

Marcus walked through the hallway.

Then he heard a voice.

“I knew you would come.”

Alexander stepped out.

Older.

Tired.

No longer the respected doctor.

Only a man carrying years of hatred.

Marcus stared at him.

“Why?”

Alexander smiled sadly.

“That’s all you have?”

“Why?”

A long silence.

“Because you had everything.”

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s your reason?”

Alexander stepped closer.

“You had love.”

“You had a family.”

“You had a future.”

His voice broke.

“And I lost mine.”

Marcus looked at him.

“You didn’t lose your daughter because of me.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.”

“You took your pain and decided everyone else needed to suffer.”

For the first time…

Alexander looked uncertain.

“You used Isabella.”

Marcus continued.

“You destroyed Ethan.”

“You attacked Khloe.”

Alexander’s expression changed.

“I never told Isabella to hurt her.”

Marcus stared.

“That’s the only part you regret?”

Silence.

Because Alexander had no answer.

Isabella Arrives

Then another voice echoed.

“Stop.”

Marcus turned.

Isabella stood at the entrance.

Everyone froze.

Detective Grant’s officers moved immediately.

But Isabella raised her hands.

“I’m not here to run.”

Marcus looked at her.

“Why are you here?”

She looked at Alexander.

Not with anger.

With betrayal.

“You lied to me.”

Alexander looked away.

“I told you the truth.”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“You told me what I wanted to hear.”

Marcus watched silently.

For the first time…

Isabella was not looking at him.

She was looking at the person who controlled her.

“You said Marcus took everything from me.”

She continued.

“You said if I proved the truth, he would understand.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But you never told me you wanted him destroyed.”

Alexander remained silent.

And that silence answered everything.

The Final Evidence

Detective Grant stepped forward.

“Alexander Hale, you are under arrest.”

Alexander did not resist.

But before officers took him away…

He looked at Marcus.

“You think this ends with me?”

Marcus stared.

Alexander smiled faintly.

“You still don’t know the entire truth.”

Marcus felt a familiar coldness.

Not again.

“What truth?”

Alexander looked toward Isabella.

“She knows.”

Everyone turned.

Isabella went pale.

Marcus looked at her.

“What does he mean?”

She said nothing.

“Isabella.”

Her lips trembled.

“I didn’t want to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

She looked at Khloe’s photograph on Marcus’s phone.

Then whispered:

“The baby.”

Marcus froze.

“What about my daughter?”

Isabella closed her eyes.

“I know why Alexander was so interested in her.”

A pause.

“Because she isn’t just connected to you.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Isabella looked at him.

And finally admitted:

“The hospital records were altered before I ever requested them.”

Silence.

“Someone changed the information.”

“Someone wanted us to believe there was a connection.”

Marcus’s face changed.

“Who?”

Isabella whispered:

“I don’t know.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Because Alexander had been caught.

Isabella had confessed.

But another question remained.

Who had created the lie that started everything?

And why?

Marcus looked at Detective Grant.

She already understood.

This was not over.

Not yet.
