CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

People often misunderstood ambition.

They believed ambition was about wanting more.

More money.

More success.

More power.

But there was a darker kind of ambition.

The kind that did not want to build something.

It wanted to take.

Isabella Rossi had never wanted a life.

She wanted someone else's.

The photograph sat on Marcus Thorne's desk all night.

He did not sleep.

He stared at it until the details stopped looking like details.

The crowd.

The guests.

The smiling faces.

And Isabella.

Standing behind him and Khloe.

Watching.

Waiting.

Five years before anyone knew her name.

Five years before she appeared at Thorne charity events.

Five years before she became "a family friend."

She was already there.

At 6:00 a.m., Marcus called Daniel.

"Find everything about Isabella Rossi."

Daniel was silent.

"We already investigated her."

"Not enough."

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

"Start from the beginning."

The beginning was not what anyone expected.

Because Isabella Rossi was not born into wealth.

She was not raised among billionaires.

She was not someone who grew up understanding power.

She learned it.

Slowly.

Painfully.

And obsessively.

Isabella was twenty-two when she first entered the world of the wealthy.

She worked as an assistant at a private investment firm.

Nobody noticed her.

That was what she hated most.

She was always in the room.

But never important enough to be remembered.

She poured coffee for people who bought companies.

She organized schedules for people who moved millions.

She stood behind powerful men while they discussed changing the world.

And every day, she watched.

She watched how they spoke.

How they dressed.

How they controlled rooms without raising their voices.

She learned one thing.

Money was not the real power.

Recognition was.

The first time Isabella saw Marcus Thorne was not at a gala.

It was on television.

A young Marcus announcing the expansion of Thorne Industries.

Confident.

Calm.

Untouchable.

The world saw a billionaire.

Isabella saw something else.

A doorway.

A way out.

"That's him."

Her friend asked:

"Who?"

Isabella pointed at the screen.

"Someone who will change my life."

Her friend laughed.

"You don't even know him."

Isabella smiled.

"Not yet."

Years later, when she finally entered Marcus's world...

she didn't arrive like a stranger.

She arrived prepared.

She studied him.

His habits.

His interests.

His weaknesses.

And most importantly...

His marriage.

Because Khloe Thorne was the only obstacle.

The first time Isabella met Khloe, she understood immediately.

That was the problem.

Khloe was not what Isabella expected.

She expected arrogance.

A woman spoiled by wealth.

Someone easy to hate.

Instead...

Khloe was kind.

And that made Isabella hate her more.

Because kindness was something Isabella could not manipulate.

At a charity event years earlier, Isabella watched Khloe speak with hospital workers.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No audience.

She was simply helping.

Marcus approached her afterward.

His expression changed when he looked at his wife.

Not admiration.

Not attraction.

Something deeper.

Peace.

Isabella noticed.

And that was the moment she understood.

She could never compete with Khloe by being prettier.

Or richer.

Or more impressive.

Because Marcus didn't love Khloe because of what she had.

He loved her because of who she was.

So Isabella decided to destroy the thing she could not replace.

The investigation files arrived at Marcus's office two days later.

Daniel placed a thick folder on the table.

"You were right."

Marcus looked up.

"About what?"

"Isabella wasn't trying to become part of your life."

A pause.

"She was trying to erase Khloe's."

The file contained years of information.

Fake friendships.

Manipulated meetings.

Carefully planned appearances.

Every interaction with the Thorne family had been intentional.

Marcus turned the pages slowly.

Then he stopped.

A document.

A private psychological assessment.

Marcus frowned.

"Where did this come from?"

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"Isabella's former therapist."

Marcus opened it.

The report was years old.

The diagnosis was not important.

The notes were.

Subject displays extreme fixation toward individuals perceived as symbols of success.

Subject does not desire partnership. Subject desires replacement of identity.

Marcus stared.

Replacement.

The word stayed with him.

Because it explained everything.

Meanwhile, Isabella was discovering that Marcus was no longer afraid to fight.

And it terrified her.

She entered her lawyer's office.

The atmosphere was different.

Before, everyone treated her like a future member of the Thorne family.

Now...

they avoided eye contact.

Her lawyer closed the door.

"Isabella."

She sat down.

"Fix this."

The lawyer looked at her.

"I need to be honest."

"No."

Her voice sharpened.

"You need to fix it."

The lawyer sighed.

"The video changes everything."

"I can explain."

"No."

The lawyer shook his head.

"You can't."

For the first time...

someone told Isabella the truth.

And she hated it.

"Do you know what Marcus did?"

the lawyer continued.

"He didn't just release the footage."

"He opened an investigation."

Isabella's expression changed.

"Into me?"

"Into everyone connected to you."

Silence.

That was when Isabella realized.

Marcus wasn't trying to punish her.

He was hunting the entire structure behind her.

"Who helped you?"

the lawyer asked.

Isabella looked away.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

The lawyer stared.

"You need to tell me."

"No."

"Why?"

Because Isabella finally understood something.

The people who helped her were not friends.

They were using her.

And if she exposed them...

she would no longer be useful.

That evening, Marcus visited Khloe.

She was recovering slowly.

But something had changed.

She was quieter.

More distant.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"What are you thinking?"

Khloe looked at the window.

"That everyone keeps fighting over you."

Marcus frowned.

"What?"

"Your father."

"Isabella."

"Your enemies."

A pause.

"And I don't know where I fit anymore."

Marcus sat beside her.

"Khloe."

She looked at him.

"I don't want to be the reason you lose everything."

His expression softened.

"You are not the reason."

"Then what am I?"

Marcus took her hand.

"The reason I finally know what I'm protecting."

Khloe looked down.

"I used to think marrying you meant entering your world."

A small sad smile appeared.

"I didn't realize your world would try to destroy me."

Marcus squeezed her hand.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"Don't apologize."

A pause.

"Just promise me something."

"What?"

"When this ends..."

She looked at him.

"Don't become like them."

Marcus knew exactly who she meant.

His father.

Isabella.

Everyone who believed winning mattered more than being human.

"I promise."

That night, Marcus received another message.

Another photograph.

This time, it wasn't from an unknown number.

It was from Isabella.

A final warning.

The image showed Khloe leaving a hospital years ago.

Before she and Marcus married.

On the back was a handwritten note.

YOU NEVER ASKED HER WHY SHE REALLY NEEDED YOU.

Marcus stared.

His first instinct was anger.

Then confusion.

Because Isabella wasn't accusing Khloe of betrayal.

She was suggesting something else.

Something impossible.

Marcus called Daniel immediately.

"Find out everything about Khloe's life before she met me."

Daniel paused.

"Marcus..."

"Everything."

Because the woman who wanted everything had revealed something dangerous.

She knew a secret.

A secret about Khloe.

A secret that could change the entire foundation of their marriage.

And for the first time since the hospital attack...

Marcus wondered:

Was Isabella lying?

May you like

Or had she just revealed the one truth Khloe had been afraid to tell him?
