CHAPTER 1 — THE HOSPITAL SUITE LIE

CHAPTER 1 — THE HOSPITAL SUITE LIE

The first thing Khloe Thorne felt was not pain.

It was fear.

Not the ordinary kind.

Not the fear of embarrassment.

Not the fear of losing an argument.

The kind of fear that changes a person forever.

The kind that comes when a mother realizes something is threatening the life growing inside her.

Her hands wrapped around her stomach instinctively.

Protect.

That was the only thought left in her mind.

Protect the baby.

The marble floor beneath her was freezing.

The sharp edges of shattered crystal pressed against her palm.

The smell of expensive champagne mixed with something metallic in the air.

Blood.

For a few seconds, Khloe couldn't understand what had happened.

One moment, she had been standing in the private hospital suite.

The next...

she was on the ground.

And Isabella Rossi was standing above her.

Perfect.

Untouched.

Beautiful.

Like nothing had happened.

The crimson gown Isabella wore looked almost unreal beneath the golden chandelier.

A color chosen carefully.

A color meant to be remembered.

"You should have listened."

Isabella's voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

That frightened Khloe more than the attack.

A person who lost control could regret what they did.

A person who planned it...

never did.

Khloe struggled to breathe.

"Isabella..."

Her voice barely worked.

"Why?"

For a moment, Isabella looked almost offended.

"Why?"

She repeated.

Then she laughed softly.

"After everything?"

She stepped closer.

"You really don't understand, do you?"

Khloe stared at her.

Isabella crouched slightly.

Her expression changed from anger to satisfaction.

"You walked into my life and took everything."

"I didn't take anything."

Khloe whispered.

Isabella's smile disappeared.

"You took Marcus."

The words were full of hatred.

Khloe closed her eyes.

There it was.

The truth behind every fake smile.

Every polite conversation.

Every public appearance.

This was never about business.

Never about friendship.

Never about jealousy between women.

It was obsession.

"You knew he loved me."

Khloe said.

Isabella's eyes hardened.

"He loved an idea."

She leaned closer.

"The perfect wife."

"The perfect family."

"The perfect child."

Her gaze dropped toward Khloe's stomach.

"Something I could have given him."

Khloe's hand tightened protectively.

"You don't know what love is."

The sentence hit Isabella harder than any insult.

Her face changed.

The mask disappeared.

"Don't talk to me about love."

Her voice became colder.

"You married him because you were lucky."

A pause.

"I earned him."

Khloe stared.

"Earning someone's attention isn't the same as being loved."

For one second...

Isabella looked like she might cry.

Then the anger returned.

"You always think you're better."

"No."

Khloe whispered.

"I just know I'm not you."

The silence afterward was dangerous.

Isabella stood slowly.

Her eyes moved toward the door.

Then back to Khloe.

She realized something.

Someone might come.

Someone might see.

And Isabella Rossi had spent years building a perfect image.

She couldn't allow the world to see the truth.

So she changed.

Instantly.

The cruel expression vanished.

The anger disappeared.

A frightened woman replaced it.

A victim.

It happened so smoothly that Khloe almost questioned reality.

Almost.

Isabella stepped backward.

Then screamed.

"Help!"

Khloe froze.

"What are you doing?"

Isabella ignored her.

Another scream.

"Someone help me!"

The suite door opened.

Marcus Thorne appeared.

And everything stopped.

Marcus had spent the entire evening hearing congratulations.

Congratulations on the baby.

Congratulations on the foundation expansion.

Congratulations on the future of the Thorne family.

Everyone wanted something from him.

Money.

Influence.

Access.

But none of it mattered.

Because upstairs...

his wife was supposed to be resting.

When Elaine Parker, the gala coordinator, told him there was an argument near the private suite...

he didn't hesitate.

Then he opened the door.

And saw his wife on the floor.

His entire world changed.

"Khloe."

Her name came out broken.

He rushed forward.

But before he reached her...

Isabella spoke.

"Marcus..."

Her voice trembled.

"She attacked me."

He stopped.

Slowly.

His eyes moved.

From Isabella.

To Khloe.

To the broken glass.

To the overturned table.

Then back.

