CHAPTER 9 — THE COURTROOM WAR

CHAPTER 9 — THE COURTROOM WAR

The courtroom was designed to reveal the truth.

But Marcus Thorne had learned something during his years of building an empire.

Truth did not always arrive first.

Sometimes lies arrived wearing expensive suits.

Sometimes deception walked confidently through the front doors.

Sometimes the person responsible for destroying a family sat at the same table as the people demanding justice.

And on the morning Khloe Thorne entered the courtroom...

everyone was waiting to see if she would break.

The media had surrounded the courthouse before sunrise.

Cameras.

Reporters.

Commentators.

Everyone wanted the same thing.

A story.

They wanted the billionaire's wife.

The attempted murder accusation.

The family scandal.

The collapse of the Thorne empire.

They didn't want justice.

They wanted entertainment.

Khloe stepped out of the car beside Marcus.

She wore a simple black dress.

No jewelry.

No designer labels.

No attempt to impress anyone.

Her hand rested protectively over her stomach.

The child who had almost been taken from her.

The child everyone had almost turned into a weapon.

The crowd immediately reacted.

"Mrs. Thorne!"

"Do you blame Isabella Rossi?"

"Are you afraid your marriage will end?"

"Did you hide information from Mr. Thorne?"

The questions kept coming.

Marcus moved closer.

His security team prepared to intervene.

But Khloe stopped him.

"No."

Marcus looked at her.

She shook her head.

"I can answer."

The reporters became silent.

Khloe looked directly at them.

"I spent years believing the truth would speak for itself."

A pause.

"I was wrong."

The cameras focused.

"Sometimes the truth needs someone willing to stand beside it."

She looked at Marcus.

"And today, I am not standing alone."

They entered the courthouse.

But inside...

the real war began.

Isabella Rossi sat at the opposite table.

She looked completely different.

Gone was the confident woman from the hospital.

Gone was the woman who believed she controlled everything.

But Marcus noticed something.

She wasn't afraid.

Not completely.

She still believed she had a card left to play.

Her lawyer, Vincent Hale, was one of the most aggressive attorneys in the city.

Known for destroying reputations.

Not proving innocence.

Destroying doubt.

Vincent stood.

"Your Honor, this case is being turned into a public spectacle because of the defendant's wealth and influence."

Marcus's attorney immediately objected.

But Vincent continued.

"My client, Isabella Rossi, has already been condemned by public opinion before this court has heard the facts."

Marcus watched him carefully.

Because he recognized the strategy.

Make Isabella the victim.

Again.

The prosecutor presented the first evidence.

The hospital footage.

The courtroom became silent.

The screen displayed the moment Isabella entered Khloe's room.

The moment her expression changed.

The moment the mask disappeared.

Nobody looked away.

Even Isabella.

When the footage ended, the prosecutor spoke.

"That recording shows intent."

A pause.

"It shows planning."

"And it shows an attempt to harm both Mrs. Thorne and her unborn child."

Vincent stood.

"Objection."

The judge looked at him.

"On what grounds?"

"Context."

The courtroom murmured.

"Context?"

the judge asked.

Vincent nodded.

"Yes, Your Honor."

He walked toward the screen.

"Everyone sees a moment."

He pointed toward the footage.

"But nobody sees what happened before."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

Because he knew.

This was the attack.

Not against Khloe.

Against the truth.

Vincent continued.

"My client was emotionally distressed."

"She was frightened."

"She believed she was in danger."

The prosecutor looked stunned.

"Despite the footage?"

Vincent smiled.

"Despite incomplete evidence."

Then he said the words Marcus feared.

"We intend to prove Mrs. Thorne had a motive."

The courtroom changed instantly.

Khloe looked confused.

Marcus turned toward Vincent.

"What?"

Vincent opened a folder.

"Before her marriage to Mr. Thorne, Khloe Bennett investigated Thorne Industries."

Whispers spread.

Marcus remained still.

Because this was the secret.

The secret Khloe had carried.

Vincent looked at the jury.

"She entered Mr. Thorne's life while investigating his family."

A pause.

"She had access to private information."

"She gained influence over Mr. Thorne."

"And eventually became the most powerful woman connected to the Thorne empire."

The implication was obvious.

They were trying to turn Khloe into the villain.

Marcus looked at Khloe.

Her face was pale.

Not because she was guilty.

Because her greatest fear had come true.

The truth she hid to protect Marcus...

was now being used to destroy her.

During recess, Marcus found her alone.

She stood near the courthouse window.

"I knew this would happen."

Marcus stopped.

"What?"

"I knew one day someone would use my past against me."

He walked closer.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Khloe closed her eyes.

"Because I was afraid you would see me differently."

Marcus was silent.

Then:

"I do see you differently."

Her eyes opened.

A painful expression crossed her face.

"Marcus..."

"I see someone who spent years trying to uncover the truth."

A pause.

"Someone who protected me from a truth I wasn't ready to hear."

Khloe looked at him.

"You should be angry."

"I am."

She looked away.

"At me?"

Marcus shook his head.

"At everyone who made you believe you had to carry this alone."

For the first time in days...

Khloe allowed herself to cry.

Not from pain.

From relief.

But the trial was far from over.

The next witness shocked everyone.

Richard Thorne.

Marcus's father.

The courtroom became silent as he walked in.

He took the stand calmly.

Like he had been waiting.

Vincent approached.

"Mr. Thorne, did you know Khloe Bennett investigated your company before marrying your son?"

Richard looked at Khloe.

Then Marcus.

"Yes."

The courtroom reacted.

Marcus felt his jaw tighten.

"Did you believe she married your son for access to the Thorne empire?"

Richard paused.

Then answered:

"Yes."

Khloe lowered her eyes.

But Marcus watched his father carefully.

Because something was wrong.

Richard was lying.

Not completely.

But enough.

The prosecutor stood.

"Mr. Thorne, did you financially support Isabella Rossi?"

Silence.

Richard didn't answer.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Thorne?"

For the first time...

Richard hesitated.

Marcus noticed.

Because his father could lie without blinking.

But now...

he was afraid.

The prosecutor continued.

"Did you authorize payments from Thorne Industries accounts connected to Ms. Rossi?"

Richard remained silent.

And then the courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman walked in.

Older.

Tired.

Carrying a box of documents.

The prosecutor smiled.

"Your Honor, we have a new witness."

Marcus stared.

Because he knew her.

She was the former head accountant of Thorne Industries.

The woman who disappeared ten years earlier.

The woman who supposedly died.

But she was alive.

And she had evidence.

She walked toward the witness stand.

Then looked directly at Marcus.

"I'm sorry it took me this long."

Marcus couldn't speak.

The woman opened the box.

Inside were thousands of documents.

"The truth about Thorne Industries."

A pause.

"And the truth about who tried to destroy Khloe Thorne."

Everyone looked at Richard.

For the first time...

the powerful man who controlled the empire looked uncertain.

Because the courtroom war had changed.

It was no longer about Isabella.

It was no longer about the hospital attack.

It was about the empire itself.

The secrets.

The corruption.

The betrayal.

And now the greatest enemy of the Thorne family...

was not standing outside the courtroom.

May you like

It was sitting among them.
