Chapter 6 — The Missing Recording

Chapter 6 — The Missing Recording
The first sign that something was wrong was not the missing video.
It was the silence.
Daniel Cruz had worked in hospital security for seventeen years.
He had seen mistakes.
He had seen accidents.
He had seen people panic and make terrible decisions.
But he had also seen something else.
People who knew they were guilty.
And those people always tried to erase the same thing.
Evidence.
At 6:42 in the morning, Daniel sat alone in the hospital security office.
The room was filled with monitors.
Hundreds of camera feeds.
Every hallway.
Every entrance.
Every restricted area.
The hospital was designed like a fortress.
Especially the maternity wing.
Privacy was important.
Safety was more important.
Daniel replayed the footage from the day Isabella attacked Khloe.
Again.
And again.
Something bothered him.
Something he could not explain.
He paused the video.
The hallway camera showed Isabella entering the maternity suite.
Then Khloe.
Then the attack.
Perfect.
Too perfect.
Daniel leaned closer.
“Come on…”
He switched to another camera.
The camera outside the private elevator.
Nothing.
He checked the hallway camera near the emergency exit.
Nothing.
The camera near the parking entrance.
Nothing.
His eyebrows tightened.
Because the hospital had four cameras covering that area.
Not one.
Four.
Daniel opened the system records.
And froze.
Three hours before the attack…
Someone had manually accessed the security system.
A command had been entered.
Camera Maintenance Mode Activated.
Daniel sat back.
“No.”
He checked the user ID.
The screen loaded.
User: Administrator Override
His expression changed.
Someone had used a master access code.
An hour later, Marcus arrived.
He had barely slept.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Khloe on the floor.
Every time he woke up, he wondered if he had missed something.
Daniel met him outside the security office.
“You said you found something.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
Marcus followed him inside.
The security director played the footage.
Then showed the system logs.
“Someone disabled cameras before Isabella arrived.”
Marcus stared.
“What?”
“This wasn’t just Isabella walking in and losing control.”
Daniel pointed at the screen.
“Someone prepared the environment.”
Marcus felt anger rising.
“So she had help.”
Daniel did not answer immediately.
Because the possibility was worse than saying yes.
“She may have.”
Detective Grant arrived twenty minutes later.
She studied the information carefully.
“Who has access to the administrator account?”
Daniel opened the list.
“Very few people.”
“How many?”
“Five.”
Detective Grant looked up.
“Names.”
Daniel printed the list.
The room became silent.
Daniel Cruz.
Hospital Director Thomas Bell.
IT Administrator Kevin Walsh.
Chief Medical Officer Alexander Hale.
Emergency System Administrator.
Marcus looked at the names.
Then at Daniel.
“You?”
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“I know how this looks.”
Marcus remained silent.
“But I didn’t do this.”
Detective Grant watched him carefully.
“Can you prove it?”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because my access logs show I was in another building.”
He pointed to the records.
“Checking emergency equipment.”
Detective Grant looked at the remaining names.
Alexander Hale.
Marcus’s uncle.
The man who saved Khloe’s life.
Marcus noticed.
And his face changed.
“No.”
Detective Grant looked at him.
“We are not accusing anyone.”
“But?”
“But we investigate everyone.”
Marcus looked away.
Because for the first time…
The possibility entered his mind.
Someone close to him might be involved.
Later that afternoon, Alexander found Marcus outside Khloe’s room.
“You look like you haven’t slept.”
Marcus looked at him.
“Uncle Alex.”
“Yes?”
“Did you access hospital security systems?”
The question landed like a punch.
Alexander stared.
“What?”
“Someone disabled cameras.”
Silence.
Alexander looked hurt.
“You think I did that?”
Marcus immediately regretted the question.
“No.”
But the damage was done.
Alexander sighed.
“I understand why you asked.”
He looked toward Khloe’s room.
“I would never harm her.”
Marcus believed him.
He wanted to.
But something about this case was changing everything.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had something they had not said.
That evening, Daniel discovered something else.
A hidden backup file.
Buried deep inside the system.
A recording that had not been deleted.
Only hidden.
He opened it.
The screen showed another angle.
Not the hallway.
Not the elevator.
A small camera near the service corridor.
The video began.
A person entered.
Wearing hospital staff clothing.
Face covered.
The person stopped beside the security panel.
Entered a code.
Disabled the cameras.
Daniel leaned forward.
Because the person removed their gloves for a moment.
Just long enough.
A hand.
A ring.
A familiar symbol.
Daniel froze.
“No way.”
The person turned slightly.
The face remained hidden.
But the ring was clear.
A black stone ring.
A ring Daniel had seen before.
On Isabella Moretti’s hand.
Daniel immediately called Marcus.
But before he could speak…
The screen went black.
The file disappeared.
Someone had remotely accessed his computer.
Daniel grabbed his phone.
“Marcus.”
His voice was urgent.
“We have a bigger problem.”
Marcus answered immediately.
“What happened?”
Daniel stared at the empty screen.
“The backup recording was deleted.”
A pause.
“Deleted by who?”
Daniel looked around the empty security office.
Then whispered:
“Someone who knows exactly how this hospital works.”
That night, Marcus returned to Khloe’s room.
She noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
He sat beside her.
For a moment, he wanted to lie.
To protect her.
But he promised himself.
No more secrets.
“Someone helped Isabella.”
Khloe became still.
“What?”
“The cameras were disabled before the attack.”
Khloe looked toward the window.
Her voice became quiet.
“Marcus…”
“What?”
She hesitated.
“Before Isabella pushed me…”
He leaned closer.
“What did she say?”
Khloe swallowed.
“She said…”
Her fingers tightened around his.
“She said she had already spoken to someone inside our family.”
Marcus felt a chill.
“Who?”
Khloe looked at him.
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I don’t know.”
A pause.
“But she said…”
“She wasn’t coming alone.”
The room went silent.
Because suddenly the missing recording was no longer just evidence.
It was a warning.
Someone inside their circle wanted the truth buried.
May you like
And they were willing to do anything to make sure it stayed hidden.
