Chapter 10 — The Trial Begins

Chapter 10 — The Trial Begins
The courtroom was full before the doors officially opened.
Reporters stood outside the courthouse before sunrise.
Cameras pointed toward every person entering the building.
Strangers held opinions about people they had never met.
Some called Isabella a victim.
Some called her a criminal.
Some simply wanted to watch a powerful family collapse.
Marcus had never understood how quickly a person’s private nightmare could become public entertainment.
His wife had almost lost their child.
A woman had attacked her.
A trusted family member had helped hide the truth.
And now all of it would be discussed by people who had never seen Khloe lying on that hospital floor.
The doors opened.
And the trial began.
The Prosecutor’s Opening Statement
The courtroom became silent when the prosecutor, Elena Brooks, stood.
She did not raise her voice.
She did not need to.
“This case is not about jealousy.”
She looked at the jury.
“It is not about a complicated relationship from the past.”
She paused.
“This case is about a deliberate attack.”
Isabella sat beside her attorney.
Calm.
Controlled.
Almost peaceful.
Marcus watched her carefully.
That frightened him more than anger would have.
“She planned her actions,” Elena continued.
“She gathered information.”
“She obtained private medical details.”
“She manipulated people around her.”
“And when she confronted Mrs. Hale, she attempted to create a story where she was the victim.”
The prosecutor turned toward the jury.
“The evidence will show that Isabella Moretti did not lose control.”
“She had control from the beginning.”
Then Isabella’s attorney stood.
Victor Lang.
The man who had built careers defending people accused of terrible things.
“Ladies and gentlemen…”
His voice was gentle.
Almost comforting.
“My client is not perfect.”
Marcus almost laughed.
Because that was the first move.
Admit something small.
So people become willing to question the bigger truth.
“She made mistakes.”
Victor continued.
“She was emotional.”
“She was desperate.”
“But desperate is not the same as guilty.”
He pointed toward Marcus.
“Mr. Hale had a complicated history with my client.”
Marcus felt Khloe’s hand tighten around his.
“This case involves grief, misunderstanding, and a woman who believed she was fighting for answers.”
Victor looked at the jury.
“Before you decide who the villain is…”
“Ask yourself who benefits from making Isabella Moretti look like a monster.”
The courtroom murmured.
Marcus felt anger rise.
But Khloe remained still.
She whispered:
“Don’t react.”
He looked at her.
“How can I not?”
She looked forward.
“Because that’s what they want.”
The First Witness
The prosecutor called Daniel Cruz.
The hospital security director.
Daniel walked to the stand.
Swore to tell the truth.
Sat down.
Elena approached.
“Mr. Cruz, were you working at the hospital on the day of the incident?”
“Yes.”
“Were you responsible for reviewing security footage?”
“Yes.”
She displayed the hallway footage.
The courtroom watched.
The moment Isabella entered.
The confrontation.
Khloe falling.
Several people looked away.
Even after seeing it on video…
It was difficult.
“Did this footage show the entire event?”
Daniel hesitated.
“No.”
The courtroom reacted.
Marcus looked at him.
No.
Elena turned.
“Why not?”
“Because someone disabled several cameras before the incident.”
The judge leaned forward.
“Are you saying the security system was manipulated?”
“Yes.”
Victor stood.
“Objection. Speculation.”
“Sustained.”
But the damage was done.
The jury had heard it.
Someone had prepared.
The Missing Recording
Elena continued.
“Mr. Cruz, did you discover a hidden backup recording?”
“Yes.”
“And what happened to that recording?”
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“It was deleted.”
A wave of whispers moved through the courtroom.
“By whom?”
Elena asked.
Daniel looked toward the defense table.
Then answered:
“Someone who accessed the system remotely.”
Victor stood.
“And do you know who?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.”
The courtroom became silent.
“Who?”
Daniel answered:
“An account belonging to Kevin Walsh.”
Victor smiled slightly.
“Thank you.”
Marcus immediately understood.
Victor wanted the jury focused on Kevin.
Not Isabella.
The Unexpected Witness
After Daniel stepped down, everyone expected another hospital employee.
Instead…
The courtroom doors opened.
And a woman entered.
Rachel Moore.
Marcus stared.
She was the woman who had disappeared.
The woman who knew Isabella’s secret.
Victor immediately stood.
“Your Honor, we were not informed of this witness.”
Elena looked calm.
“She was located recently.”
The judge allowed her testimony.
Rachel sat down.
Elena began.
“Ms. Moore, did you know Isabella Moretti six years ago?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“At a medical clinic.”
“Why was she there?”
Rachel looked at Isabella.
Then answered:
“She was pregnant.”
The courtroom went silent.
Marcus looked at Isabella.
Her expression had changed.
Only slightly.
But he saw it.
Fear.
“What happened to the pregnancy?”
Elena asked.
Rachel took a breath.
“She ended the pregnancy.”
Shock spread through the courtroom.
Victor jumped up.
“Objection!”
The judge looked at him.
“On what grounds?”
Victor hesitated.
“Medical privacy.”
Elena responded:
“The defendant used this pregnancy as the foundation of her motive and legal claims.”
The judge allowed the testimony.
Rachel continued.
“She told people she lost the baby.”
Marcus looked down.
A painful realization.
“She created a story where someone took something from her.”
Rachel said.
“But she was the one who made the choice.”
Then Elena asked the question everyone was waiting for.
“Did Isabella act alone?”
Rachel froze.
The courtroom waited.
Finally, she answered.
“No.”
Marcus felt his heartbeat change.
“She received help.”
“From whom?”
Rachel looked toward Marcus.
Then toward the gallery.
“Dr. Alexander Hale.”
The courtroom exploded.
People whispered.
Reporters immediately began typing.
Marcus closed his eyes.
The truth he had feared was now public.
But then Alexander stood.
He was not supposed to testify.
Not today.
Yet he walked toward the courtroom entrance.
Everyone watched.
His face was calm.
Too calm.
The judge demanded order.
Alexander looked at Marcus.
And said only one sentence:
“You still don’t understand what happened six years ago.”
Marcus stared.
“What does that mean?”
Alexander’s expression changed.
For the first time…
Marcus saw something beneath the calm.
Regret.
Then Alexander said:
“Because Isabella was never the person you should have been afraid of.”
Silence.
The courtroom doors closed.
And everyone realized the trial had just changed.
Because the question was no longer only:
Why did Isabella attack Khloe?
It became:
May you like
Who was controlling Isabella all along?
