CHAPTER 11 — THE PRICE OF A LIE

THE BILLIONAIRE’S WIFE THEY TRIED TO DESTROY

CHAPTER 11 — THE PRICE OF A LIE

A lie was never just a lie.

That was something Marcus Thorne had learned too late.

People always imagined lies disappeared when the truth arrived.

They believed one confession could repair years of damage.

One apology could erase betrayal.

One moment of honesty could fix everything broken.

But Marcus knew better.

A lie had weight.

It sat quietly in the corner of a relationship.

It followed people through every room.

It changed decisions.

Destroyed trust.

Created enemies.

And eventually...

someone had to pay the price.

The Thorne estate had never felt so empty.

For decades, the mansion had been filled with voices.

Business meetings.

Family dinners.

Celebrations.

Arguments.

Now there was only silence.

Richard Thorne had disappeared.

Isabella Rossi was awaiting sentencing.

The board of Thorne Industries was under investigation.

And the empire that had once seemed untouchable was collapsing from within.

But Marcus wasn't thinking about the company.

He was thinking about Khloe.

She sat in the living room, holding the old documents Evelyn Carter had provided.

Her expression was distant.

Marcus knew that look.

It was the look of someone carrying guilt that did not belong entirely to them.

He approached slowly.

"Khloe."

She didn't look up.

"I should have told you."

Marcus sat across from her.

"About your investigation?"

She nodded.

"About everything."

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Marcus asked:

"Do you regret marrying me?"

Her head lifted immediately.

"No."

The answer came without hesitation.

"Never."

"Even after everything?"

Khloe looked around the mansion.

"The lies."

"The secrets."

"Your family trying to destroy me."

A small, painful smile appeared.

"I regret that I didn't tell you sooner."

Marcus looked at her.

"Why didn't you?"

Khloe took a deep breath.

"Because I saw what happened to everyone who challenged your father."

A pause.

"People disappeared."

"Careers ended."

"Families suffered."

She looked at him.

"And I was afraid loving me would make you choose between me and your family."

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Except he hadn't chosen.

His father had forced the choice.

"I was wrong."

Khloe frowned.

"What?"

"I spent years believing protecting my family meant protecting my father's legacy."

He looked toward the window.

"But I was protecting a lie."

Khloe reached for his hand.

"Marcus."

He held hers tightly.

"I should have seen it."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You were his son."

A pause.

"You wanted to believe your father was better than he was."

That was the cruelest part.

The truth was not always hidden because people were stupid.

Sometimes it was hidden because accepting it hurt too much.

The next morning, Marcus returned to Thorne Industries.

The building looked the same.

Glass walls.

Steel elevators.

Thousands of employees.

But everything felt different.

Because he now knew the foundation was damaged.

The board meeting began at nine.

Every executive was present.

Except one.

Marcus noticed immediately.

"Where is Charlotte?"

Nobody answered.

His lawyer placed a folder on the table.

"Mr. Thorne, there is something you need to see."

Marcus opened it.

His expression changed.

Inside were documents.

Legal transfers.

Ownership changes.

A hidden agreement.

"Impossible."

The lawyer looked serious.

"Unfortunately, it isn't."

Marcus read the signature.

His blood turned cold.

Because it belonged to Charlotte.

"She transferred twenty percent of her shares."

"To whom?"

The lawyer hesitated.

"To a private investment group."

Marcus looked up.

"Who controls it?"

Silence.

Then:

"Richard Thorne."

The betrayal hit harder than he expected.

Because Charlotte had stood in the courtroom.

She had admitted the truth.

She had looked afraid.

Marcus believed she was finally choosing honesty.

But maybe...

she was only choosing survival.

He called her immediately.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Then a message arrived.

WE NEED TO TALK. ALONE.

Marcus knew it was dangerous.

But he also knew Charlotte was the last remaining connection to the truth.

They met at an abandoned office building once owned by Thorne Industries.

Charlotte looked exhausted.

Not like a traitor.

Like someone who had been running from something.

"Marcus."

He didn't sit.

"Why?"

She looked down.

"I had no choice."

"Everyone says that."

His voice was cold.

"My father said it."

"Isabella said it."

"And now you say it."

Charlotte's eyes filled with tears.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She took a shaky breath.

"Dad threatened my daughter."

Marcus froze.

"What?"

"He told me if I didn't cooperate, he would expose information that would destroy her future."

Marcus stared.

"What information?"

Charlotte looked away.

"Something he created."

"Created?"

She nodded.

"Dad has spent years making sure everyone around him had something to lose."

Marcus felt sick.

Because that was Richard's true power.

Not money.

Not influence.

Fear.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Charlotte laughed sadly.

"Because I watched what happened to Khloe."

A pause.

"You think I wasn't afraid?"

Marcus had no answer.

Charlotte reached into her bag.

She removed an envelope.

"I kept this."

Marcus took it.

"What is it?"

"The original documents from the company investigation."

His eyes narrowed.

"Why give them to me now?"

Charlotte looked at him.

"Because I realized something."

"What?"

"Dad never planned for you to inherit the company."

Silence.

Marcus stared.

"What are you talking about?"

Charlotte whispered:

"He planned for the company to belong to someone else."

The envelope contained a single name.

A name Marcus had never expected.

His own.

No.

Not Marcus.

Someone else.

Someone who had been hidden for years.

Someone connected to Richard Thorne by blood.

Marcus looked up.

"Who is this?"

Charlotte's face turned pale.

"Your father's first child."

The world seemed to stop.

"That's impossible."

"I wish it was."

Marcus stared at the documents.

Another heir.

Another secret.

Another lie.

Then Charlotte whispered the words that changed everything.

"Your father didn't build an empire."

A pause.

"He built a battlefield."

That night, Marcus returned home.

Khloe immediately saw something was wrong.

"What happened?"

He placed the documents on the table.

"There is another heir."

Her expression changed.

"Another child?"

Marcus nodded.

"But that's not the worst part."

He looked at her.

"The person who tried to destroy us..."

A pause.

"May have been doing it to take back what they believe is theirs."

Khloe touched the documents.

"Who are they?"

Marcus didn't answer.

Because he already knew.

The final page contained a photograph.

A person standing beside Richard Thorne twenty years earlier.

A person everyone thought was dead.

And beneath the photograph was one sentence:

THE TRUE HEIR OF THORNE INDUSTRIES WILL RETURN.

Marcus looked at the picture.

Then at Khloe.

The war with Isabella had ended.

But the real battle had just begun.

Because Isabella Rossi wanted his life.

But the person coming for him...

May you like

wanted his entire legacy.
