Chapter 9 — Isabella’s Darkest Secret

Chapter 9 — Isabella’s Darkest Secret

The truth did not arrive like a confession.

It arrived like a wound reopening.

Piece by piece.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Marcus sat alone in the hospital parking garage.

He had been there for almost an hour.

The engine was off.

The lights were off.

But he could not make himself leave.

Dr. Alexander Hale.

His uncle.

The man who delivered babies for decades.

The man who saved thousands of mothers.

The man who held Khloe’s hand when she was fighting for her life.

And now…

His name was connected to Isabella.

To the missing recording.

To the DNA request.

Marcus wanted to believe there was another explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A mistake.

Anything.

But he had learned something during the last few weeks.

The people who hurt you were rarely strangers.

They were the people you trusted enough to lower your guard around.

His phone rang.

Detective Grant.

Marcus answered immediately.

“Tell me you found something.”

There was silence.

Then:

“We did.”

Marcus sat up.

“What?”

“Not about Alexander.”

A pause.

“About Isabella.”

Thirty minutes later, Marcus entered the investigation room.

Detective Grant had several files spread across the table.

Old documents.

Medical reports.

Photographs.

“She wasn’t telling the whole truth.”

Marcus looked at the files.

“What part?”

Detective Grant opened the first folder.

“Her pregnancy.”

Marcus became still.

“We confirmed Isabella was pregnant six years ago.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“But we found something you didn’t know.”

She placed another document in front of him.

Pregnancy termination report.

Marcus stared.

“What is this?”

Detective Grant watched him carefully.

“She did not lose the baby naturally.”

The room became silent.

“What are you saying?”

“She ended the pregnancy.”

Marcus felt like the air disappeared.

“No.”

Detective Grant nodded.

“Yes.”

“Isabella told everyone she lost the child.”

Marcus looked at the document again.

His hands tightened.

“Why?”

“That’s what we’re trying to understand.”

The next file was worse.

A psychiatric evaluation.

Detective Grant opened it.

“After the procedure, Isabella received counseling.”

Marcus looked down.

The report described:

  • obsessive attachment

  • abandonment issues

  • emotional instability

  • fixation on rebuilding a lost relationship

Marcus closed his eyes.

“She knew.”

Detective Grant looked at him.

“What?”

“She knew the baby wasn’t coming back.”

His voice became bitter.

“She created a version where someone stole it from her.”

But Detective Grant shook her head.

“There is more.”

She opened another file.

A photograph.

A woman.

A nurse.

“Who is this?”

“Rachel Moore.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why is she important?”

“She worked at the clinic where Isabella received treatment.”

“And?”

“She disappeared three years ago.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

Detective Grant nodded.

“She was the last person who spoke to Isabella about the pregnancy.”

Meanwhile, across town…

Isabella sat in front of a mirror.

She removed her makeup slowly.

Not like someone preparing for bed.

Like someone removing a mask.

Her phone rang.

She answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“You need to stop.”

Isabella smiled.

“You sound worried.”

“This has gone too far.”

She looked at her reflection.

“No.”

“It started six years ago.”

The man became quiet.

“You promised me nobody would get hurt.”

Isabella’s smile disappeared.

“I promised you I would fix what was taken from me.”

“You attacked her.”

“She took my place.”

The man sighed.

“You need help.”

Isabella looked at the photo beside her mirror.

Marcus.

Khloe.

Their baby.

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“I need my family back.”

The next morning, Marcus received a message.

A name.

A location.

Rachel Moore.

The nurse who disappeared.

The message contained one sentence:

She is alive.

Marcus immediately showed Detective Grant.

She stared at the message.

“Who sent this?”

“I don’t know.”

Detective Grant thought for a moment.

“Then we find Rachel before whoever sent this changes their mind.”

They found her two days later.

Not far from the city.

Living under another name.

Working at a small bookstore.

When Detective Grant showed her Isabella’s picture…

Rachel went pale.

“No.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“You know her.”

Rachel looked at him.

Then at the detective.

“I thought she would never find me.”

The interview lasted three hours.

And by the end…

Marcus understood.

Isabella’s secret was not just about a lost pregnancy.

It was about a lie she had protected for six years.

Rachel told them everything.

Six years earlier, Isabella had arrived at the clinic devastated.

She had already lost Marcus.

Or believed she had.

She wanted something to hold onto.

“She asked me one question,” Rachel said.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What question?”

Rachel looked at him.

“She asked if there was any way to make someone believe a child belonged to them.”

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“She planned this?”

Rachel nodded.

“Not at first.”

“She was grieving.”

“But then…”

Rachel looked down.

“Then she became obsessed.”

“What did she do?”

Rachel hesitated.

“She kept your information.”

“Photos.”

“Medical records.”

“Everything.”

Marcus whispered:

“She was building a future that never existed.”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

But then Rachel revealed the final secret.

The one that changed everything.

“She didn’t act alone.”

Marcus looked up.

“Who helped her?”

Rachel’s eyes filled with fear.

“The person who convinced her she still had a chance.”

“Who?”

Rachel whispered:

“Dr. Alexander Hale.”

The room went silent.

Marcus felt like he had been hit.

Again.

“No.”

Rachel nodded.

“He was the one who told her she could prove the baby connection.”

“He was the one who gave her access.”

“He was the one who told her your family could be destroyed.”

Marcus stood.

His uncle.

The respected doctor.

The man everyone trusted.

Detective Grant looked at him.

“Marcus…”

But he was already thinking about something else.

If Alexander helped Isabella…

If Alexander knew about the DNA test…

If Alexander was behind the missing evidence…

Then why?

What did he want?

That night, Marcus returned to the hospital.

He entered Khloe’s room.

She immediately saw his face.

“What happened?”

Marcus sat beside her.

For several seconds, he could not speak.

Then he said:

“We were looking for Isabella’s secret.”

Khloe waited.

“We found it.”

A pause.

“But we also found something worse.”

“What?”

Marcus looked at her.

“The person helping her…”

His voice broke.

“Was my uncle.”

Khloe covered her mouth.

“No…”

Marcus took her hand.

“I don’t know why yet.”

Outside the window, the city lights continued shining.

Unaware that a respected family name was about to collapse.

Because the darkest secret was not Isabella’s obsession.

May you like

It was the reason someone powerful wanted that obsession to continue.