"She attacked you?"

Isabella nodded.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I tried to calm her down."

Khloe stared at her.

She couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Marcus..."

Her voice cracked.

"She's lying."

Isabella immediately looked hurt.

"I know you're angry."

The sentence was calculated.

Marcus noticed.

Because he knew Isabella.

Everyone thought he didn't.

But he did.

He knew how she spoke.

How she manipulated conversations.

How she controlled rooms.

But seeing his pregnant wife on the floor...

made everything complicated.

"Call the doctor."

Marcus ordered.

Elaine immediately reached for her phone.

Khloe tried to sit up.

Pain exploded through her body.

She gasped.

Marcus was beside her instantly.

"Don't move."

His voice softened.

"Don't move, sweetheart."

For a moment, Khloe saw the man she married.

Not the billionaire.

Not the businessman.

Her husband.

But then Isabella spoke again.

"Marcus..."

She lowered her voice.

"I don't know why she did this."

Khloe looked at her.

The accusation was almost worse than the attack.

Because Isabella wasn't just trying to hurt her.

She was trying to rewrite reality.

Minutes later, doctors rushed into the suite.

Khloe was placed on a stretcher.

Marcus walked beside her.

Never leaving her hand.

But before the doors closed...

he looked back.

At Isabella.

For the first time that night...

he saw something.

Not sadness.

Not fear.

Calculation.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

The hospital corridor became chaos.

Nurses.

Doctors.

Security.

Everyone moved quickly.

Khloe held onto Marcus's hand.

"Marcus..."

"I'm here."

"Please."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Believe me."

The words hurt him.

Because she shouldn't have had to ask.

He squeezed her hand.

"I do."

But he didn't sound completely certain.

And Khloe heard it.

That small hesitation.

That tiny moment where doubt entered.

It hurt more than the pain.

Two hours later.

The doctor finally came out.

Marcus stood immediately.

"How is she?"

The doctor removed his mask.

"Your wife and the baby are stable."

Marcus exhaled.

"But..."

The word changed everything.

"But what?"

"The impact was severe."

Marcus's face hardened.

"Was it intentional?"

The doctor paused.

Then answered carefully.

"The injuries are consistent with significant force."

A cold silence followed.

Someone had tried to hurt his wife.

Someone had tried to hurt his child.

Later that night, Marcus returned to the private security office.

He needed answers.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

Proof.

The hospital security chief entered carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Thorne."

Marcus looked up.

"What happened?"

The security chief hesitated.

"There's something you need to see."

He placed the tablet down.

A video file.

Marcus frowned.

"From where?"

"The hospital security system."

Marcus looked at him.

"Play it."

The screen turned on.

The camera angle showed the hallway outside the luxury suite.

Marcus watched.

Isabella entering.

Alone.

Then another camera angle appeared.

Inside the suite.

The ceiling camera.

Marcus froze.

Because the hospital's newest security upgrade had been installed that week.

And nobody knew about it.

Not Isabella.

Not the guests.

Not even Khloe.

The footage played.

The entire truth appeared.

The shove.

The second shove.

The kick.

Every movement.

Every second.

No misunderstanding.

No argument.

No self-defense.

Just an attack.

Marcus stared at the screen.

His hands slowly closed into fists.

The woman who claimed to be afraid...

had been the danger.

The woman who accused his wife...

was the one who almost destroyed his family.

The security chief lowered his voice.

"Mr. Thorne..."

Marcus didn't answer.

He kept watching.

Because one thought repeated in his mind.

She tried to kill my child.

Then he looked toward the hospital room where Khloe was resting.

And something inside him changed.

The billionaire everyone feared disappeared.

The husband and father remained.

"Lock every exit."

Marcus said.

The security chief nodded.

"Should we contact the police?"

Marcus looked at the frozen image of Isabella.

"Not yet."

A dangerous calm entered his voice.

"First..."

He picked up the tablet.

"I want to know who helped her."

Because Marcus Thorne understood one thing.

People like Isabella Rossi did not make moves like this alone.

Someone had convinced her she could win.

Someone had promised her protection.

And whoever that person was...

May you like

had just declared war on the Thorne family.
